  1. I've had some friends live in Northern Liberties and it has definitely boomed a lot in the past few years. It's pretty trendy with a lot of restaurants, bars, newer development and you can walk to old city from there or hop on the subway easily. Center City is great and I've never had a problem since I've lived here. As long as you don't look for trouble or go out by yourself at 2AM you should be fine :) There's affordable housing in really all of the neighborhoods if you surf Craigslist religiously like I do! If you are looking for night life, I recommend Old City, Northern Liberties, "Midtown Village" or Rittenhouse. For quieter living, Society Hill, Queen's Village, Washington Square or Fitler Square. I've never lived in the Fairmount area but I've heard good things. I also have some friends that live in south philly/graduate hospital area and love it there. Usually a bit cheaper housing but they do bike almost everywhere and don't rely on public transportation or walking.

    thanks greeneggsntofu!

Thanks for the info greeneggsntofu. I agree Kazoo, we should organize a meet up in September. Someone should collect the emails of those who are going to Philly, because by September no one will be checking this site anymore. I would be happy to do it if no one else does.

that would be great. we should all just send you our emails by message (or alternatively, use facebook)

  2. What did you think of your visit? I was not able to go.

I loved the new building. The studios were either private or semi private and spacious (by city standard). The grads I talked to were really friendly and creating interesting work. They seemed to like living in philly and taking part of the opportunities that are present there. All in all, I loved my visit, there seemed to be a good sense of community. I talked to one of the theory professors and it was my impression that the faculty takes care of their grads and are super available. You can easily take classes in other disciplines at Temple if you wish. They take weekly trips to new york in one of the theory classes.

  3. Hey! Just heard I was accepted too. Not sure if I am going yet or not..

Trying to decide between Tyler and Davis and USF. Doesn't sound like I would get much funding from tyler, hard to say if it would be enough of a benefit to outweigh the cost over the other programs?

Congrats on being accepted caus! did you get to visit the school so far? In my case, talking to current grads and professors was really great.

I just got a job teaching woodworking, sculpture, and photo in a high school in the Philly suburbs. I would be nice to meet up with some of you as well since I will probably be missing the studio atmosphere.

Glad to hear you found a job post graduation! We should totally organize a gradcafe philly night out in september.

I'm not going to Grad school in Philadelphia but I have lived here for the past 7 years and went to Drexel for my undergrad if anyone has questions about the city at all =)

where do you recommend as affordable but nice/fun/young/relatively safe living? northern liberties? center city?

  4. Hi future students of Tyler, Penn and PAFA!

It would be great to connect with some of you as we prepare to take over philly!

What neighborhood is everyone thinking of living in? Are you guys bringing your car? When are you planning to move?

    any tips/thoughts/excitement/anxiety about the city?

    happy tuesday!

  5. just got an email from usc

lol does this mean they are at least interested? -

Greetings from the University of Southern California. We have reviewed your application for admission to graduate study, and are unable to proceed because of important items missing from your application file. These items are listed below:

    • academic transcripts, including coursework from the most recent semester as indicated below.

I got the same email! Silly to get this at this point, especially since in my case transcript they are missing doesnt exist. Do they need these things to reject us?

  6. happy monday everyone,

this waiting game is driving me crazy... i'm about ready to attack the postman when he comes. its the 26th of march and i'm still waiting for 6 answers?!

USC, SAIC, MICA should all be by mail, and Tyler by email.

It seems that RISD hasn't officially rejected candidates?

Also, anyone else still waiting on UCSD?

Thanks kazoo, you're a sweetheart as always :) And, I am jealous of your Alps skiing experience...I am a hard core snowboarder and one of my dreams is to ride Saas-Fee for, oh, a month straight :)

Of course Outwest! I think your work is so interesting and am happy for you! I've never been to Saas-Fee but that would be awesome. I've mainly stayed france-side, in Meribel this time, and would definitely recommend it.

  7. Congratulations to everyone getting amazing acceptances at this point!! I'm so happy for all you guys! and it gives me hope that things aren't over yet.

And I also wanna add I'm soooo grateful for these forums and for all all of you on here. I would be in a fetal position crying if i hadn't discovered this. I've already started making plans for next year and ways to improve my portfolio.

does anyone know if I can contact the schools and ask them to keep my letters of recommendation in my file? cuz I got super awesome ones and I don't wanna lose them for when I apply again next year.

I agree, so grateful for this forum.

And yes! If you are reapplying to the same schools, send admissions an email, many will keep recommendation (and transcripts) from one year to the next if you ask them to.

You will probably have to send them a reminder when they are putting your app together.

  8. Congrats on having made your decision Outwest!!! and good luck to those who have yale interviews coming up. Also sympatico, i had a great postbac experience, as did most everyone with me, so i'm glad you are considering it and i hope it works out!

Nothing new on my front, but i'm in the alps, skiing for a few days, so no one should feel sorry for me :)

Keep up the good spirit everyone!

  9. yea I agree, but I must admit I'm also jealous of people's acceptances, especially the ones with many acceptances and they actually get to make the choice of where they wanna go. it's kinda like in The Voice when you hope with you all your life that someone turns their chair for you, and then you get all of them to turn and it's your turn to make the choice. That's gotta be the coolest decision you can make.

!!! I made that exact same comparison a few days ago to someone!!! Haha I only just started watching the voice, and ive been seeing so many parallels to graduate school. (edit: but im so obsessed, i see this process everywhere)

Just remember, that all we need in the end to move on to the "next round" is one school to "turn their chair" for us! Good luck nfrog

  10. I just joined finally after utilizing this forum for some time. This has been my third time applying to grad schools (I graduated with my BFA in 2002), and I know how exhausting this has been on everyone. It doesn't matter if it is your 1st time or 10th time! I just wanted to chime in and add my own two cents to this board and say that everyone on here is completely different and unique. Through the work that those have decided to share with us, the work experiences, the past education, the vulnerabilities, and the perseverance, I must say that we are all in really good company on here. Nobody should be discouraged, because from an artistic standpoint we are doing what we love and everyone has a different approach to it. There is definitely individual tastes and preferences in art, but it is important to remember that their are no "wins or loses" for us in this world... just opportunities to learn and grow.

    Thanks for your perspective!

I agree. Personally I don't feel discouraged, more just like i'm in this weird limbo where I don't know whether to move on to the next battle, or hold out hope for this round. The silence is deafening, and without wanting to, I put a huge part of my energy into waiting, which is taking away from my time painting, creating etc. Any one else feel this way? I've been on the edge of my seat for over a month and a half, every day hoping for good news.
