Personally, I'd leave it alone. You'll know soon enough

I think this is what most departments say, regardless of when they in fact release decisions. That page was last modified on November 23, so it isn't a reflection of how the application review process is going at UCLA. I would guess it's just a general "by mid-March we'll have most decisions sent out, but acceptances will probably be out sooner" type of thing.

I'm not a Koreanist personally but one of my siblings is. Quite a few universities here in the states offer intensive summer language programs in Korean...I'm thinking Michigan, UCLA, UChicago (I'm pretty sure, but double check that), and I'm sure there are others. There are also language programs at Seoul National University and Korea University over the summer that I'm aware of. Of course, there's also the Critical Language Scholarship but the deadline was in the fall - so that's something to think about applying for concurrently with your applications next fall.

oooh seriously? Nice inside info!

Many departments have international/transnational/global/etc fields for comparative work just like you're describing; in fact, it seems to be the "trendy" thing these days. For the ones that don't, I'm in a similar situation with my research interests and have had success contacting POIs and simply laying out my research interests and asking them which field they think I should apply under. Many have told me that X field is more competitive numbers-wise but more open (in terms of what the faculty is doing) to comparative/transnational work even though Y field is more closely aligned with my regional interests, or something similar, and then given me advice about which field would be more advantageous for applications. So I would really recommend contacting professors directly and asking them. I'm sure they'd be extremely interested to hear about your research and language skills. Plus, if you're already in an MA program, your adviser would more than likely have some ideas about this. In sum, ask around - sounds like you have an interesting project in mind and in my experience the professors at these schools are more than willing to help in the pre-application stages of the process. Good luck!

Broke and Grad School Recruitment Weekend Expenses

1) Ask friends or relatives if they know anyone - their friends, their relatives, whatever - who lives nearby and would be willing to put you up for a night. 2) Couchsurfing. -
I got it too, but my status is still "pending" so I doubt it has anything to do with whether we're accepted or not.

Yes! It's not my main interest but it's a side interest, along with forced migration in general. I'm reading Hitler's Foreign Workers for the comparative perspective, though, as I'm not a Europeanist at all.

It feels like late April/early May where I am...which means 50 degrees and the snow is melting. It's pretty great.

Nice! Just curious, but what does the Ivy pile refer to precisely?

Upgrading to OSX Lion while waiting for decisions...yay or nay?

I took the plunge and love it! Thanks for the advice everyone! -
I've heard the same thing - I also think a lot of the 800s on the results board are quant scores from people in the sciences and related fields. The math on the GRE is so easy that a super high quant score is pretty much required for those programs.

Congrats to the Hawaii acceptance (and with funding!!)!!!!

Yep, I paid my February rent today! It's almost here. I can't say I'm super excited, though...more like dreading having to stop pretending that I'll get in to some of these schools and face the rejections

Would also love to know about the UCLA acceptance!

When does Penn typically send out invites for their interview day? Seems like it must be relatively early given that it was during the last week of February last year, right?
-
That sounds like exactly what I need right now. I took a couple of beginning lessons in Sharm el Sheikh a few years back and it was awesome.

Well, one of my recommenders ran into some of her colleagues at one of the schools I'm applying to (school X) and they were talking about my application. Apparently one of them asked if school X was my top choice (which it absolutely is), and my recommender reassured them that is was. Ugh. Super vague, right?

Upgrading to OSX Lion while waiting for decisions...yay or nay?

Thanks for the info everyone - I really appreciate it! I have 4 GB of RAM, and I'm hoping to keep this laptop for at least the first couple years of grad school (maybe supplementing it with an iPad, though). If I install it and hate it, it's possible to revert back to Snow Leopard, right? -
Hahaha yeahhh I remember that little debate. Good times. If only I lived somewhere that wasn't 1) landlocked and 2) bitterly cold all the time.

Anyone have any new hobbies/stress relief tactics to suggest? I tried my usual ballet class last night and somehow the teacher reminding us that "swimsuit season is coming up!!" was ineffective in terms of lowering my stress level.
