Congrats Zissou! Why only two programs? Congrats genericncognito on Northwestern!
-
OH BOOOO! Oh well.... Zissou- you got an interview at Yale? Have you applied this year? What schools/
-
@lavendercloud- are they flying you out? What is the process going to be like? Yale, where are YOU?????
-
Congrats Lavendercloud!!!!
-
It didn't necessarily rub me the wrong way. But I felt last years' letter was more personal. It also would of been nice to get the rejection letter than the email about checking your online status. Also thought it was funny, when you go to check your status, the webpage is all red. lol. @lavendercloud- Yes, I read that article! Made me want to apply to Brooklyn!
-
Got a rejection from Brown. Wasn't very high up on my list anyway. EDIT: Just received a email from Erik Ehn. It's a mass email, but kinda encouraging. One school left to hear back from for me. Ughhhhhhh.
-
That's a good lot. In hindsight, I wish I applied for Iowa and Juilliard. Yeah, I have the same question as Princess.
-
What are your other six?
-
@lavendercloud- oh wow, that makes me more anxious. LOL. And he's out of town... Just wondering, especially since I haven't seen anything regarding Brown interviews, etc on this thread. @Barista- Sorry! Was this just on the MyStatus thingy?
-
Congrats @princess! Excited to hear what it is! Also, does anyone know if Brown does interviews?
-
@Barista- Yes! Having the same issues with these development/reading workshops. I always try and read all the theatre and workshops/productions before I submit. But no catch yet. But I definitely will keep trying. Also with waitlist and stuff, I would assume most people don't turn down all the fully funded schools. But likely if you're a candidate at one, you might come up on the radar at another. LIke with Lavendercloud's friend. My sense is that it happens, but not too often. @Lavender- Yes, Yale and Brown are my last schools. I'm over joyed with my lot now. I'm just eager to get a yes or no. Also scheduling interviews are tough with the my current schedule!
-
@lavender @sings Thanks! I'm very excited! I''m working out a date with Naomi now. My UT interview is on the 27th. @lavender Yeah, I've been applying to theatre, awards, fellowships. A lot of those big ones (Princess Grace, PONY) seem to be beneficial to those WITH an MFA. So I feel like I don't really have a chance Maybe not. Some of the opportunities are very valuable. But they seem out of reach for some reason. Also I've applied to many submissions with fees, even though I've been told by many playwrights not to pay for submissions. And it does ads up and with all those MFA application fees... I'm going to try and do a residency at an artist colony this summer, if I can get one. I have two more schools to hear from. And it's driving me CRAZY.
-
Sorry Lavender! Keep your head up! That comment sounds like you're still in the running. You never know what could happen! I also heard from Naomi last night. I moved on to the shortlist and will be flying down for an interview!

Oh good to know! I guess we won't being hearing for Yale or Brown on Monday. Austin's theatre scene casts a pretty wide net. There is lots of experimental, weird, theatre at the smaller theatres in town. Lots of 24 hour play festivals, Frontera Festival and Fusebox- which are fringe festivals, And lots of devised work, some done by the Rude Mechanicals- the head of playwriting at UT, Kirk Lynn is one of the founders. Zach Scott theatre does a lot of musicals, newer plays, and old schools stuff for the rich people in town. They are the biggest theatre in town and surprisingly they don't have a literary department for new works despite the profits faculties and resources they have- unless they're by Steven Dietz. Austin theatre scene is small-ish (or not as big as NYC), but there are a lot of different avenues you can take. A lot of companies, playwrights and directors fundraise and crowdsource to produce theatre. Which makes for a lot of different, inspiring and interesting work being made. There's also a lot of film work, professional, amateur, and MFA, being done all around the city. QUESTION: How does everyone do on submissions? I'e been submitting my work for over a year. And I've only got one or two hits so far. I know it's a lot about if your work fits the theatre's missions, audiences, etc. How does everyone fair in that department?

