  1. Ok guys, I am relieved. Even if it says ''tuition'', they told to me that it has nothing to do with tuition. I called the bursar's office and they told me that it is the payment that i need to do for my apartment governed by the university. Yay! :-)))
  2. I received a rather suprising email that wants payment from me. I have a tuition waiver. I do not want to mislead someone. Tuition waiver waives your tuition. And it was. Now I need to call the bursar's office to day to ask about this: Charge Amt Charge Due Dt Charge Description Reference # $4665.00 08/27/2012 Grad OS Tuition I think my tuition waiver will waive this also but I was amazed to receive this email. What do you think? What is Grad OS Tuition? Lol... I have never paid that much money as an international before. I really wonder what is going on... :-) I can not pay that all of a sudden either... And I never heard about something like this :-) I do not want to mislead prospective applicants. USA is a real good country in academic research, possibilities and assistantships it provide. This is just like some kind of suprise :-)
  3. Dear Karlito, It is very nice that you want to read about postmodernism in summer thinking that you will not confront it in fall. I have to share my experience about how I started to build my knowledge on postmodernism. First read writers who wrote on the founders of postmodern roots. From a sociological point of view, Steven Seidman (the sociologist) writes very nice, and also about postmodernism and social reality. This is going to give you a very good idea about the place of postmodernist thought in social research. You can also read books on Foucault. You can use Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy as well (that is online and free) Jana Sawicki once wrote on Foucault's importance for Feminist Politics. If you check carefully, you can find it in an edited book on feminism. You can read Sawicki as well. She is also very clear. The most important is that you can not learn postmodernist thought simply reading texts. It is being deployed around us, in activism, art circles, behaviours, design, etc. Also read Althusser (ISAs) carefully, it is a root of postmodern disscussions of our times. Best, C.
  4. I am sure no one in this thread applied professor X's past PhD institution, Uni of Strachylde. But he is a publishing scholar and he published very good things.
  5. I absolutely agree. I was out in my statement of purpose and my writing sample. I know my acceptance and rejections were not related with my sexual orientation because the professors whom I wanted to work with were also out.
  6. This week, I guess, will be decisive and I want to get out of the waitlist so much. I hope I am accepted.
  7. Hey, I agree, a Sociology departmen must be a very welcoming environment. But of course, it depends on how you feel! I came out in second term of my MA in Women's Studies. Even in WS, everyone can not understand being gay but it was not a disturbing experience. If you want to, you can come out. If not, it is your decision again, thus we have to respect. Coming out or not is not a matter. You just need to be happy and put your perspective into your works.
  8. Just received an email. Rejected from Indiana Gender. Good luck to all, Congrats to those accepted. Only waitlisted at UConn. Best!
  9. not yet. anyone called indiana about when they are planning to announce the results?..
  10. No it was not me. Wish I hear soon too.
  11. hey, about indiana, i used to think that the deadline was 15th of March, but i was wrong: (according to their website) ''The official deadline is April 15th, yet we will try to contact everyone by late March or early April.'' congrats to everyone for their acceptances to many departments until now :-)
  12. Waitlisted in UConn Sociology ... Since I want to delve into Social Theory etc. I want to go there ... Hope some of the admitted people have/are going to prefer positions somewhere else... Thanks, bye...
  13. Indiana Gender seems to be giving very careful consideration to the admission process this year given that the dates of announcements have been earlier in past years. (can be seen in Results Survey on Grad Cafe)
  14. Congratulations and congratulations to everyone who got accepted to every other department!
  15. I saw one acceptance from Rutgers WGS on results survey. I looked at my own and it says ''No Decision'' same like before.
  16. Has someone heard from Gender @ Indiana.... ? It must be close to announce the results....
  17. Anyone heard something? I am also crazy about Indiana I started to check my emails. Because last year people started to hear at the beginning of February... ))
  18. Hey have you ever heard of a good book to improve Academic Writing in Social Sciences? My specialisation is Gender Studies, Social Studies.... I wish to write easliy and good quality articles... There are many books on AMAZON but I do not know which one is the best...
  19. I decided to check websites until I get one acceptance into my inbox from schools with which I am a good fit. After one acceptance, I will check universities with which I am not a great fit. So I believe research fit is important. I am sorry for results. Did you typed the results to Results Survey of Grad Cafe? The link is at the top of the page. Good luck!
  20. Hello I would like to ask what you know about academic positions Women's/Gender Studies PhDs can have? Since I am not wealthy, I do worry about this even if I like Gender Studies being in this world.
  21. Hi everyone, I applied to Indiana Gender and Rutgers Women's and Gender Studies for Ph.D. as well as other sociology Ph.D.s ... I have strong personal statement, strong writing sample, mediocre GRE, and any other part logically strong except low GPA.
  22. You may ask the department. I asked, and they said that I should click on the box that tells that I am applying for fellowships as well.
  23. I reported my GRE scores today besides my TOEFL scores. Two departments have a deadline for application on December 1. So how many days does it take for my scores to reach to universities I choose? Universities are in USA.
  24. Hello, I have ended my statement of purpose (3rd draft). I am very interested in your comments on its content. At this stage, you can ignore simple grammar mistakes. I am going to re-edit the language after the content is clear. I am looking forward to getting your response on the content to re-work on it. Receiving your comments, I will re-evaluate and write the next draft. Warmly, Caner P.S. Please send me PM or answer to this post to receive my SOP.
