Pitt for Composition?
ahhjudy replied to depthof_field's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
pitt has been around for a long while. picking up on comebackzinc's other posts: fit is everything. EVERYTHING. with this said, if pitt fits . . . acq . . . wait. i mean, it's a great program, and i think you'll be well prepped for a good job out of there. it's a liberal program, not squarely within the rhet/comp field/interests (besides barth), but this could be a great benefit when you hit the market. assuming you develop your knowledge of rhet/comp proper (whatever this may mean), then you'll stand out. you'll be different. and they're doing great work with rhetoric and activism as well as digital/multimodal literacies/rhetoric. good stuff there. -
i qualified for a scholarship from the Community of Scholars Program on campus. basically, the graduate college flies me there, i visit a bunch of college-related stuff, and i make time to meet faculty and grad students in the program. they'd nominate you if you qualified, i think. i think it kind of depends on how badly the state is hit with state funding cuts. i think illinois is not super bad, but i know from a friend who attended NIU that they were hit somewhat. with that said, what you get in return (for no campus visit) is a guaranteed 7 years of support. pretty effing sweet if you ask me. if there's no question as to whether you'll go, then i wouldn't spend the money visiting. if it might influence how you swing, then i would.

Penn State (not acceptance post)
ahhjudy replied to perrykm2's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I removed myself from the waitlist a few hours ago. Offers elsewhere. Best of luck! -
Good news is (for others?) that I just removed myself from the PSU waitlist. Isn't going to work for me and my wife. Hope this helps someone else out!

Penn State (not acceptance post)
ahhjudy replied to perrykm2's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
it's my post. i'm in rhet/comp, so i imagine we aren't competing for same spots. -
encouraging news, impending. i imagine they have 2-3 offers out for students with MA in hand--maybe fewer than 3. if any of these decline, then they'll move to what i imagine is a short list. your ASU deadline is insane, btw. not cool.

They said, "Because of the nature of our program, we have very few lines open for applicants with MAs in hand." I get the sense that my status is less like a member of a "wait list" and more like an "alternate." 2nd string starter?

Email from Penn State DGS this morning. Interested in my app and want to make me an offer, but need a TA line to open up. According to him, they let very few applicants in who already have MAs. Though never used the term, I'm pretty sure I've been . . . dah, duh, dahhhhh . . . waitlisted . . .

I think Penn State is in the thick of it right now. A member of the graduate faculty called my WPA yesterday asking questions about my application. I was sitting in the room with her when the phone rang! This is to say, no decisions yet but should be coming soon. I was bummed not to hear something today, but I imagine offers might be out by next week. I also spoke with a grad student in the program a few weeks ago (2 maybe?) whose friend is on the selection committee and the comm. wanted to extend offers within 3 weeks. Campus visit is at end of March, I think.

mrock, my wife was accepted a few weeks ago and has been in close contact with faculty member. as i understand it, offers are out. you should be able to see if you're waitlisted on the website. login to my.wisc. then navigate to the page where you can see all the materials you submitted (they should have check marks next to them). there will be a "Note:" there stating that you've been waitlisted and on what date it your waitlist status was processed.

Hi All, I'm stopping in here to see if anyone who has applied to rhet/comp specialization at Arizona, Penn State, Miami (Ohio), or Purdue has heard anything yet. If you do or if you have, let me know! Don't think these schools have started notifying yet.

Illinois Acceptance
ahhjudy replied to Rupert Pupkin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I posted the acceptance. The email was out of the ordinary. My wife was accepted a few weeks ago, and I've been corresponding with the dept. since then. Most should receive notification via postal service. DGS said they sent the letters out last Friday, so this week sometime. My emphasis is in Writing Studies. -
Michigan State - WRAC
ahhjudy replied to TheLadyT's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm on the waitlist at MSU, and spoke with BH-D, the DGS. He said there are 6 offers out, and when one rejects, the line starts moving again (the waitlist line). So, I'd say you're in, no interview.- 3 replies