Oh interesting! The Screenwriting program is very good at UT. And Michener and UT playwriting are taught by the same teachers. Also UT is not off on President's day. I don't think most universities participate in that holiday. So maybe some decisions will be made. Yale should be out near the 22nd- that was when notifications for interviews were sent ls last year
-
@Barista- You're welcome! I think "in review" could potentially be a good thing with them. Yes, but a lot could happen in two weeks. I would kind of preferred the interviews to be sooner. I'm so anxious. Oh good for her!!! That makes sense. Honestly, idk, if I could turn down the money... Why did y'all decide to apply for just Michener this year and not both programs?
-
@Barista - I found out two days ago by email from Dietz. I applied for both the MFA through Michener and UT Department of Theatre and Dance. Yes, my app still says "In Review." The interview day isn't until the 27th of this month. They may still be contacting folks.
-
Oh interesting! I haven't heard much about Ohio. Thank you! I'm in Austin! So it's just a drive over. I'm wondering about being in the running for Michener and UT. It makes me go through lots of scenarios in my head. Wow! That's interesting. Why did they choose Brown? Better fit/aesthetic over funding, I'm assuming? Thanks! This is very helpful. I have some rote questions I always ask. But that gives me more ideas of what to ask. I also went back and found what you said about UCSD. Also that sounds promising! I wonder if they'll be notifying finalist soon.
-
Thanks lavender and princess!!!! Very exciting! Waiting to hear back from UCSD about in person interviews. I also got an email from UT stating that I'm a finalist for UT and Michener!!! Freaking out!!! What does anyone know about UCSD interview process? I always get stuck when they ask me if I have ANY questions. Suggestions on questions to ask prospective programs? Is Ohio fully funded?
-
I got a phone interview with the folks at UCSD, Allan and Deborah (a newer playwriting faculty). I was notified by email on Friday. Talked with Allan Sunday. I'll talk with Deborah soon. Allan said after the interview, it would be about 10 days for decisions on who to bring to campus. Other than that, waiting...... And it's killing me. This is so painful. From creeping back in the forum, around this week people were called for finalist/interviews for Michener and UT. So maybe some news soon!!!! Hopefully!
-
Ohhhhh. That's rather odd, especially for a program with their funding. Ruth McKee was rather new too.. Did your friend give any insight of these continuous changes. Haven't heard anything yet! From my going back on this thread, we're not hearing back for interviews until mid to late February. Is that accurate? Since Yale moved up the deadline, do you think they'll be letting us know earlier? Lol I'm very anxious about this already and nothing's really happened yet.
-
@lavendercloud- Thanks for the info!! @princessinanothercastle- I work at a university and our admissions director mentioned it. Also some folks over at MFA Draft '15 (more for the creative writing people, a few playwrights there) on Facebook have been talking about it. And I think have more concrete data. Some schools allow you to look at the number of applications for each school. Another reason they site is that the economy is doing well. I'm not sure if any of this is true, but it's nice to dream.

Hello, Been stalking this blog for a while. Decided to finally post and apply! I've turned all my apps in to: Yale Brown UT Austin Michener UCSD Now the waiting game... I've been hearing a lot around admissions that graduate applications are down across the country. I guess this helps with the odds of getting in? Also does anyone know about the funding info about UCSD? From what I've read the first year is not funded, but year two and three are? Good luck to everyone! I assume this board will see more activity closer to interviews/acceptance times.
-
Freaking out for this next round of applications already! Dec is so close. EKKKKK!

Hello, I'm looking to apply for Fall 2015. I know I'm early but I had some questions. I'm a newer writer. I graduated two years ago and I haven't had anything produced, no fellowships, or contest winnings. I'm looking to apply to the fully funded programs- lots of undergraduate debt from UT Austin!- and I was wondering how important having readings, productions and etc. for the Big Four are? I've been told that these places, especially Michener, want a little more seasoned playwright. Thoughts?
