  1. StrangeLight really does win over and over.

How does one go about asking a POI "sensitive" questions? I know that sounds vague (sorry).

For example, are there topics which one should never, ever broach with a POI?

    *sorry for sounding ignorant.

  2. Hey everyone! I've been super busy and MIA lately, but I've been admitted to Berkeley and Wisconsin in the last two days! I am SUPER excited and absolutely shocked. Congratulations to everyone who has heard good news recently and to everyone else - just hang in there for now and I'm am absolutely confident that all of you will be admitted to fabulous programs!!!!

    Berkeley and UW!? WELL DONE!!

  3. Those of you who earned your MA and studied language at the same time:

Can you please speak to how difficult it was to maintain a full graduate course load AND study a language?

I assume grad school load is tough already, but those of you did this apparently added some stress to your already packed load.

    Thanks!

  4. Congratulatioins to all the Wisconsin admits!

My application still says "pending," which my general viewpoint on everything leads me to believe "rejection."

Could the UW admits please tell me their sub-field?

GOOD LUCK! Please give the keys to someone else tonight!

  5. So is that where you have decided to go? You didn't hear from anywhere else? I still am stinging from my "subtle" rejection...

I have to say my strength as a human being is humility; I take advice from bright people very seriously.

And literally every person I've ever met says "don't say yes to anything until you've heard from everyone." So, that's what I'm going to do. That said, I'd be thrilled to go there!

I also was accepted to Texas A&M, but with no funding and to Florida State, but they have not sent me any news on funding yet (they said mid March or something).

*I'm sorry about your rejection. As everyone keeps saying "the game isn't over yet!" If you look at the stats for some of the rejections on the survey I think you'll see it is very clear that often times politics certainly plays a role in this game. It's amazing how often someone with great stats gets rejected.

  6. Also, there's really nothing wrong with a MA. I really think that the MA gives you a chance prep for the PhD so you are much better prepared academically, emotionally and psychologically. I don't know if I can do well in a PhD program if I didn't go for my MA first, now that I look back.

I really can't express to you how happy I am to see you post this.

I was also accepted to Miami and offered an awesome funding package and I am personally pretty excited about using the next couple of years to improve my writing and languages- not to mention I really admire 2 scholars I will have a chance to take courses with.

  7. I'm also going for Russian this summer.

I've heard nothing but positive things about this program and I can't wait to participate.

Since you asked for "more specific?"

    1) What was your favorite part of the program?

    2) How much did you improve over that period of time?

    3) Did you attend more than one summer?

    Thanks!

  8. How many people on here have attended a Middlebury Summer program?

Those who have- could you please discuss your experiences?

I can't wait to attend this summer.

*sorry if this is not exactly grad school related

  9. Hello fellow Rus/(East)Euro/asian folks. I was going through the results board from the past couple years for the programs to which I've applied (mostly for 1st year Balkan Studies [bosnian/Croatian/Serbian], though my language background is Russian) and I've so far deduced these approximate notification times:

    Michigan & UNC: 1 March

    Indiana: Feb/March

    Ohio State: Feb?

    Kansas: March?

    Columbia: April

I'm just wondering if anyone else has more concrete information. I like to know when to throw my neuroses into overdrive.

Best of luck to you all! Get those FLAS apps in!

I second this post in general.

Based on the "results survey" section of this board we should start receiving Indiana notifications within the next 2 weeks. Which means the next 2 weeks will be really long and painful...

  10. We can say "I think it'll be busy next week" but really, I'm happy with this forum just providing me with a place to vent and express frustrations for the time being. Based on the sites I see I don't think I'll hear anything until mid February.

    Thanks, people!

  11. I don't think that an acceptance without funding is really a rejection since most state schools are experience economic hardships and have had their funding really cut. There are only so many endowments to go around, and they have to honor prior commitments (like those who won multi-year packages in the past years).

Yeh I agree with this, but I hope I don't have to face this reality.

  12. You know, I thought "I'm going to take my lightest loads during my last year as an undergrad so that I can 1) focus on apps in the fall and 2) not have too much to stress about during the spring." Now I regret that decision because it allows me more time to focus on rejections/acceptances.

A Professor recently approached me and asked me to co-write an article with him based on research I had previously conducted; I have enough time that I've literally already completed that process, too.

For better or worse I'm now officially a part of the "what the f!@* I want answers" group with the rest of you.

Loimorpha...: are you attending school in Houston?

Congratulations to whoever received an offer at UCLA.

  13. First of all, congratulations to those who are receiving acceptances/offers. That is great news.

I applied to 9 programs and I've already received 2 acceptances; but those are both from places I chose to be "safeties" (which I have since been told does not really exist). I've heard nothing for a while though.

I guess it's great to know that I at least have somewhere to go if no one else says "yes?"

    Best of luck to everyone!

  14. I hope this question has not already been answered elsewhere, but:

can anyone discuss the odds of receiving a FLAS?

It's not that I think I'm not a very competitive applicant- it's just that I would like to see some statistics (if they exist!).

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

Zahar- thanks a lot. I actually took your advice- let's hope it works!
