  1. I am also worried about this. My MA program is abroad so working is almost impossible. (The visa restricts work to 20 hours/wk, and the university recommends no more than 8hrs/wk, and jobs are hard to come by) The Grad PLUS Loans state that the amount borrowed cannot exceed the "cost of attendance" at NYU. Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford loans have a combined limit of $20,500. Tuition alone is ~$32,000! (I am still waiting to hear about scholarships, but I think it is better to not get my hopes up). So if I take $32,000 in loans to cover tuition, how am I going to pay my rent while I am abroad?
  2. It is really hard to say what a "good" place to apply to would be without knowing anything about your qualifications or research interests. My advice would be to do a simple gradschools.com search here http://www.gradschools.com/Subject/Span ... s/364.html I do not agree that an MA is just general studies until you complete your PhD. Some people get an MA and end their education at that point and do not go on to PhDs. There are some MA programs (SLU for example) that offer generalist MA Spanish degrees, and others (Rutgers, MIIS) that offer very specific and rigorous degrees in translation. Most offer some sort of concentration option in Literature, Linguistics, Peninsular, or Latin American studies. Hope I helped.
  3. In my acceptance letter it stated that the department is unable to offer me a fellowship or TAship. I was wondering (and this may be a stupid question) should I expect a separate letter for financial aid that may include scholarships, or grants? (or at the very least, PLUS loans, etc). I filled out my FAFSA well before the priority deadline. When I was an undergrad I feel like I received two separate letters a month or so apart, but I was just wondering if that works the same for grad school or if I should be applying for these loans individually??? Thanks.
  4. I am sorry if this is a dumb question... I got an email from the director which was an "informal notification" of my acceptance. In the email he said I should receive an "acceptance package" in the mail in a couple of weeks... Will that likely include a financial aid package? Course offerings for fall? What?
  5. I received an email from a faculty member on February 3rd, which was an unofficial confirmation that my application was complete and currently under review, and that I should hear a decision "in the next few weeks" That was almost 5 weeks ago... I think at 5 it stops being "few" and starts being "several" I keep telling myself to be patient, because the website says that those who applied by January 4th (which I did) should hear a decision "sometime in March" and we are just starting the second week. What are your thoughts? Contact or no??? Who do I contact if there is no admin assistant or Graduate Coordinator listed? There is a standard program@university.edu address listed on the website... or should I email that faculty member that contacted me before?
  6. Still waiting from NYU-Madrid Masters program. I applied on October 8th because I knew this was the program I wanted to go to, but my recs weren't in until January 3rd. I feel like I have been waiting for 6 months, although my application has only been complete for 2. I got an email February 3rd from a faculty member which was an "unofficial notice" that that my application was complete and was currently under review, and that I should receive a decision "in the next few weeks." Is it a good sign that they didn't request an oral interview??? (they say they do this if they have any doubts about your Spanish ability). Every time my phone rings with an unknown number, or I get a new email, my heart skips a beat.
