    Predictions

I'm not predicting here for myself, bu tI like to toy around with numbers. Applied to 10 programs. Average acceptance rate - 5% Average rejection rate - 95% chances that I will be rejected at all places = (95/100)^10 = 0.598 Chances I won't get rejected from all places => 1-0.598 = 0.402 That means 40.2% of getting in. Not something I would bet on if I was in Vegas, but still a little hope.
  2. while working on my statement of purpose - Alex Murdoch, Elliot Smith while frustrating - mostly grunge music
  3. Does anyone have any bad experience about tattoos in grad school ? I have two tattoo on my legs, which are seldom seen by anyone but me. However I'm thinking of getting a tattoo in a more visible part of my body. What do you think ?
  4. One thing - I think that you would want to state your skills, not just say you posses them.
  5. Is it really essential ? If i was in an admission comittee I would want to see the exact opposite - an applicant who is so sure of his/her goals that they would pursue them no matter what school they are admitted to
  6. A program I'm applying to in Uni of Oregon in Eugene specifcally state that alle materials should arrive at their department on deadlin (dec 1st) and not just postmarked. This makes me anxious, since I had everything sent yesterday (!). And this is my safety school - the one I HAVE to get into ! How long does the GRE / TOEFL take to arrive in the schools ?
  7. Hi everyone, I sent my GRE, TOEFL and transcripts already to the different schools and am stressed whether they were received or not. Anyone attending to the following schools - how did YOU find out your scores were received by the ad comm ? cornell UC at boulder Harvard Yale Uni. of Chicago Duke Uni Michigan, ann arbor UVa thank you
  8. I actually had one question to fill in. I don't know if it was experimental or not, bein that they didn't say anything in particular there.
  9. Real, adult job. too real, too adult.
  10. You can send it to me and I'll go over it when I have the time. I'm not sure i'll edit it, but i can give my unprofessional feedback.
  11. How about ending it with : That's all, folks ! or (forest gump style) ; and that's al I have to say about that.
  12. sent it over, i'll have a look
  13. No one applying here ? ? ? That's great news for me !
  14. I'm on the same boat... Applying to Social Psych. in : Cornell Harvard Yale Duke Princeton Uni of Chicago WUSTL Carnegie Mellon University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Uni of Virginia They're pretty tough ones, but I couldn't find a "security" school i want to be in.
  15. I meant that you post your SOP AFTER getting in, so no one can steal it from you. I won't mind doing so if I get in.
  16. Hi, Is anyone applying to UC at Boulder psychology ? How did you deal with the prompt for two different essays ? I can't rseally tell the two apart.... Would appreciate any advice / help/ feedback shai
  17. I've ordered the additional GRE score report. How can I know that it has arrived at the school and that they know it is mine ? Is ther a way in the application online form to see the status on that ?
  18. This is for the people who applied and are already in Grad school : How about posting your succesful SOPs (ofcourse, with deleting all personal info / school name or wahtever). This could be of help to the many of us about to join you in school next year Thanks in advance for thos who do !
  19. I've contacted all the school I'm applying to and never got a straight answer about guidlines for the statment of purpose. My essays are currently circa 1000 words. Is that too long ? How are you people handing in your essays in regards to these criteria ? - Font & font size - Margins - Spacing (single, double, whatever)
  20. This isn't LOR inflation, but a pretty logical thing : a. the more zealous / enthusiastic / smart students ask for LORs b. only profs that think the students are worth their time agree to write LORs c. LORs are written for better students by profs who believe them to be worth it there for, "inflation" think about it - if profs were made to write LORs to everybody they teach they would inflate everyone
  21. Hey, How about taking this and turning it into a goodthing ? maybe look at things that you can clear from your SOP because they were already stated by someone else... you can also try and see if there are things you would like to explain in your SOP that your recommenders stated. I wish i could read mine...
  22. I don't know. I'm basing my advice on scientific publications i've read. they all start with a funny/interesting 1st paragraph. If you consider humor to be a big part of your personality, use it. If you shut this part down and try to be what you think they want you to be - you are either bound to be called on your fakeness or (worst) et accpeted and bound to live up to your fake standards. It's not just in applications. the job market works the same way. if you're a person who likes to throw a good joke in but you act all serious in your job interview, once you start working and do put in the daily joke people will feel they have been cheated into hiring you.
  23. You can send it to me. Although i'm no expert, the more advice the better, right ?
  24. I would find a clever way to insert it. something like "Ever since I've been a young child I found myself following the old Spiderman cliche that with great power comes great responsibility. Although I have since grown tired of cliches, that essence remains intact. " What do you think?
