  1. Hey all,

    Here's my dilemma:

I was offered full-tuition fellowship at GWU Elliott, and none at Columbia SIPA.

My parents have offered to pay for Columbia (since they didn't have to pay for any of my undergrad), but I feel rather guilty, as I have a younger brother that still needs to go to college, and wants to go to med school. I, on the other hand, am fairly certain that whatever job I end up in post-graduate school, will not pay so well.

Is it worth it to shell out the 65k+/year at SIPA, or am I better off living a little more comfortably at Elliott? I'd like to hear your opinions/experiences on both programs.

    Cheers,

    Wishing for a Money Tree

I live here in DC and there is a ton of networking here with either the Elliot school or Columbia degree. I am not sure how your family is financially, but I would choose the Elliott school for the full-ride. Plus you don't know how the economy will be down the road. And that is my 2 cents. :)

  2. so how is HKS for food security? i'm familiar with the research centers at Kennedy, but i didn't know there was anything solid for agricultural-oriented studies there.

Well I already have a ton of agricultural background but I want to tie that in with national and international security policies/affairs, whick HKS has.

  3. hm. never really thought about the security aspect of my daily nourishment. that's interesting!

IGA is a hot focus at HKS. multidisciplinary -- which is what i'm sure attracted a lot of us to IR in the first place -- and getting a lot of attention right now. there is also an internship program that offers funding exclusively for IGA concentrators through the Belfer Center at HKS (http://www.hks.harvard.edu/degrees/mast ... nternships).

Thanks for the advice and for the info.

Yeah I am thinking I might only be one of a few people (or not many), who applied for the IGA that have an agriculture background, and want to do food security.

  4. Are you talking about straight up admissions? There are still people who haven't been admitted yet or are you refering to the second wave of scholarship considerations?

Yes I have not been admitted/rejected yet. According to the website, I was suppose to find out last month or earlier this month and April is just around the corner.

  5. Is there a minimum GRE/GMAT score or GPA required to apply?

We do not require a minimum score for the GRE/GMAT examination or a minimum GPA.

ThIs is from the link. Where is the minimum score?

I don't have any stats any where for you but this link might help.

    http://www.hks.harvard.edu/degrees/admi ... s-profiles

I do remember reading a few years back, and they said some of the Kennedy students scores were in the 700 range (GMAT overal score). I found it on the Kennedy website back in 2005 I think. Not sure if they took it down. Not sure how to compare it with the GRE scores.

There is no min. GPA that you are asking about. If there where, I probably would not have applied.

  6. Dammit, I still haven't heard anything. Wrote the IR admissions staff four days ago, but no reply. I know I only send in my application a few days before deadline (end of January), but I would still expect a decision by now.

Did you try giving them a ring or call at least?

  7. So here is my dilemma.

I have been admitted to Pitt GSPIA and American SIS. Pitt is for Security and Intel Studies and American is for International Politics. At AU I would be concentrating in Int Security. My original inkling would be to go Pitt since it is a pure security program, but then again SIS is a top 10 school of IR. What to do?

    Hi jly !

I live here right here in DC. I would go to AU for the masters degree since you have networking here in DC.

Plus I would also which one would be cheaper down the road or you would not be too much in debt.

    Best of luck !

  8. So applikant posted his MPA-ID decision at 2:48 Harvard time yesterday.

What's the over/under on when MPP applicants will hear? I'm going to be optimistic and say decisions will start rolling out today at 1:57. I have no reason for believing this, it's just a hunch. I also think that funding decisions won't be available until the last week in March.

Also, how many people from these boards will post an acceptance? I'm going to say 7. What do you think? over? under? Will any Cinderellas make it to the big dance?

I predict that we will not hear admissions until March 30/31. Sad to say...Yes I know.

I think 10 will get accepted, 20 rejections, and a few wait listed. And we or I will not hear until 4:50 p.m. (ET) on March 30.

As far as the cinderella teams go, I predict Arizona over Utah by 3 points in a last second shot to prevent overtime.

  9. I think they are pretty disorganized and I have seen a lot of disorganized things in my days. I was out with some Georgetown students last night and forgot to ask them what they though of the GPPI admissions folks.

Anyways, I contacted the G-town Admissions office yesterday and they NOW said we are suppose to hear back on Monday, March 23 in who gets in or not. So hopefully that happens...Anyone care to place their bets or wages?!?

I just think is crazy how some people have not heard a pep yet and especially with their open houses around the corner. Luckily if I get in, I am not that far from DC in order to attend.

But I think it is terrible how I don't hear anything. I sent them various emails and I know they get a ton of them...but I never once got a response execpt for one of them when I did not execpt to get one.

The schools that I have been accepted to and other schools that I have not found out yet have been in constant communications with me. Not sure what the deal is with Gtown? :(

  10. I haven't either. More than a month ago I received an email from Emmett Griffin saying that I should have received a decision in about 2 weeks. Since then, no news whatsover... I emailed him back twice, and so the admissions office, and got no reply. Don't think there's too much to worry about though, as on the results page there's very few posts concerning the GPPI (MPP in my case).

