anyone want to claim the Columbia rejection/specify what kind of email it was?
-
thanks nat! that sounds a lot like the itineraries i've gotten. when people meet with the professors, what kind of things are typically discussed? do professors see it as an opportunity for them to sell you on the program? or do i need to come in with a spiel and topics prepared to discuss?

anyone want to claim the Cornell acceptance?

Teach English abroad?

I appreciate the vote of confidence! Broadly speaking, I applied under region X to work with an expert on region X. My primary interests fit solidly within region X. But, I have secondary interests that involve the relationship between region X and region Y. So what if in three years I find myself more on the region Y side of things? Or what if my secondary interests become my primary interests? Is this the kind of thing that happens all the time in graduate programs, and do professors expect this to happen? I don't want to go to a program and have my advisor expect me to do research on particular topics and then gradually shift away from those (as I take coursework in the first couple of years, etc) and then run into problems with my advisor being mad or something. Or maybe this is completely irrational!

would you mind elaborating on this? (why he loves it...advisor? the people? the program itself? etc) via PM would be fine if you'd prefer...for some reason I can't get the 'send message' button to work.

Oooh does he have any idea where he'll be going?

So to get back to the original intent of this thread ("chit chat") a bit, what is everyone planning to do this summer? Traveling? Trying to prepare in some way for their first semester of a PhD? Language study? Vacation? A combination of these? I'm hoping to intern with a yet-to-be decided NGO in Europe, plus do some grammar review for language exams. Some of my friends want to travel around Spain in May as well, so that might happen.

sent you a PM.

I'm pretty in awe of your decisiveness, I have to say.

Someone said a few pages (okay, maybe 10 pages, but probably a couple days) ago that Cornell wasn't meeting until the end of the month...but according to the results survey they've typically released decisions around mid-February. Is the end of the month meeting thing just an anomaly this year, or will some decisions mayyyybe be coming out this week? (Pretty please?!)
-
agreed!!
-
Can we, like, place bets on which schools will be notifying this week so I don't have to - gasp - study for my quiz tomorrow?
-
it does NOT feel like the third week of february. just saying.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if most Berkeley grad students live in Berkeley/Oakland, or if it's feasible to live in San Francisco...and if so, do many grad students live in San Francisco? Are there particular SF neighborhoods that are better/more convenient for Berkeley than others? A couple of my non-future grad student friends are moving to the Bay Area in the fall, and if I decide to go to Berkeley I was thinking of maybe living with them...

Also, have something to say in response to "is there anything else you'd like to tell me?" I was asked this at the end of an interview and it was...awkward.
-
I'd also recommend printing out your SOP and resume, reading through them, and highlighting the main points. I helps me during phone conversations when I'm asked something specific about my background and I can just glance down and find it more quickly...definitely makes it seem less stressful.

Maybe they're not done accepting people?
-
I'd like to know this too.

hahah...one of my siblings came home from college over winter break and told our parents he was going to major in history and wants to be a billionaire when he grows up. the naiveté of youth.
