  1. Hey when I first came to college, I wanted to graduate in 3 years and then go to grad school afterwards. My profs all rejected the ideas, and my advisor simply told me that if I do it in 3 years, I would not be able to get into grad school for sure because I wouldnt have enough research experience. So I guess it depends on how much research experience you actually have... (for me, I got ALOT more experience and better LOR in 4 years than trying to graduate in 3).

  2. For those who are applying to phd social psych in Ivy League schools (e.g., Harvard, Columbia) , do you mind sharing your gpa, gre, and a very brief CV (publication, research experience, etc)? Also, what are your backup schools??

    Thanks!

The only Ivy i am applying to is Harvard Business joint program in Organization Behavior and Psychology (most likely will not get in). Back ups are Northeastern, Boston College, and UC San Diego.

  3. If I got in at Hass I would like to work with Barry Staw, Jennifer Chatman, and Charlan Nemeth (Psych) - Char replied back to me saying that I did a great job of selecting them to further my research agenda - and advised me to apply to Haas. But we'll see...

Nice, I'm planning to work with Dana Carney and Laura Kray at Haas. Dana just transferred from Columbia to Berkeley so she wasn't sure whether she'll be allowed to take students or not, but whatever... she is actually a good friend of my advisor, and I really hope that will improve my chances a little

  4. This. The "you may use a separate sheet" is a trick; they only provide a few lines so you should definitely use a separate sheet.

Hi, I'm sorry for all these questions, but when they said a separate sheet, it is only 1 page right?? I guess I'm just a little paranoid about U of T. I really like the researchers there but the whole application process seems very different from those in US.

  5. You're in luck, apparently I saved the form from when I applied a few years ago. It asked:

    1. Select a major and minor research area (e.g., social, cognitive)

    2. Briefly describe your research interests more specifically. (If space is inadequate, you may use a separate sheet.)

    3. If you have any teaching or research experience that you consider relevant, please provide details. (If space is inadequate, you may use a separate sheet.)

    4. GRE scores (verbal, quantitative, analytical; psychology optional)

    5. Which scholarships you applied for (e.g., OGS, SSHRC)

SO they are not looking for an essay?? I was kinda counting on the essay part to make my application stronger hahaha (my GRE scores are not that strong)...

  6. Haha I would love to apply to Kellogg. Galinsky is so awesome and I really respect him as a researcher. The main concern is weather! I know this sounds kinda lame, but I grew up in South East Asia and California. The winters in New York is already bad enough for me! Hahahaha... and I honestly don't know my chances cause I am applying to too many top-tier schools

  7. Hi guys! I am applying for University of Toronto's social psychology program. I heard this is very very competitive, and I'm worried about my chances (I don't want to apply for a school I won't get in).

I was wondering if you guys know anything about the Psychology Academic Interest form. I can't find it anywhere, and the only way I get to see it is after I pay the application fee. I want to prepare for the writing part before applying, so anyone know a way??

  8. Hey guys! Seems like the competition is pretty intense this year! Now I'm really worried about my chances!! Haha

I am applying for both OB and Social Psych PhD. Primary research interest is how judgment and decision making are influenced by culture, stereotypes, nonverbal behavior, & power

Currently a senior at a small Liberal Arts college

GRE: I took the new one so I don't have my scores yet. With the estimated score given, I did poorly on Verbal but I did fairly well on Quantitative

    GPA: 3.74; Major GPA: 3.82

2+ years of research experience, 1 publication in Sex Roles, 1 poster at a large conference, 1 talk at a regional student conference

Writing my senior thesis at the moment

    Possibly very good LOR (hopefully)

    Schools (OB):

    INSEAD

Harvard Business School (joint program with psychology)

    Columbia Business School

    WUSTL Olin School

    UCSD Rady (backup)

And Mike, I'm curious, who are you planning to work with at Berkeley (or who you contacted)? And what is your master thesis on :) ? BTW, Galinsky in Kellogg is supposedly a big name in creativity! I'm applying to work with William Maddux at INSEAD who also worked with Galinsky and also does research in creativity
