Here's the thing, 1. NDSEG sent an email to awardees letting them know they have an extension to Friday to respond 2. NSF and NDSEG share an office (right?), which means they're probably talking to each other. 3. It's hard to imagine NDSEG offering an extension unless either: a. They know that awards will be released no later than Friday (and probably Thursday, if they wanted to give students some time to digest and respond) b. They said to the NSF "either you get your stuff done by Friday or we just move along with our process regardless" Seems to me that b. is pretty unlikely, but you never know.. I'm hoping that they release results tomorrow.

So - I'm an engineering student and I successfully deferred for 1 year after being accepted to my school (heading out there this fall). Every school is different, and mine actually states that their policy is not to permit 1 year deferrals. I guess the moral of the story is (1) check with your department for their policy, (2) have a good reason to defer, (3) make sure you state your case well. I doubt external funding/fellowships has any bearing on the decision.

I thought the GRF was 30k/year, prorated for 9 months if you chose to do something non-academic with your summer.. am I reading this wrong? but then there's this.. Hmm.. I mean, I don't want to do anything that's too far away from what I'm studying, but this does seem limiting. Any current fellows with experience getting summer work exceptions here?

This really is getting ridiculous. I'm trying to wait to reply to another fellowship (not NDSEG) until I hear about this one. Fruustrating.

No way! I get this message: Access to NSF GRFP rating sheets is now closed. We will enable this application when this year's results are available. Thank you!

    Received my rejection... J

Ahahaha.. I got an email this morning entitled "Federal Student Aid"... ...from FAFSA, reminding me to finish my application. Love it.
  10. So this is one thing that I have not addressed at all... I don't have an advisor. I was planning on dealing with that after I get out there.. I'm just going to live in grad housing the first year, and there's really only 1 choice for engineering students, which is the large grad apartment area. So there's not much to decide there either.. Thanks for all the input... I'm guessing I'll just wait it out at this point and see the campus when I get out there in the fall. Boo.
  11. Hi, So here's my situation: -For the 2008-09 academic year, I was accepted to Stanford, Michigan, and Maryland for EE MS/PhD studies. I visited Michigan. Decided based on reputation and the advising of some professors that Stanford was the best bet for me. -I accepted my admission to Stanford and then ended up deferring for a year (to continue working) -I'm now definitely going out there in this Fall to start the program I really want to go visit the campus now just to see it, but it's a fairly large expense (probably ~800 or so for a few days). At the moment I'm thinking it's not worth it. I'm wondering if there's solid justification for a visit.. anyone have any thoughts as to why I ought to visit? Thus far I have: -Meet professors -Meet staff -See housing -Attend a class (I'm really looking for reasons to go check it out... :-) ) Thanks, J
  12. Hi! I'll be attending this fall.. studying towards MS/PhD in EE. Never actually been out there, but I think it'll have to wait until I get there at this point. Does anyone have any tips / thoughts on the graduate housing? It looks like I could live in Escondido or Lyman for engineering, but I guess EV is the bigger of the two... After being out for two years and living in a normal-sized apartment I am not looking forward to dorm-style living again. Jeff