Well I guess it will come when it comes, and I guess they are getting a ton more applications than normal. Just have to wait and see 8)

  11. I applied for the IGA program track as well. The only additional funding that you are mentioning or that I am aware of was the harvard fellowship essay. I did apply for that though by the deadline.

As far as the application essays go, I talked about food security (since I worked at USDA for a few years) in relation to national and international security. I believe it is an important area of security that individuals don't really look into. If our overall food area is attacked, we are all screwed. :(

  12. Well I don't know about loans and I'm still waiting on possible funding from the IR/PR program. However I did visit for the MPA program in the fall and I remember students saying that there are opportunities for GAs and jobs and such that you may get after enrolling but obviously there are no guarantees and if you don't get specified funding before enrolling you should be prepared to pay for the whole thing yourself (however you plan to loans, etc.) But that said the entire school is very large and there are definitely possibilities for GAs and the like once you arrive. I have no idea what kind of percentage of people eventually get these or even how many people get initial funding. Sorry you didn't have better news. Good luck with your decision!

I am in the same boat and got the MPA funding email. I plan on applying for GA and RA jobs throughout campus. I don't think there are presently that many GA jobs open now but I have a feeling a ton will open up later. You just have to check the student employement website for openings constantly like right now. I can tell you that there are a few openings right now and looking for folks for the 2009-2010 school year. Might as well get an early start. I am doing the same.

  13. I was accepted to the MPIA program, on the IED track. Can't wait!

I've lived in big cities all my life, including undergrad at UH, so life in CS will take some getting used to. At least Houston and Austin are only an hour and a half away...

Cool. I went to Texas A&M for my undergraduate and graduated 5 years ago. My little brother is there now or graduates in a year or 2 I think. But you will love it there along with the campus and surrounding community. As for me I am still deciding on schools and sill playing the waiting game between now and then.

  15. Hi thewaitinggame09,

Maybe you should change your username since I guess you know the results by now  . Anyway, are you dead set on Maxwell? I really hope they send out funding info soon.

Well, yes maybe I should. But I guess I like to keep myself guessing on schools still. :D

I am waiting to hear back from a few more schools. I think I am kinda leaning towards that program but I plan on visiting the school in early April to make a decision.

They are suppose to send funding stuff to everyone no later than April 1.

  16. Where do SU students go for internships usually? NYC? Isn't it a good 4-5 hrs away? How marketable is an SU Maxwell diploma? I am so torn and deciding where to go is usually the first thing that comes into my mind upon waking up and the last thing I think about before going to bed.

    Hi 040404 !

I actually got accepted to the MPA program and I plan on concentrating on National and International Security Policy.

Anyways, I actually have a Maxwell School flier right here (from the mail back when they mailed me stuff about the program), and they have internship agreements across the world!!

Also here is a link to their website of global programs that they have: So there area plenty of places to go and intern in the world :)

    http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/ir/globalpro ... p-main.asp

Even though I have 5 years work experience and counting in DC, I plan on interning abroad and/or doing research on counter-terrorism.

FYI - I went to a Maxwell Alumni function last week in DC and I was really impressed with Alumni here in DC and with the networking. Plus I am sure the reputation here in DC is just as good in NYC and across the world. I found out from talking to folks and networking they don't call the "Maxwell Mafia" for nothing.

Also, by doing a ton of research on my own over the last few weeks and going to the Almuni event, the Maxwelll School , the Alumni, and its contacts have plenty of opportunities for its students. :)

That is one of the reasons why I am really excited about the program and just about 4 months ago I had no idea about the program.

Also, I am not looking forward to the weather too and I am from the South where it barely snows. So it will make two of us.

    I hope this helps.

  17. I plan to get my mpa and specialize in intl dev and nonprofit management. I've been accepted to several programs but the most generous offer (full tuition) comes from a school that has a great nonprofit management program but in terms of intl dev, i'm not so sure. i guess i'll have to wait to see when i visit the school and hear back from ppl i've emailed at the program.

how about you guys? what if your top choice gives you little or no money? will you take a fully funded 2nd or 3rd choice over it?

especially with the economy and apps on the rise this year, i think i may be tempted to just take the offer and try to get as much out of the program as possible. if a school offers you a lot doesn't that mean they also think you woudl be a great fit for their program and they also believe they could offer you the kinds of opportunities you're seeking?

i guess im pretty confused right now. i know after grad school i def dont want a lot of debt bc of the field i plan of going into so i guess getting this degree for free seems like the most logical conclusion....

any thoughts? they would be much appreciated!

TAKE the free ride in this day and age (economy wise) especially if other schools next year dont have money to give. But definitely go visit the campus if you have not done so yet. The money that you would have used for debt can be used for future investments (house, vacaction). :)
