  1. I would avoid HU housing. It's pretty expensive for what you get, although it is close if that matters. I know for HDS the school has set up resources to help people find off-campus housing and roommates, I assume GSAS has done the same.

There's really nothing to be worried about, aside from the usual level of alertness you should have in any city. There were a couple muggings last year of people walking alone on back streets at 2am with headphones on, and things like that.

I've lived in Boston my whole life and have been at Harvard since 2010, so both of you should feel free to PM me.

    thank you telkanuru!

We have had a lot of bomb blasts in New Delhi over the past few years. If we get scared and let it affect our lives too much, then the terrorists win.

The housing outside (graduate commons) and the rent ranges discussed throughout this thread seem very high compared to the residence halls.

a room in the residence halls is in the range of $6300-8,000 for the academic year. As low as $700. and yes i would like to be close otherwise there is the danger that i may not make it to the classes/school in winters!

    I will PM the rest.

    Thanks a lot!!

  2. I honestly am leaning towards Oxford. The Columbia MA is just too expensive and Oxford is such a nice option. And yes I do want a PhD from the US eventually (I did my undergrad there) but an Oxford MA would not hurt my chances for that at a later time would it?

I am myself an international and don't know a great deal.

But I don't thik an MA from Oxford would reduce your chances of a phd in US at all.

Both are excellent univesities with amazing reputation.

in fact a masters from outside the US seems like a plus and Oxford is very impressive.

Also Columbia has a very theoretical approach to anthro..some would say hyper-theoretical.

  3. Hi!

I will be going harvard this fall. Can anyone weigh in on the advantages and disadvantages of opting for the GSAS residence halls.

They seems like the only affordable option on my stipend. However, the housing (single small room with shared bathrroms and kitchens) it comes with the condition that one has to enroll in the dudley cafe meal plan @ $2,268 per year (for only 164 meals). The meal plan seems really costly.

Also please suggest any other options. Cronkhite center housing may not be available in time as it closed for maintenance..

    Thanks

  4. I'm still on the waitlist for UPenn, though I was told by the grad coordinator yesterday when I called that they would let us know by today if there were spots or not for some of us. I guess that can mean 5pm EST. I was accepted by Texas A&M in Feb, but funding isn't great so I really want to hear the final word from UPenn before I make a binding decision. I feel badly for keeping the folks on the A&M waitlist waiting, too! Can't imagine why the person ahead of me with UPenn won't decide already. I guess they must be holding out for even better funding/research possibilities...

    I declined my penn offer..yesterday.

Yes was on harvard waitlist myself...sorry!

    Harvard informed me only yesterday.

  5. I am happy to hear the buzz here again! These last few days were hopelessly quiet.

Congrats to sweetpearl! and Congrats amerianthro!

Platysaurus, harvard is to me what Berkeley is to you!

I don't know how many are on the wait list or where I stand..

why did harvard have to be my top choice?!!.....this is so cliched!!

  6. I'm still on wait list and I don't know if they will contact me by email this time at least! The last time it was by post and it reached a good twenty days after postmarked date..

But it is not very bad for me, I have an excellent acceptance.

But it is a little frustrating for me too and I can only imagine what some of you guys are going through.

    All the best,

  7. hmmm i feel like saying which wait lists people got off of might really clearly identify them, but i recently got off two waitlists, so it is possible!  i will be declining both, so two people are going to get off waitlists very soon :)

    Thanks for sharing!

if you are going to decline I don't think you can be identified. even for the others, the departments do not reveal who got in via waitlists and who the first picks were!

  8. I agree. Plus I have to say I am super confused about the process and the criteria. I am an international student who went to a selective liberal arts college in the US and I have gotten accepted to a few wonderful MA programs in Europe. But no luck with PhD programs in the US. The part that confuses me is that I don't think there is anything really missing from my application, except maybe publications. I have good grades, GRE scores etc. as well as 1 1/2 years of research experience in the area I want to work in and a lot of independent project work in education and the development sector.

I guess I don't really know how to make my application stronger. Get an MA first? get published? Go about the SOP differently?

Is there any way that the lovely people who have gotten lots of offers could tell me a little about their background to help me figure out a strategy for next year?

I would really appreicate it! :)

    Hi!

I must admit I know very little about the whole applications thing, but here are a few thoughts.

I would evaluate MA applications and PhD applications very differently.

I would say the most important thing for phd application is show capability to do original work.

Raise new questions, find a new area of research, prpose a new way of looking at it...of course not just for the heck of it but...only where required.

I have very poor grades and ok recos, and no background in the subject at all.....but I was told that my SoP was original. I am not talking about well crafted sentences and perfect grammar etc..the thoughts expressed.

Sorry to state the obvious, but these things are overlooked sometimes. So the one constructive suggestion that I can give is: have your SoP read by as many people as possible!

The second important thing is targeting you apps correctly...I know because many of mine were mistargeted.

