  1. Seconded! Am dying to hear details about this!!!
  2. Possibly these calls are just Rusty Jones notifying the ancient acceptances/WLs? And more to come later from other POIs? (Can you tell from the charity of my interpretation that I really, really want to get into Harvard?)
  3. Received and declined an offer of admission from OSU. Good luck to those on the wait list!
  4. Look into Canadian MA programs. They accept international students and are funded in the sort of way you can live off. Simon Fraser has the best placement rating, probably, but there are other good ones with less competitive admissions. A two year program would give you plenty of time to acquire new, stronger letters, if yours are weak. It is absolutely possible to springboard from a Canadian MA into a top PhD program (if that's your goal, that is -- if you just plan to get the MA, that's cool too).
  5. Looks like Pitt is still sending out wait lists -- one just hit my inbox!
  6. Congratulations, Philhopeful!
  7. Any details about the Pittsburgh acceptances?
  8. I have declined an offer from Indiana Bloomington. I hope this helps somebody out!
  9. Done all of that, and even checked the website!
  10. Is there anyone else who has yet to hear back from UNC at all, rejection or otherwise?
  11. Can you tell us more about the book or at least the publisher? I think sending a physical book along with an application might trigger certain 'crank' alarms, a la dfindley. Getting giant monographs from Unabomber types is actually not uncommon for philosophy departments, so I think it's the sort of inclusion that can easily get read the wrong way.
  12. Jeez, TheVineyard, you're so acrobatically charitable when it comes to Ludlow's motives, but you don't even think we're arguing authentically? The notion that we're all trying to look like blue ribbon allies for GradCafe cred or whatever is borderline comical. I hope your Occam's razor is still on warranty. I don't see any point in engaging you further, so I think I'm probably done doing that. I am going to make myself a really nice white-sauce pasta and open a bottle of wine, though. It is Saturday, after all!
  13. I think it is totally reasonable to put pressure on an institution to not hire somebody who has been accused of this kind of behaviour, especially in light of the fact that an internal committee at Northwestern found him at fault and recommended that he be fired. I think it is also reasonable to put pressure on Northwestern for ignoring the recommendation of that committee. Maybe I'm just a feminist firebrand, but hey, sue me. False accusations are relatively rare and the evidential standards for formally establishing the occurrence of rape are such that perpetrators are seldom able to be held accountable for their actions. I believe and support survivors; it helps me sleep at night.
  14. I concur with what TheMonadology has said.
  15. First: http://www.ndaa.org/pdf/pub_victim_responses_sexual_assault.pdf Second: In light of the resource above, and other considerations, I really don't think this thread should become a space where we cast doubt on this woman's testimony (which I think you've done in an especially ugly, ableist way by intimating that she's either "crazy" or "a liar").
  16. This seems like a good time to mention that most MAs in Canada are fully funded and fund international students. And many of them have very good placement. Some are even still accepting applications, mine included. (I don't want to out my school here, but if you message me I'll give you some links/information.)
  17. Another Yale post!
  18. I don't want to say too much publicly! I did an MA that isn't namedropped on Leiter. My BA school was good, but not top ten, and for the most part I didn't focus on philosophy there. I'm interested in LEMMing stuff, especially mind.
  19. Thank you! The whole thing is striking me fairly speechless.
  20. I can claim one. Not very personalized, but they say that I am receiving one of their highest levels of support, plus a certain amount of supplementary summer funding. So the numbers seem personalized, if not the content, if that makes sense. I'm not sure if schools make offers in waves based on level of support, but, if they do, then this could just be the first of those waves?
  21. Nothing more for me to add, epimeleia_heautou! This is something that was alluded to by somebody else yesterday (around page 41).
  22. iPad + Dropbox + GoodReader = perfect PDF reading/annotating set-up. You can sync GoodReader with your Dropbox and it runs like a dream. For note-taking, there are apps and stuff -- I've seen students using iPads for this purpose -- but I can mostly just attest to how great it is for reading books and papers, since that's all that I use it for.
  23. On the edge of my seat today based on the hint dropped yesterday that a top five might be sending out acceptances. (My top choice looked like a likely candidate.)
  24. Wow, exciting!
  25. Can you quantify "pretty great" a bit? Top 10? 5?
