  1. Hi there! East Asian Studies MA here, and I know next to nothing about housing :/
  2. The notifications weren't official, we were told to expect an official one sometime next week. Anyway, just heard from Yale. Rejected, but at least the waiting is finally over! Congrats to everyone who got accepted and good luck to those will waiting!
  3. Good luck with Harvard! After Japan, I feel like I need some nice weather lol.
  4. Thanks! Well actually I'll probably be going to Stanford though, for a better faculty fit and of course the weather
  5. Nope it was from the department. I didn't contact any POIs at Harvard.
  6. Thanks! According to the email an official letter of acceptance and information about financial aid should arrive next week.
  7. Just got accepted to Harvard. This is really random and early.
  8. Mine hasn't changed either Is there anyone else considering going to Stanford who is Japan focus?
  9. Aren't there TAships and other things like that? The email mentioned that no funding was available but it appears that in the past people have received full tuition scholarships..
  10. It's doubly worrying for me since I'm moving back to my home country just around the time any mail sent on the 15th March would have arrived. Ah well what will be, will be
  11. Nope haven't heard from Harvard yet. They seem to notify applicants only by postal service it seems.
  12. Congrats Nong! Best wishes to everyone else! Still waiting to hear from Yale/Stanford/Harvard...
  13. Hige, one of those acceptances is me (JSIS Japanese Studies). Congratulations to whoever else got admitted too!
  14. Hey! Was wondering if any MA applicants have heard from their schools yet. I got rejected by Berkeley today D:
  15. Erm what I meant in the previous post was, does anyone know if EAS programs have a quota (formal or informal) for applicants according to area of specialty?
  16. Spottedzebra, that's really cool! Friends already in EAS MA programs tell me that a significant proportion of their class comprises people who are attached to the foreign ministries of their respective countries, so I guess not everyone goes into academia. You might be able to find out more if you look into the profiles of current/past MA students of each program. Most schools do highlight that they're aiming for a diverse intake though, as Spottedzebra mentioned. I'm curious about the LOR thing too. While I can see how they may be important (theoretically), I do wonder how much weight is given to the LORs of foreign applicants whose recommenders may not be that proficient in English. Does anyone know if programs review students according to area of specialty, or as just as EAS applicants in general?
  17. Wow cool it seems that quite a few of us have some proficiency in French! One thing I'm curious about though - Mastershoping and Spottedzebra, what turned you guys onto East Asia then? For me Japanese is my 3rd language, and I only started learning French in my first year of college, so this means that I learnt all my French in Japanese. I'm able to understand 80% of most print material I encounter but my listening/speaking/writing skills are still quite horrible. Mastershoping: Good luck to you! I believe (or rather want to believe) that applications will be considered as a whole package, so a poor score here and there shouldn't hurt too much if the rest of the application is strong enough. I noticed that your applicant profile seems like the polar opposite of mine. I guess my GPA and GRE scores are decent, but I hail from a school that probably isn't very well-known outside of Japan. I'm not very confident about my personal statement and writing sample, but I tried my best as far as I could while working on my thesis in Japanese concurrently. And yes I'm applying straight from undergrad too. There's no way I would be able to coordinate sending LORs and official transcripts after leaving Japan. Makingmoves: Trawling Chinese forums turns up many cases of people who got accepted by various programs in spite of low GRE scores.
  18. Not too sure about this, but I think a few years back on some forum I read that Yale had about 60 applicants, of which 15 or so were accepted and 7 or 8 matriculated.
  19. Oh great, they got back to me. Apparently I -do- need to send my transcripts over, because my BA will be from a Japanese university. Phew.
  20. Any international students who applied to Berkeley? I was just checking their website again the other day to make sure that I had fulfilled all the application requirements......and the page states that official transcripts are required (which I didn't send because the gradadmissions page stated that they were only required -if admitted-) It's at least a week past the deadline and the dept seems to be on winter break I just sent my transcripts over today, hope it's not too late..
  21. Saltome, I totally know how you feel Today my last recommender just contacted me to tell me that he's submitted all my LORs, so this means that I'm officially done with grad school apps, though there's a couple more days to my thesis deadline. That's a different kettle of fish altogether. Aside from Berkeley, which reflected my GRE and TOEFL scores immediately after submission, all other schools list my application as incomplete as of yet, if this makes you feel any better It also seems that they haven't received my hardcopy transcripts either. Also, I only contacted 2 professors out of 5, because I felt these professors were a good fit/I wanted to find out more about their work. I hear that for MA applications it shouldn't matter too much though. Anyone else specializing in Japan?
  22. Congrats Authorization! Thanks Hige Well I don't really want to spell it outright.....but I'm in a private uni in the Kansai region that's known for having many international students, so you should be able to guess.. Anyway has anyone submitted their applications for Berkeley/Stanford? Just submitted all my applications today and am feeling really nervous. Either way, good luck everyone!
