  1. Program Applied To: MPA Schools Applied To: American University, George Washington University, and University of Maryland Schools Admitted To: AU ($$), GWU($), UMD($$$) Schools Rejected From: None Still Waiting: None Undergraduate institution: Small LAC Undergraduate GPA: 3.5 Last 60 hours of Undergraduate GPA (if applicable): Probably not applicable but upward trend Undergraduate Major: French GRE Quantitative Score: N/A GRE Verbal Score: N/A GRE AW Score: N/A Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 7 Years of Work Experience: 7 Describe Relevant Work Experience: AmeriCorps VISTA and have worked in nonprofits since. Strength of SOP (be honest, describe the process, etc): Pretty strong. I think I described well my desire to go back to school at this juncture in my career, why specifically I am interested in based off my professional experience, and why each school was a fit for me. I began writing in November and was writing/editing/rewriting up until application deadlines. Strength of LOR's (be honest, describe the process, etc): Very strong. I had one professor and two supervisors. I reached out to them immediately after Thanksgiving. Other: Nothing out of the ordinary aside from my two years serving as a VISTA.
  2. Congrats! I am so anxious to hear about my award. ?
  3. I received an email last night from GW to check the portal, and I was admitted with merit funding!! There will be a separate email with detailed funding information coming "shortly". I'm 3 for 3 now at UMD, AU, and GW. Just waiting to hear from AU on funding. I'll post a more detailed response once I have everything in! @succulentdad and @BroadwayBetty, I was at the Top Prospect Day too! In Jennifer's email follow up, it said "late next week", which would have been late last week. We had a weather closure in DC last week, though, so that may have thrown things off.
  4. I applied to Trachtenberg and have yet to hear anything. It's much later than last year's decisions, too. Fingers crossed for something this week!
  5. Thanks! That was my gut feeling, so I entered those dates.
  6. I've entered some deadlines, but most of the schools/programs I applied to had multiple deadlines (priority funding and final deadline, for example). Which would you prefer I list? Or should I list them all with a note saying which deadlines they are? Thanks!
  7. I've seen some comments that results are rolling in, so let's start a 2019 thread! Please use the format below. Links to previous years versions of this thread: 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014. 8. Hello! I'm looking to swap SOPs with a fellow MPA or MPP applicant. It's my first draft, so I am looking for any and all feedback especially around my overall approach. Of course, I would review yours as well! Thanks!
  9. Thanks for getting this started, OP! I'm applying for the first time for my MPA (I have grad work in library science). Background: AmeriCorps VISTA alum, 6 years of work experience in nonprofit/local government, 3.5 UGPA (3.8 for final three semesters [no term GPA for study abroad]). I haven't taken the GRE yet but plan to in January. Program: MPA and MPM Schools: American SPA, Mason Schar, and UMD Best of luck to everyone!
  10. Might I suggest making this a Google Form and then people can only view the spreadsheet? I'd be happy to fill this out (in whatever form it's in) once I'm finished with the application process.
  11. I stumbled across these two programs (New School: Non-Profit Management; GMU: MPA). Does anyone know anything about these programs? I haven't been able to dig up much in a forum search. Thanks! -Alaina
  12. Hello! I am looking into applying to MPA and Community Development programs for Fall 2014. I'm particularly interested in civic engagement, community development, and technology in government (Gov 2.0, open government). I was hoping to get some feedback on my stats, specifically my GRE scores. Thanks! Schools I'm interested in so far: Syracuse Maxwell MPA, UVM MPA, Loyola MS Dual Degree in Community Dev/Social Justice and Social Work, NYU Wagner MPA, CMU Heinz MPA, and Indiana SPEA MPA. Undergraduate institution: Saint Michael's College - small LAC Undergraduate GPA: 3.52. Very good trajectory with 4.0 in final semester. Undergraduate Major: B.A. French Minor in Linguistics GRE Quantitative Score: 148 GRE Verbal Score: 161 GRE AW Score: 4 I'm highly considering retaking as my quant. score is abysmally low. I hadn't taken a math course since high school and did not study enough. I'm happy with my verbal score. I guess I just need a kick in the pants, and someone to say "yes, you definitely should retake". I'm also planning on taking some courses in prob stats and macroeconomics/microeconomics in the spring and summer. Years Out of Undergrad (if applicable): 2 as of August 2014. Graduated in 2012 Years of Work Experience: 2 as of August 2014. I will have served for two years as an AmeriCorps VISTA in city government (community services dept.). My position focused on volunteer management and fundraising (grant writing, donations) and has now shifted to include more civic engagement efforts. I also manage the city's community gardens program. Languages: French Activities: AmeriCorps; board member of a local non-profit. Strength of LOR (be honest, describe the process, etc): I haven't asked yet, but I could easily get recs from the city manager, my supervisor, and a professor. Strength of SOP: TBH, I have yet to start it. I've just begun thinking about this program this summer. I believe I would focus on my AmeriCorps service such as my accomplishments, its affect on me, and how it has shaped what I want to do in the future.
