  1. I'm looking at master's programs too and what I've noticed is the programs that do offer funding usually only do to a few people. For example, the two programs I'm looking at that offer funding accept 20-30 applicants a year but only fund 2-3 of them. If you're confident that you'll be the top 2-3 of their applicants, then sure.

I just bumped a thread for you.

    Good luck.

  2. What's everyone's status like?

I'm not assuming I'm done with a single thing until my adviser says "you're done." With that in mind, it seem that I'm about 3/4 through with the SOP and about 2/3 through writing the Writing Sample (the research has been completed obviously).

Too busy to be as stressed out as I should probably be...

  3. For the record, in the last week I have contacted two POIs who are currently on leave.

Both suggested that I apply to their respective schools anyway and suggested that, despite their current distance from the school, they would still have some say in who was or was not accepted.

I know that doesn't exactly answer your question, but perhaps it helps someone? Or not? I hope so.

  4. I gotta be honest, it's been interesting to watch this thread. As someone who thinks I know what I'm getting into I think there is an instinct here that's a little OMG to people from outside. It's super aggressive. But it's not to drive people out so much as it is to explain that, for better or worse, this is how this world works. I hope the original poster looks at all this, realizes that this is a fraction of the difficulty he or she will face in the real academic world, and chooses whether or not they're ready for it on that basis. I absolutely cherish it, but that is not how everyone will react...

The advice I've received from this message board has been invaluable.

I don't know what I would have done last year without TMP, StrageLight, Safferz, and others.

I hope in 2 years I'll have something worthwhile to offer newer people.

    Until then...

  5. I have a question to ask:

I've heard a lot of people mention that it's really great to be able to display, on a CV for example, that one has received money from somewhere OTHER THAN a university; does this include Title VIII/FLAS?

I am only curious. I'm really really thrilled to have received one, I just have no idea if these scholarships fall under the aforementioned umbrella (don't flame me if that's a really obvious question/answer please).

  6. I think that depends on the discipline. My graduate courses are worlds different from even my upper-level undergrad courses.

    AGREED.

If I walked into a history graduate class that was taught like an undergraduate history class I'd do my damnedest to get out of there immediately.

  7. I just randomly looked at DePaul's website today and it looks like their history department only offers a MA (I could be wrong, I admit I didn't spend a lot of time on the site). If so, then my guess is they offer something to MA students. Can anyone confirm?

  8. It's possible that your recommending professors weren't "competitive," either within your field or within the discipline as a whole.

is it possible to derail a 100+ page thread? My instinct is "no," but I apologize if I'm doing so anyway.

How important is the "prestige" of the professor writing the letter?