Please be sure that the people reading your proposal are interested in the topic and area ou propose to work on.....and btw did you get god responses from the people PoIs?? An excellent SoP would be a waste if it does not meet the right people.

Thirdly, some schools and profs are willing to give feedback on applications..please make use of this.

By all means do an MA and get published or just get published!

Publications are usually a good indication that you can undertake quality research...though I have none! they are an impressive adition to any CV.

Also after an MA you will be judged as someone who has an MA...you are expected to show more familiarity with the subject and your MA grades will matter more.

But is also shows you committment to the discipline.

    All the best!

    Regards,

  9. has anyone who was in limbo heard any more news from columbia?  i still haven't heard anything back from them and my status hasnt changed! > :P  i want some closure!

Same situation here..don't know what to make of it! I would be really surprised if they don't tell me something before leaving for the weekend. I am assuming that I am on a unofficial wait list!

This may not be relevant here...but I wonder what is taking Syracuse so long!!

  10. Got rejection from NYU....

    Would have preferred UPenn anyways.

But what do they mean "We know that many students to whom we are not able to offer admission are accepted into other excellent programs and we trust you have received positive responses from other schools to which you applied." could they possibly be saying that to everyone!

or did they find out from other universities?

Anyways congrats to the guys who made it!

  11. 4 students were accepted for archaeology at Harvard this year. I wouldn't get your hopes up if you are waiting for that sub div. apparently all girls and all around the same age and all indicated they will accept.

Hey! any such info on Socio-cultural??

I would like to be mentally prepared if possible!!

  12. Hiya kphd! I was also placed on the wait list. The wait list is just a holding place in case the accepted applicants refuse Harvard. As I have understood it, the wait list gives you a little wiggle room. Traditionally, only those who have/will accept another offer will forgo the wait list.

-No idea what the odds are for getting placed on the acceptance from the wait list. I believe that the archaeology side of it (don't know about cultural/bio) will be accepting 3 students-- to be accepted at least one of those 3 have to go somewhere else. I don't know how large the waitlist is. We just have to hope that those accepted students make their decisions sooner rather than later!

-I've seen on other forums on gradcafe that you can ask for an extention on your decision to other schools if you are still waiting for full decisions from other places (i.e. Harvard).

-I don't know what the protocol is for redacting acceptances in case you hear back from somewhere late-- I'd rather ask for an extention to decide than have to try and pull out of a different acceptance.

-Marianne Fritz (Graduate Program Administrator) seems to be the person to direct any questions to.

Once I hear back from all of my schools so that I know my options, I will probably contact her to see how many of their applicants have confirmed their attendance so that I know my odds a little better. If Harvard is your first choice, it may be worth it to wait it out, but there's no way of telling if you'll get in or not. When the incoming class is so small, each decision is wonderfully/terribly idosyncratic. Hope that helps, and best of luck!

    Hey!!

    good to hear from you!

I think I saw one other person from socio-cultural on the wait list (in the results).

Harvard is my top choice...unfortunately my best match is also perhaps the most sought after.

I am also waiting for a decision from Columbia. I think I will take your advice and ask for an extension.

I will not under any circumstances say yes to a school and then back out!

    Thanks for the reply!!

  13. Hi! I have already posted this on the harvard and columbia thread but please bear with me!

Harvard has asked if I would like to be placed on the wait list. What would it mean to be placed on the wait list vis-a-vis other offers?

Does anyone no what are odds of getting off the wait list and onto the "main list" if u will!

Since I have to accept or reject other offers by April 15th and since the guys who got harvard acceptances also have until April 15th..how does this work?

What if I say yes to another place in April 15th and a little later harvard informs me that I have been accepted?

Any information will be highly appreciated!

    Thanks

  15. Hi all!! I am super excited about going to UPenn
    Need some advice on housing...

I want to live as close to the campus as possible: 10-15 min walking distance if possible. I dont want to spend any more time commuting.
I would be a regular user of a library and a gymnasium.
The Benjamin Franklin Fellowship would be my only source of funds.

I have a feeling that most of my life would revolve around the campus.
I do hope to have a social life and chill a bit, but since the only people I will know in Philly are likely to be from UPenn, I think my academic and social life will be closely connected to campus.

The first major decision for me is to decide between on campus housing at $820 p/m (sansom place) and living off campus.
I like the fact that on capmus will mean easy access to library, fitness facilities and dining options.I dont mind paying about 20-30% extra on housing, for the convenience. However, I want to make the most of my stipend!

btw Is it possible to live at sansom place for just one semester? while I figure out other options.

Can somebody tell me what is the rate of taxation on the stipend amount?

Any information, advice, comments or heads up will be highly appreciated.

    Thank you!!
  16. Anybody heading to New York next week for NYU interviews? Or any past-applicants on here who have advice on the NYU visit? I'm excited but a little bit freaking out, haha!

Hey! the interview calls/emails from NYU

Is this only for bio or have they been sent out for socio-cultural too??
