  1. Is USC planning on like 3 people matriculating?
  2. Wow...only 10 people were accepted to USC? Does anybody know how many people applied?
  3. Still no word from Madison after a wave of acceptances yesterday. Has anybody received their rejection emails? I'm still pending....no email.
  4. "Mang" is some word they've used in a few of their songs...like dude or man. They're a totally awesome band. The live DVD was filmed in Chicago. I'd suggest the Mollusk, Chocolate and Cheese, or Quebec for starters.
  5. The past results surveys do show that people received acceptances days apart from each other. Mang and Quantitative: lets all send acceptance brainwaves to the department for each other. By the way mang, do you listen to Ween?
  6. JK...congratulations
  7. Chuck...Foul!
  8. Mine still shows pending...but I thought that meant the supporting documents.
  9. Yeah me too....I guess we'll know by tomorrow
  10. Well, if 2 people received acceptance emails around 7:30, I bet there are another 10 people out there at least who have already gotten acceptance emails, but who haven't posted on this site. I hope they are still working on sending on everything right now...it's almost 9:00 CST
  11. Great...thanks! Hopefully they are still working on it now.
  12. To the couple people accepted so far: would you mind posting what time you received your emails?
  13. I guarantee UCLA and Berkeley look at the first two years....even if they aren't "calculated".
  14. Oh..and your question...do you really think any school ONLY looks at the last two years?
  15. There isn't a formula for this type of thing. I would suggest being above a 3.5. People have been accepted to "Top-20" schools with a lower GPA than this however according to the results survey of previous years.
  16. I think the more you worry and say "I'm not getting in", the more you are going to create that. Sounds "new-agey" but maybe try saying "I'll get in somewhere". Slumgullion has a good idea too...move to Austin and introduce yourself to the UT faculty if need be.
  17. LOL: you should be able to get both sub. and unsub. loans through the government. There are certain cut-offs however, one being something like no more than $160,000 in total Fed. aid from both sources. Call the financial aid office wherever you're accepted.
  18. I'd like to attend Madison even if I had to pay my way for at least part of it (assuming I was making good progress, I could apply for funding). I wonder if the department would go for that.
  19. Well, only 9 new entries last year...maybe they can afford 15 this time around.
  20. Have you gotten any responses to your emails?
  21. The nice thing about sociology is that you can study basically anything. We wouldn't necessarily, for example, do cancer research, what we would study the people, institutions, technologies, fundings, and policies that do.
  22. From what you've described, in my opinion, the only thing that may "hurt" your admissions is the "probably so-so" LOR's. Political science and economics are both strongly linked with sociology-everyone knows that. You could craft a good statement based upon your background and make perfect sense to a sociologist. Moreover on LOR's, how are you supposed to establish really strong connections with your professors as an undergrad? I always had the impression that they were too busy for me.
  23. Super: I feel you...some thoughts I've had are getting another Master's and working on that, starting some program, group, etc. or learning a new skill in the community that I'm interested in, retake the GRE and try to do better, finding a super part-time job doing statistics stuff, or just reaching out to people more with my concerns. I think most people feel like you do...I certainly do!
  24. It's funny how "inviting" the application site is..."we look at everything, there are no cut-off's" etc. etc. They should add a new line...."By the way, we've become beyond competitive so unless you are perfect, don't expect to be accepted.
  25. Maybe this is because so many applicants applied. 15-20% acceptance on 350 is somewhere between 50-70 people out of 350. That seems kind of high, so maybe my information is wrong.
