  1. Yeah, wealthy middle-class districts in like CA or NY or something, not in the midwest, that is for sure. Maybe like in Lake Forest, IL or something. I know none of the teachers at my school made that kind of money, or most if not all of the schools in my district when I was in high school.

  2. You know, did you consider that it could be that rare species of zombie, zombus comedium, chronicled in "Shaun of the Dead" or did you overlook that possibility? If that is the case, you might consider inviting them in for tea. I believe zombies from that area of the world like to take their tea in the mid-afternoon around 2-ish.

  3. FWIW, Neil Armstrong was a Boilermaker and an Illini invented the first plasma display among many many many many many other things from many many many many many other schools. :D

  4. Ok, now I want to preface this post with a statement that in no way is this a case of me asking for people to make up my mind for me. You can take your guesses as to which two schools in my sig I am talking about, but I don't plan on saying which is which.

School A: Admitted without guaranteed funding. Visited recently and hit it off pretty well with one of the professors, whose research group is absolutely perfect for me in almost every way as far as my interests go. However, this professor said that he probably wouldn't know if he could offer me funding of any kind for at least 4 or 5 more weeks for one reason or another (not sure if he was waiting on funding or waiting on seeing who else was interested to weigh his own options).

School B: Admitted with full funding guaranteed. Visited recently and made a good connection with 3 or so professors, all with interesting research groups, but, while very interesting, none are quite perfect. They all are places I feel I could find a niche and get some very interesting work done, but none quite as perfect of a fit as the one professor at School A.

My question is, is there any way that I can try to talk to the professor at school A again and see if I can get a more definitive answer on funding? I don't exactly have a lot of spare change, and it would be awfully hard to pass up a fully funded offer for one that is a very slightly better fit but isn't guaranteed that I can even get into that group in the near future.

At the same time, which do you think would be the better choice? School A is a little better regarded, but it is nearly a wash.

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Well no Berkeley for me either... =(

They said that the emails were sent out, but there was some technical problem with their computer system so they didn't actually get sent and they are having their programmer work on it as we speak, so oh well.

  6. *Really* don't think that calling the office has any bearing on whether they accept you or not - they're just looking names up in a database.

Hey, allow me my irrationality please. haha

What number did you guys call to get your status? I think If I don't hear this afternoon I will call.

  7. Shit, I really was about to call, but everyone who calls is rejected. Looks like more waiting for me. Man this is driving me CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!! :o:o:o :x :x :x          :(:(:(

  8. Yeah I am really down to debating whether to call or not, but since everyone who has called has been rejected, I am afraid to do it. I realize that it is not the case, but my irrational subconscious tells me that if I call, I am rejected. haha. And the waiting continues...

  9. This is what Berkeley told me about two weeks ago verbatim:

The admissions review process for the Mechanical Engineering Graduate Program for Fall 2009 is nearly complete. Some areas are still in the process of making their final admissions decisions and all admissions decisions will be completed by March 27, 2009.

Applicants will be notified of their admissions status via email soon after March 27, 2009.

We appreciate your patience in the final stages of the admission process.

I still haven't heard either, so it should be literally any second... :(

  10. There have been entire discussions on this elsewhere.

Thanks for the succinct and unhelpful answer, rising_star. You mind linking me to some of those threads instead of giving these short and condescending answers?

On another note, does anyone know just how nice I should dress up for a campus visit? I have already been admitted and guaranteed funding at one place, and admitted without funding to the other. There was one other thread discussing what women should wear on an interview with a professor, but seeing as how I am not a woman and am going on a visit to schools where I have already been admitted, that my circumstances may be different.

  11. As I understand it, that seems like a pretty good bet. On the other hand, if I get in, I will definitely make a trip out there, and if they say that for people who are M.S. with the intent to pursue a Ph.D. it is fairly easy to get yourself an RA or TA position on your own, then I might be willing to eat a semester of cost just so I can go there. That is all assuming that I get in of course. :)

  12. what do you mean 20/500? what exactly is that number, and where did you get that?

Getting MS alone isn't an option anymore at Cornell, i've heard... It's either Ph.D directly, or M.Eng.

Not true. I applied as an MS/PhD to Cornell. I didn't want to bother with M.Eng. I wanted (A) the lower tuition rate and (B) research.
