  1. Kitkat, at Columbia do you have a POI in mind yet? I worked for Jerry McManus at WHOI when he was there and he is a really great guy. I'm not up on his most current research at Columbia but he was working with Icelandic cores 10 years ago. I just saw a post with your interests and thought they were similar.
  2. There's not much in the survey for geosciences from them last year.
  3. Thank you! My husband is military and we're only going to be in the bay erea for four years, so I'm still holding out for going directly to PhD. BUT, I am really relieved to have at least one option no matter what.
  4. Do you think that means rejection and interviews? Probably not acceptances yet? Seems very early compared to their track record.

  6. Inq, Were you accepted/rejected from the Astronomy department or the Earth Science department? I am checking the results page every day and I am SO jealous of the other physical science disciplines. Why does Earth Science have to take so long..seriously. Okay, vent over.
  7. I am teaching high school science, including Chemistry. One of the things that I do, is for the low-stakes assignments we grade them in class together. I date stamp everything (and scan it) to make sure it is completed and then we go over the correct answers. Then, they have to turn them in to me so that I can put them in the grade book. I check to make sure they really corrected their answers. If they did not, then they get a zero. This takes up some class time, but it helps them solidify their understanding. For mid-stakes, I correct and then hand back, giving them the option to make corrections for more points. This cut down a lot on my daily grading. I am really only entering in the grade and doing a quick scan. Plus, they get immediate feedback. Studies show that the sooner the feedback, the better the learning. NOW, if you're not the one interacting with them and you're only doing the grading you're kind of out of luck. As one of my fellow teachers said, "If it wasn't for all the grading teaching would a pretty easy job". Take comfort in knowing that it doesn't last forever.
  8. I am applying to 2 PhD and 3 MS programs in geology. I am interested in tectonics and structural geology with a hint of geochemistry. My husband is in the military and we are being stationed in the Bay Area so I am limited to schools there. Of course, that means Berkeley and Stanford, which I don't think I'm probably highly qualified enough for but I'm trying anyway. The other three are San Francisco State, UC-East Bay, and San Jose State. San Jose State will be a bit of a commute but probably the best fit. If I get Standford or Berkeley though I will definately take that. I have been out of college for 8 years, so that has made it a bit tough. I didn't do any research projects but I did work at WHOI as a lab assistant so I have a little bit of experience. Of course, haven't been able to get ahold of my old boss from there to do a letter of rec. My projected score on the latest GRE was 1300-1450. Not as high in the math as I hoped. But, I know once I get the scores we will see how the actual new style scores pan out.
