  1. I went for a run today to clear my head and suddenly came to the realization that Berkeley is the one and only school for me. Wahoo!
  2. If your goal is a career in chemistry, then you should be most concerned with professors and schools that are a good fit for your research interests. For example, UT Austin is hands down a better choice than Princeton, Yale, or Harvard if your interests are in materials chemistry. For analytical, you can't get much better than UNC. An institution's undergraduate reputation or selectivity does not say much about the quality of its chemistry department. I didn't apply to any Ivies, and I don't regret it.
  3. No. Berkeley has historically been pretty sporadic with admissions offers. If you don't hear back by the end of the month, then that's a different story...
  4. Berkeley seems a little slow this year. I hope that more than two of the great applicants on this site get accepted
  5. I would imagine that their stipend is pretty high. Schools are generally pretty good about covering cost-of-living expenses. After all, wouldn't you just apply to medical school if you wanted to incur more debt?! ;-) In other news, I got a call from Caltech today! I was told that official notices would be sent out sometime within the next week or two. I'm so excited! Good luck to all applicants!
  6. The best person to contact at MIT for questions regarding your application is Susan Brighton.
  7. I applied to MIT for biological chemistry with secondary interest in inorganic and heard back on December 28th. I believe that other biological people have heard back too. It's still very early, so I wouldn't be too worried yet if I were you.
  8. Congrats! If this year is anything like the last, we should all be hearing some good news this week . I'm crossing my fingers for Caltech and Berkeley...
  9. Congrats jcknck! Nice stats too.
  10. I don't think that you can search for individual posts within a thread, but maybe I'm wrong? Does anyone else have insight? I'm really interested in metalloenzyme biochemistry. Harvard's program is incredible, but they don't really have people in that area. Besides, if I'm really itching to see Harvard, I can just walk over there from MIT
  11. Who heard from Berkeley today?! http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php
  12. I definitely didn't contact any of the professors before applying. I received the call from Professor Nolan, whose research ties well with my personal statement. It sounds like acceptance notifications have only gone out to a few bio/bio-inorganic people thus far. I'm sure that there'll be a wave of new acceptances in January.
  13. Hi twb, My stats are: GPA 3.99 (4.0 major) GRE 700V/780Q, Chem GRE 850 3 years research experience in same lab 2 poster presentations 1 publication (JACS, 2nd author) TA experience Other chemistry-related extracurriculars What a great way to start the New Year! Good luck to all other applicants!
  14. I just got an acceptance call from MIT (chemical biology)!
  15. Hi guys, Have any of you completed Berkeley's app? If so, what is listed for the status of your research summary when you go to look at the application status? I just have a dashed line. I know that I uploaded my summary and that it was < 10 mb, but this weird dashed line that I'm seeing has me worried. Sorry for being neurotic...
  16. Hi everyone. I know that people have posted about this before, but I was wondering if any of you could give your input about my chances at the schools that I'm applying to. My stats are below: GPA: 3.99, 4.00 major at an R1 school (Minnesota) GRE: 780Q, 700V, 4.5 AW 2 graduate courses 3 years research experience with the department chair (very well established in his field) 2 undergraduate research fellowships 1 conference poster presentation 1 publication (JACS, second author) Letters of rec expected to be very good Schools that I'm applying to (Chem): Caltech, MIT, UChicago, Harvard, Wisconsin, UCLA, Berkeley, Michigan. Thanks for the input everyone.
