Our contact person told me that Berkeley only got 4 this year, compared with 18 in 2006

Technical question about dissertation research fellowships: if you accept a fellowship to fund a year of research, and then are offered a more prestigious fellowship part-way through your original fellowship period, is it possible to cut the original fellowship period short in order to accept the more prestigious one? The timing on all of these big fellowships is staggered and not ideal since I want to get into the field ASAP, but I do want to have something fancy to put on my CV.

Are there any Berkeley grads out there that can offer some guidance regarding first year coursework? Any classes that you would recommend? Perhaps classes that you would suggest avoiding? Any wisdom is appreciated!

What Rankings are Available for Socio-Cultural-Anthro?

Try http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/anthropology or chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124703/ -
I'm only moving from SF to Berkeley, but I had to put my stuff in storage for 2.5 months in the interim. I found a local company called ZipCubes, that's the same idea as PODS but a lot cheaper, safer (rather than leaving your cube on the street overnight, the driver just waits for 2 hours while you load it up) and run by awesome, local people. I managed to fit the full contents of a large bedroom, plus lots of boxes of additional housewares (though no couches) into one cube. I understand they can also contract with trucking companies to do farther moves. Great company if you're in the Bay Area, otherwise it's worth it to search for local PODS-modeled alternatives.

MapLiv is also a decent Padmapper alternative. Locafree aggregates all the Craigslist free stuff on a map in the same way as Padmapper, may come in handy if you're scouring for free furniture within your immediate vicinity.

I use SugarSync and just use the Magic Briefcase as my hard drive and save everything to it. It works well for my purposes.

UC Berkeley vs Duke? (PhD in Anthropology)
wheninhell replied to reporterinvietnam's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Reiterating what you've already heard, by most accounts it seems like teaching experience is really important if you're looking to eventually get hired in academia. Also, most of the Cal students that I spoke with said they actually really enjoyed teaching. -
Does anyone know if the https://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu/ website is worth the money, or is it just as well to scour Craigslist?

Has anyone else found that their EFC seems ludicrously high? Mine was more than 30% of my post-tax income for this past year, of which I will only receive a fraction once I quit my job and start grad school. What's up with that?

I assume it's because they're bumping people over for terminal MA consideration. But I want to accept this g-darned other offer I've got in front of me, but couldn't in good conscience without something to show for that $100 application fee!

Does anyone know who at Stanford I should try and e-mail to inquire about app status? I've tried calling a few times, with no response.

A long, rambling way of asking, "Is it safe to e-mail them?"
wheninhell replied to amywhoisawesome's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm waiting on an FLAS at Berkeley. I've already been admitted, and the department "nominated" me, but I'm freaking out a little because a good portion of my funding seems contingent on my winning the darned thing. Re inquiring with the program about your app status, I think that is totally legitimate. Loads of people do it, and I've never heard of a department being off-put by such an inquiry. -
Has anyone received anything official from Davis or gotten a firm offer on funding? I got an e-mail a month ago saying they needed official transcripts...haven't heard anything since.

I know a few people doing various graduate degrees at Berkeley and living in SF (the Mission, specifically.) Anywhere near a BART station is feasible, as it's only about a 15-20 minute ride to Berkeley. The Mission is probably your best bet, as it's the most livable area in reasonable proximity to a BART station. I currently live there, and have an awesome place right by Dolores Park that I share with 2 other people for $850 each. This is extremely low for the area, and we were lucky as hell to find it, but it exists.

They notified me in an e-mail from the GSA of my department, which included details about my funding offer. I'd be studying Mandarin Chinese. I didn't fill out an application with my general admissions application, but was contacted by my POI shortly afterwards and asked to submit a short essay for FLAS. Best of luck to you as well!

Thanks for your recommendations, everyone! latamedant, I'm planning on focusing on legal anthropology (specifically, comparative notions of justice in China and the US). I have the Blackwell Legal Anthropology reader, which I've been paging my way through. But I have a whole summers-worth of unemployment to look forward to (FREEEEEEEEEDOOOOOOOOOOM!!!), and need to get my head back in the academic game.

Greetings friends, I'm planning on starting a PhD this upcoming fall and was putting together a reading list, and thought I'd solicit some recommendations. My background isn't actually in anthropology (did my undergrad in political science), though I did a fair amount of coursework in anthro and used a lot in my honors thesis. However, I never underwent the "Anthro101" or equivalent experience, and it's been almost four years since I've done anything remotely academic. I get the sense I'm missing out on a good portion of "The Canon." So what do you guys recommend I bone up on before potentially embarrassing myself in front of my cohort?
