  1. Thank, but I intended my question to be - is it feasible to walk around in the freezing cold ?
  2. Hi everyone, i come from a place where it nevers snow. I was wondering - even in towns where there's really good public transportation, how normal is it to use it on Dec-Mar when it's freezing outside ? Wouldn't a car be a good idea in these places? Thanks, shai
  3. what's the difference between a small town and college town. (this from someone who's not an american...) I know this is more for the "city guide" part of these forums, but what would you consider the following places : Chicago (obviously a city, but how threatening is it ?) Boulder, Colorado Ithaca, NY Boston (same question as Chicago) Pittsburgh, PA San Diego Vancouver, British Columbia Urbana Champaign, IL Northwestern, IL Thank you everyone !
  4. Thanks for your point-of-view. However, I do believe that taking in consideration the location when choosing a program is not only important - it is necessary. I've moved a lot in my life, and when deciding on what i'll do in the next 5 years or so an important aspect of it is where i want to do it. I really don't get all the people in this forum saying that grads don't have lives. Lives are what you make of them. I know this is a cliche, but take it from some one who spent 3 years in the navy and knows what it means to have NO time for yourself.
  5. Can anyone clarify the difference between the two degrees ? Would the DBA be considered "less academic" once on the job hunt as a professor or research position ? Why do some programs give a PhD and some a DBA ? Thanks ! Shai
  6. So my girlfriend and I have an enduring debate and I would like to know what other people think about it. When choosing where to apply to, I'm leaning toward a small university town and she's leaning toward a big city (NYC being her perferd spot). While I keep claiming that meeting new people in a big city can be difficult (from my experience, the bigger the city the less prone you are to start chatting with a random stranger), she claims that in a small town you get bored easily from the people ther and you don't have much options after you get to know everyone. Anyone else have the same debates ?
  7. Hi, I'm no expert but I do know that most universities require a minimum of 100-104 in the TOEFL. So maybe your gre isn't the thing you want to dedicate yourself to.
  8. I would appreciate an answer here too. Would the DBA be considered "less academic" once on the job hunt as a professor or research position ? Why do some programs give a PhD and some a DBA ? Thanks ! Shai
  9. Is it legit ? Is it a smart idea ? Any intake ?
  10. Thanks for the intake. But don't you think that being in a business school automatically focuses you on the aspect of business ? Can a business professor really speak against certain business "axioms" (capitalism, money etc.) ? Is there a place for social mindness in a business school ? As for the proffessors - I know there are many prof. in business schools who earned PhDs in Social Psych. However, once I get my PhD in marketing, I'll be a 100% business professor. Am i correct here ? Do you know of any business professors working in Psych. departments ?
  11. I was wondering if anyone here might have the same moral dillema I do. I want to research decision-making. Most research is done either in Social psychology programs or Marketing programs (within business schools). I feel that if i apply to business schools i'm sort of "selling my soul to the devil" - conducting research so that the big companies gain even more money. has anyone had the same thoughts ? Shai
  12. Hey unlikelygrad ! Where can i find the carnegie ranking you stated ? ? Thanks, Shai
  13. I studied one word list a day (about 75 words daily). However - here is my advice to you. ready ? RELAX ! It doesn't help knowing all the words and being hyped about reading comprehension and whatever if you arrive stressed out to the test and mess it up. relaxtation helps concentration. that in turn helps grades. but that's my take on it.
  14. Thanks. That thread was about McGill and a lot of views concerning it in specific. Anyone knows of some specifics concerning UBC ?
  15. Does anyone know how the Social Psychology PhD program in UBC (Vancouver) is ? I don't know anything about Canadian schools. Are they regarded with the same prestige as the US top 20 ? Do graduates go on to teach in the US ?
  16. I know that no one can give me really good statistics and that things depend on how well we do - but here's a dilemma : My girlfriend is applying for an MFA in Creatve writing and I will be applying for a PhD in Social Psychology / Marketing. What are the chances hat we will both be accepted into the same school ? Any tips on how to push those chances upward ? Thanks, Shai

    GPA Conversion

Thanks for all the details. But something doesn't sit right for me - in the end, international students are regarded on a scale (whether it is known to students or not) that position them as well as american students. that's why i fell it important to know what the conversion is like. what would be the minimum US grade (4.0 scale) for a student to be considered "excellent" or "honor" or whatever word each uni chooses ? where i go, an outstanding student would have a >94 grade. cheers, shai

    GPA Conversion

All here have regarded A-F to 0-4.0 conversion. How about 0-100 to 0-4.0 I onlt want to know where i stand
  19. Does anyone know of a website (ithout charge) that one can see real candidates past SoP ? Maybe people here can start posting the SoP that got them into their prefered schools ?
  20. Does anyone know of a reliable way to convert grades from 0-100 scale to the 0-4.0 GPA scale ? I'm an international student and have no idea what grades you guys consider as good.
  21. Thanks for the rpelies everybody. But do you really think it's appropriate to contact past grad students asking them - "hey, was this prof nice to you or what ? " ?
  22. Hey, Here's a question that I can't find the answer to neither in this forum or the schools' websites. A lot of people tell me that getting into a PhD program depends on whether the professor you want as a mentor is accepting students. Is there any place to find out if there are (and how many) openening to a certain professor ? A few state on their personal websites, but most don't mention it. Also - is there any website with "testimonials" of present&past grad students of their work with their guides ? I've heard some horror stories of certain professors being unavailabe to their docotoral students, and might consider not-applying to their programs. I'm looking into Social Psychology / Marketing programs, if that's a factor in the answers. Thanks, Shai
  23. Hey Dr Psych ! Still one thing not clear to me. everybody seems to be telling me that undergrad/grad students are different from business undergrads / mba students. yet i don't what accounts to that difference. i'm guessing it's an american thing - but maybe you could enlighten me on that ? thx, -shai
  24. Cool ! hre's another question (if you don't mind) : is it legit to apply in the same school for both a psych program and a marketing one ? because they're not run through the same school i would imagine there is a differentation there....
  25. Hi cogneuroforfun Thanks for the advice ! as for the difference between social psych and cognitive psych - i majored in cognitive science and kind of decided that i'm not interested in the EEG/fMRI/reaction time studies. How can i know if the program i'm applying to conducts studies of that sort or not ? -shai
