what's your view on Mccombs (texas)? especially for energy finance and the recent shale boom I know its not an elite school but I have got generous funding from them so was wondering
-
If you leave aside the socialising part, than SAIS could work well for you as well. Especially if you can add CFA on the side.. I recall that on a SAIS webinar on monday they were mentioning that it is very strong for finance jobs in HK and Shanghai
-
Thanks! Well, I would like to work on risk management issues and analyzing regulatory & political developments to guide global investments. darden was at one point strong with MBB... Lately though I think schools like Duke have upstaged darden ... I am still waiting to hear from some good schools in east cost ..lets see how it goes what are your career goals?
-
Good please post your observations here....Also I got admitted into Darden MBA yesterday but no funding ... I believe Darden does not allow to combine degree with SAIS.... so it would be a tough decision for me
-
Did you get any response from SAIS on detailed split of organisations recruiting there?
-
anybody else received any news on funding?
-
Sorry to hear that..but chin up, you have admits from equally good schools. All the best in whatever you deicide !
-
Exactly ! I am not suggesting by any means that younger grad students are not bright enough or shouldn't bother appling to grad school (in fact I regret not applying earlier myself) all I was saying was that the opportunity cost for a young person is considerably less, whereas if I would have to reorient my career, I need to be completely committed to my decision. At this stage unfortunately, I cannot afford the luxury of just a good education divorced from market realities... .Hence so much of introspection

Wow that a great offer from SIPA ..To get such a generous offer from a supposedly stingy institute speak volumes about your profile .... I have got small funding from GTown (10K $ a year) but in two minds right now . Since I am an international candidate working for US state is not an option for me, therefore I would primarily target pvt or Multilateral sector. Do you think Gtown is strong there? especially with its ICB concentration ?
-
Thanks. So would SAIS be any better for private sector jobs or is it a general limitation for internationals students regardless of programs? Also, since you have worked extensively in DC, how wold you regard MSFS program? Is it in the same league as SAIS, HKS, WWS?
-
Good find.. I think that's how SAIS most notable alumni -Timothy Geithner, may have started his journey towards the upper echelons of finance.
-
I guess you are right. I see you also have got through some other good programs. Have you made up your mind about where you would be heading to?
-
@Revolution one other think which slightly puts me off is that yesterday I spoke to a SAIS grad and he told me that student body seems to get younger every year. This is not a problem per se but it could be an indication of general change in the application pool. I strongly believe in a notion that in a grad school you learn as much from your peers and you do from professors and course material. I don't want to find myself in a situating where I am surrounded by people who are in the process of finding themselves as opposed to people who are really focused and know what they want to achieve in specific terms. I know age and work ex is not a necessity for a mature and focused student body but there is a strong correlation there..
-
I think Cohen Group do recruit some as well. Though they hire MSFS grads in same number .. so not sure how and where SAIS reap benefit of its "rigorous economic curriculum"
-
No I am an international candidate and more interested in political risk consulting. I know SAIS is more in line with my goals but do you think ICB concentration of MSFS is sufficiently geared towards pvt sector. I have seen lot of MSFS grads (through random internet search) working in firms like Eurasia group, Kissinger associates et al
-
@soapwater @riverguide, Thanks guys for that general impression on MSFS and Gtown. My situation is slightly different because I have got no aid from SAIS and some (20k $) from GTown . therefore even though SAIS was my top choice , I need to seriously look at Gtown now..

I hate to have to agree with you but your are right.. Having a background in law myself, I can tell you that one would struggle hard to find more pretentious class of people than lawyers (even including bankers) . This quality is ingrained early on in law school, when they are told that practicing law means engaging in scholarly pursuits on par with Aristotelian way of philosophizing, however in reality your are burned out by drafting commercial agreements and taking care of procedural issues... I know its gross generalization but it really annoys me when people exclusively attack MBA types for being greedy and snobbish and seems to regard law as a noble profession in pursuit of liberty and social justice.
-
@Revolution.. Just curious why don't you like law students? They have type A personality and rather fare well (even compared to MBA's) on your revered dollar yardstick
-
I don't intent to start another 'Vs' thread but would love to know any cultural differences b/w SAIS and MSFS. I am choosing between the two and so would appreciate any beneath the surface info.
-
Don't know but I am slightly concerned with the lack of general discussion/interest regarding MSFS at gradcafe compared to programs like SAIS, HKS, fletcher. I hope it is not indicative of something...
-
Hope your wait is worth a while ! All the best !

Hi All admits, Anyone received financial assistance from GT? I have received some merit award but slightly confused about the terms and nature of the assistance
-
I think one thing you can learn from IR programs is the art of presenting things. All the points you raised do have some merit but the way you raised them induced ad hominem attacks . By saying this I don't intend to shun any of your arguments, In fact I share some of your reservations about IR schools and careerwise in quite a similar position to yours, as I have been working in Pvt sector for last 5 years as a Corporate Lawyer and would only consider going to graduate school if I can satisfy myself that doing so would lead to a better career path in both emotional and monetary terms. . However you must understand that there are a lot of people in this forum who have a very esteemed view of these IR schools and attacking that image (in a brutal manner as you seem to do quite often) would almost be considered blasphemous and invoke such harsh reactions. Anyhow I am also considering MBA programs. I have admits from SAIS and MSFS and patiently waiting to hear from Darden and Cornell (Johnson). Which schools have you shortlisted? All the best in whatever you choose to do next.

Hi kadisha, I received a similar e-mail asking me to submitting my official transcripts et al. before Aug 1, whereas I have already submitted everything. I wont read too much into it ...i think there is some disconnect b/w GU and SFS . Perhaps that only can explain why i received my welcoming e-mail from MSFS before I got the email from gtown regarding the availability of my decision
-
Yes.. go at the bottom. under the decision status it would say - Your application decision is now available online If it is not there then don't panic as all decisions are not out yet
