  1. more is better! I applied to 11, got into 2 and waitlisted on a 3rd. all the fees do add up - so you might ask family for some donations (i did)...
  2. From experience, YES, if you can visit, visit. I applied for PhD programs in composition 3 times. The first time I got into Illinois and Minnesota, but decided to get a second master's at Queen's University Belfast instead. The second time I was waitlisted at NYU but rejected from the others. The third time I was accepted to Buffalo and Florida. In every case except Minnesota, I had either visited the school or chatted with a professor at my school or a conference. At some schools, you are one of 100 applicants, so the personal touch definitely helps!
  3. Hi all - posting this in several places... I'd like to plug my program at the University of Florida. We have a fairly young PhD program, so it's a little off-the-radar for some, but it's getting better and better each year. Very good fellowships/assistantships (up to $16k), VERY collegial, and very eclectic (most of us do some acoustic and some electronic music, we also do some free improv, installations, etc.). Feel free to email me with questions: adamscottneal at gmail. comp website: http://www.arts.ufl.edu/composition
  4. hi all - just wanted to plug my school, the University of Florida. We are a little off the radar for most people, but starting to change that! Cheap application fee ($35 i think), very good fellowships/assistantships (up to $16k) in comp/theory and musicology. And it never gets cold... feel free to email me for warts-and-all info: adamscottneal at gmail. http://www.arts.ufl.edu/welcome/music/ <== music dept. website http://www.arts.ufl.edu/composition <=== composition website (there is a musicology website but it's several years out of date!) good luck to you all!
  5. "Fallen Brethren" - sounds like a good name for a composers collective...maybe we could all put on concerts with each others' music at our respective schools...
  6. That sucks. I was waitlisted there last year, thought that would mean I would have a good shot this time.
  7. Last year I got reject emails from both Columbia and Stony Brook on 3/15. Anyone hear from NYU-GSAS? Any word from funding at Buffalo? I was accepted and they haven't answered my email query on funding.
  8. According to the results search from last year, if you are accepted to Columbia, you will be contacted the first week of March. All the rejectees will be contacted around the 15th. In my 2 previous tries for Princeton, I got rejection the 3rd Friday of February (i.e. TOMORROW). Last time I applied to UCSD I got the rejection on the 3rd Friday as well. It was a sad day!
  9. Hi Timothy - we corresponded months ago and then I got hyperbusy - sorry I never got back to you! Anyway, just wanted to say hi to everyone else too. I was on this site like everyday last year, and besides being busy I'm trying reeeeally hard not to obsess this year! I'm applying for PhD/DMA in Comp. This is my third try - first time I decided to do a second master's instead of going to the places I was accepted, second time I was rejected from all five (Columbia, Princeton, NYU-GSAS, CUNY, Stony Brook). This time I applied to: Brown, Buffalo, Columbia, NYU-GSAS, Princeton, Virginia, Florida, Chicago, Stanford, UCSB, and UCSD. I already got a rejection from UCSB, just waiting to hear from the rest. I know it's painful, but be patient! Last year I got an early rejection from CUNY, then didn't hear anything until the end of February. I was on the waiting list at NYU - heard from them around 3/15...then finally at the end of March I got all my rejections. Schools I have spoken to say they don't even begin looking at apps until the end of January - so they maybe had their first meeting this week. With 100 apps and 2-3 spots in some places - it's gotta be a tough job. Best of luck to all - and hopefully we'll meet at school/concerts/conferences in the future!
  10. Hey there - I'll commiserate with ya. I'm a composer - applying for PhDs for the 3rd time. 1st time I got into 2 PhD programs but decided to get a 2nd master's instead, next time I didn't get into any schools at all! I'm applying to 12 schools this year, so I better get somethin'. GRE is out of the way - not great, but out of the way. I think my portfolio and writing samples are in good shape, just working on The Statement.
  11. I think I saw someone post on the results that they were accepted to Columbia. Columbia and Princeton are both great but have a different "feel" from what I can tell. Princeton is more "downtown-ish." I was rejected from Princeton, still waiting on Columbia...
  12. Someone asked about my post today about being waitlisted at NYU - this was for GSAS, not Steinhardt. cheers, a
