  1. I can't tell you anything about ASU but I can tell you Clemson is in no way, shape or form LGBT-friendly. The campus invited several performers who were openly anti-gay last year. There is a small pride group on campus but they are more of a support group and not too active with the larger campus community. I also spent a lot of time in Greenville and though I never experience any anti-gay displays there, well, I never experienced any LGBT scene either. If there was one I never saw it. In fact I did not meet a single person in my time in SC who openly admitted to being gay or lesbian.

    Clemson, SC

I don't know anything about your program but I do know Clemson. Clemson is a college town in the truest sense of the word. It's a safe area but it's not meant for families. Bar scene is the main thing going on there. Renting an apartment anywhere in Clemson or Central will mean noisy neighbors. I might recommend Seneca. Its a 15 min. commute (20 tops if you're on the far side of town) with a little more going on, access to some shopping, and more activities on the weekend for families. Anderson is a small city also about 20 mins from Clemson, although the downtown area doesnt seem too safe to me. Greenville is a really nice city, lots to do, 45 minute drive to Clemson. Never heard about too much crime in Greenville. I moved to Clemson from NY so rent/groceries/gas seemed cheap to me everywhere! As a young woman living alone, crime seemed fairly low in general. Like I said, only time I felt uncomfortable was in certain parts of Anderson, never in Clemson or elsewhere.
  3. i dont see how any admissions comittee would look down on you for finishing an MS in 4 years! those courses are good preparation for a phd, but be prepared for the fact that you may find yourself repeating some courses if you go to a different school for a phd (even if that school claims to accept transfer credit).
  4. look into NYU, Rutgers New Brunswick, NJIT, Stevens...in that order
