  1. I wouldn't be discouraged just yet. I felt the exact same way about Wisconsin, as a ton of people posted acceptances all throughout the day. But I ended up hearing from them the following day. Timing may have something to do with lots of emails flying around all at once. I will cross my fingers for everyone (might as well do something useful!).
  2. I posted one of the acceptances. Yikes! I'm in shock. Good luck to all!. Letter was via email so I'm sure many more will come in throughout the day.
  3. Yay! Jacib, I think I remember you saying that was one of your top choices!! And congrats to all who are in demand this weekend -- they must really like you guys!
  4. I have a feeling they've already started interviews. It looks like last year they contacted people in late january. I'm not optimistic at this point.
  5. Yes, I wouldn't worry too much right now. I got the call but not an email, for example, so having not heard back at this time may not be an indicator one way or another (especially if you're abroad).
  6. Yes, wow, congratulations to all! I also heard from Stanford and was accepted!! So overwhelming!
  7. I just realized that, in theory, Stanford applicants should hear back today or tomorrow(the department said first week of feb, and that's consistent with the results page last year). But who knows, really...
  8. Eeek. That's good to know, though not comforting!. I noticed quite few on these boards are applying to Princeton and Harvard Sociology. Have others received correspondence from the Soc dppt directly with regards to application status?
  9. I have a question for people: Beyond general grad school web application status, have others received notification from the departments themselves that your applications are complete?. I have only received this from one school. Otherwise, nothing! Should I be concerned and take action, or do I just need to sit tight? Thanks for any input!
  10. All these comments are so helpful. It's a good suggestion to try to hold onto my dying computer for a few more months, in case there are program specific factors to consider. Also, if I'm rejected everywhere, perhaps I wont need a computer at all!! (looking on the bright side) I forgot about the fact that this post might induce a Mac vs. PC debate. Some interesting points made on both sides of the aisle! Thanks everyone!
  11. My computer from undergrad is getting very...old. My question is, what is a good computer for social science grad school? Something reliable, fairly portable, good screen, etc. I'm kind of lost as to what are the 'good computers' these days. I know it's a subjective question, but any suggestions?
  12. I thought someone may have asked this in the past but wasn't able to find it. Many of the schools to which I'm applying give 2 pgs single spaced as the limit, but they don't give a word count. Should I assume that they want 12 pt font (times new roman)? I'm used to using font size 11 for papers and things, so 12 seems so big, but is that standard/the safest way to go? Thanks for any responses!
  13. Eeek, I wasn't going to do anything close to proposing my dissertation in my SOP. Because it seems like it's going to depend so strongly on the particular research projects on which/research center within which you might work or get funded, on the professors who might want to work with you, etc. Since you can't know that as an applicant, proposing a project seems tough territory. But easily I could be totally off... Is an SOP supposed to be a research proposal?
  14. Hello, I am wondering if anyone has insight on submitting in advance of deadlines (say 1-2 wks early) vs. submitting just few days before... Does it have no significance whatsoever, such that if the extra time will be useful, one should take it? Or would it be advisable to submit earlier -- is there a 'last minute' stigma or potential for other problems in submitting very close to a deadline.. Thanks!