  13. I'm attending UW in the fall for my MS in Library and Information Science. I'm in the online program but am planning to move out to Seattle. I'm in the same situation as most of you; I live in Vermont and apartment/house hunting from this far away is quite difficult! I've been looking at pre-leasing apartments on Craigslist, but they're fairly expensive. When is a good time to start looking? Where I am apartment hunting for the fall starts in like January because of so many college students.
  14. After thinking long and hard over whether I want to do this, I've decided to accept at UW for the fall! I can always rescind my acceptance if I get my financial aid and feel that I can't afford to go, but we shall see! I'm really excited
  15. I just wanted to point out that the Information School is a fee-based program and does not do instate/out-of-state. Or did they offer you instate tuition...?
  16. You are expressing my exact sentiments. I haven't received any merit funding (will probably only get loans and work-study) and didn't get an assistantship on top of the fact that there aren't any instate programs in New Hampshire (I do qualify for instate a discounted rate at URI, but I don't want to go there...). I'm looking at 30K in debt for a degree, and I'm really wondering if I should be going into a Master's program if I can't get any merit aid. I have applied for some outside scholarships, but they're not large scholarships. Does anyone have any advice on this? Should I wait and reapply next year and hope for more aid? I'm not eligible for in-state ANYWHERE unless I move, which is absolutely frustrating.
  17. Sooo, I'm curious. Did anyone on here get interviewed for the Online Learning Assistant position at UW? I think I was supposed to hear back today about who they are hiring, but I haven't heard anything yet.
  18. I'm heavily leaning towards UW. I too was called by someone in the office (I cannot remember her name for the life of me), which was such a nice, personal touch. I also really like the program offerings. I just get so excited thinking about going there (online, but I will move to Seattle).
  19. Does anyone know if it's possible to get in-state tuition at UMD if you're out-of-state?
  20. I just spoke with U of Washington on the phone and I asked about financial aid. The financial aid office doesn't send out information until mid-April and it could come before or after the decision deadline. She said, however, that if you accept and then realize you cannot go because of your financial aid package that you can contact them and rescind your acceptance of admission. Is it kosher in grad school land to accept multiple offers because of the time discrepancy between decision deadlines and financial aid information?
  21. I don't believe we are ineligible for scholarships, but we are ineligible for University Grants because it's a fee-based program (this applies to the whole program not just online). I think we can also get work-study and such too. I wish now that I had marked residential only, but I wanted to give myself the best chance of getting in by marking the "prefer residential, but will take online" option. I'm thinking of asking them if it's possible to transfer to residential after a year. I may still move out there anyway just so I can meet professors, network, join clubs, and take electives on campus. Here is what their website says: http://www.washington.edu/students/osfa/graduate/fee.based.html
  22. UW is my top choice too. I'm thinking of accepting and moving out to Seattle so I can take electives on campus and be able to participate in campus life. Does anyone know when we hear about funding?
  23. Just heard back from UW. I got into the online program not residential unfortunately. I'm kind of bummed, but I'm still happy I got in. I wonder if it's possible to transfer to residential after a year.
  24. I'm constantly checking my email and getting so impatient! Would it be inappropriate to email them the ask when decisions will be sent?
  25. Has anyone heard from UW yet?
