  1. hi all!, while filling the ds 160 form i came across two sections which i am quite confused- 1. work experience-i passed out of BTech last year and received an offer letter to a company.however, i declined the offer and prepared for MS. hence i currently have zero work experience...i am worried about what to write for the reason for "Unemployed" in the work experience section...should i write "declined offer letter for higher studies"?? would it become a problem for me during the visa interview? or should i write my training experiences acquired during college holidays (1-2months) as work experience? 2.length of stay-the course duration shown in i20 form is 36months while the course website shows that it can be completed within 2 years...what should i write in the "intended length of stay" of the ds 160 form...if i am to write 3 years what explanation should be given during VI for the tution fees coverage for the entire 3yrs?? hope someone can help me through these problems...thank you
  2. thanx everyone for replying...i will inquire about it with the university officials.
  3. hi all! I am a student applying for MS in Computer engineering for fall of 2012. my name given in the passport is: Surname : (Blank) First/given Names: XXX YYY ZZZ However when i got my I20 form the name was shown to be: Surname: XXX YYY ZZZ First Name: FNU (i.e. First Name Unknown) I also got a letter from the university explaining why FNU was added as the first name and my original full name was given as last name. However I am now facing a confusion as to whether I fill the I 901 (SEVIS Fee form) and DS 160 (Visa application form) with either of the following: (i) my original first, middle and last names ,or (ii) first name: (Blank) last name: XXX YYY ZZZ or, (iii)first name:FNU last name:XXX YYY ZZZ I prefer to choose the 2nd option as I hope that it would help in avoiding creating my details with FNU as a part of my name (coz FNU would cause lot of problems later on)...but since its told to write the full name in the SEVIS fee form ( I 901 form) exactly as it is in the I 20, i am worried if there might be any issues later on for the SEVIS fee receipt... Also please do tell me how to fill the name fields in Visa application form too as i would be applying for it soon. Thank you.
  4. oh,k.i thought that we had to chose the specific course field for the MS studies...when i went through the site of university of berkley i saw the MS/PhD degree, which can be 5-7 yrs long.but i am confused about what will happen if i chose that degree and after doing the MS fail to pass the test before joining the PhD.does anyone know how it works?
  5. thanx for clearing my view about the research and proffessional based ms...since i am interested in doing phd sometime later i mite as well do it nw. although i think it mite be more costlier, isnt it? the only doubt left to be cleared is about the different fields in embedded systems...
  6. i would like to go for a research based job after the ms...but i am not planning to do phd immediately (thought of doing it after having some work experience)...so which type of ms should i take?research based or proffessional...moreover, i havent seen ms being classified as research based or proffessional in the universities that i have searched (like the university of berkley).how can i be sure which type of ms i would be joining for in a particular university? Also, can anyone tell me the different fields in embedded systems that are available for ms?...one of my friends, who work in embedded systems field said that there are different fields in embedded systems itself, like complete hardware system design,hardware/software codedesign and embedded software design.but he wasnt able to explain what are the different careers that are open for each of the field,as he himself joined the company one month back and is new to all these....i am interested in creating different electronic systems and enjoy learning different design topics (like microprocessors, digital system design, computer architecture &organization etc.), but dont like topics such as VLSI etc. I would highly appreciate it if someone helped me out of this plight because i am trying to apply for the fall of 2012 and have to start searching the universities as soon as possible.
  7. i tried posting in the EE section...but havent got any reply till now
  8. I am interested in creating robots and other electronic systems.but i wasnt sure about the scope for robotics in india.thats the reason i thought of doing an ms in embedded systems, which provides me with a lot of job opportunities in india, and then do robotics for following my desire to build robots while i am settled securely in india with a good job...but i realized now that there is not much of opportunities for robotics in india and it would be expensive to do two ms in US.so i have decided to learn embedded systems and then try to make robots on my own. also i would like to go for a research based job after the ms...but wasnt planning to do phd immediately...so i think i should take a research based ms right?...but i havent seen ms being classified as research based or proffesional in the universities that i have searched like the university of berkley.how can i be sure that i am selecting a research based ms for a particular university?
  9. i am intending to take ms in embedded as an assurance for a good job and also as a base level to do an ms in robotics.later i am planning to do research in the field of robotics....so i think i should take proffessional ms for embedde systems and later research based ms in robotics, right? can anyone help me by estimating the average total fee required for a non funded ms?if the cost is too much (exceeding 25 lakhs) then i dont think i would be able to take an ms in robotics...in that case what should i do to get a funded ms?
  10. hi everybody...i am new to this forum and hence i would start off with an explanation of my background. i did my B.Tech in Electronics and Communications in NIT (National Institute of Technology) Warangal, India.it is one of the top twenty colleges for btech in India.i recieved a cgpa of 7.64/10 by the end of my btech.I would like to join for MS in Embedded Systems by the fall of 2012...but the sad part is that i havent done any projects or research activities so far....i got placed in a company that is focussed in telecommunication and am supposed to join it on monday (4th of july) ,next week...but one of my friends (who also has applied for ms in a different field) has told me that working in a field that is different to the field i am trying for ms in wont help in improving the chances of my admission to any good universities...i thought of doing a course in embedded systems from some private insitituion, but i am told nw that even that wont help in my ms application as they dont have any renowned people in such institutes. Also,i havent got any Lor's so far and would like to knw if a proffesor workin in a different field such as communication would help me to get an ms in Embedded Systems...frankly, i havent been one of the brightest students in my class but i do have a great interest in learning more about wat i like... i did my gre test and got a score of 790Q and 610V but unfortunately, 3.0 for my AWA test....is the AWA score going to affect my application? can anyone tell me which are the top twenty universities that offer MS in Embedded Systems and if i have any chance of getting into one of them?moreover, i'd like to know if the degree provided by a college, which is not among the top twenty colleges would help me to get a good job in USA or back in India, if i performed well during the ms? i.e. if the degree provided by the top colleges and low ranking universities are same or not?
  11. i havent done my toefl test so far...

  13. hey...i studied electronics and communication.my gre scores are quant=790 and verb= 610...and i got an AWA score of just 3.0 (10% below others)...so does the adcom hesitate coz of this low score in awa?is it similar to saikat89's situation???i havent written toefl yet...and havent done any research on the field in which i am interested in doing ms (i.e. Embedded Systems...my cgpa score is 7.64 / 10 and i got my btech from National Institute of Technology Warangal,India...any idea if i can get within the top twenty good universities??? please help me out here...i am in a very sticky situation.
  14. i am an electronics and communication engineering 2011 pass out from NIT Warangal..i want to join for ms in a good university (and if possible with scholarship) for the "embedded system" course by the fall of 2012 . i have a cgpa of 7.64/10 and secured 1400 in gre with a score of just 3 in analytical writing.i will write the toefl within this month.. 1.can anyone tell me if its possible to get admission into a good university with this analytical score??if so can i get a list of the top best colleges to which i can apply for? 2.i havent done any projects in the field of embedded systems so far.so is it going to be a huge drawback for me? 3.when is the last date usually for application for the fall of 2012?
