Whoever wrote the #sorrynotsorry hashtag in reference to the Brown rejection on the board made my day.
-
This kind of malarkey happens to me on the daily.

Jhefflol, I just noticed where you are from. You must work with Susan Carlisle! She's brilliant. Apologies for highjacking the thread. Would love to chat with you over PM.

I almost applied there to appease my SO too. Had I of applied, I would have also been rejected. It seems they take very few people in and, those they take, need to be trilingual.

Round Two Preparation
lazaria replied to Pol4ris's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I made a similar list last night. The two that I am most convinced will be helpful in my next round is improving my GRE Subject score and networking with POIs. What you described about the GRE Lit is exactly what happened to me. I studied for hours every day and took practice tests almost every weekend. But, the test was nothing like the practice tests at all. Not even close. Does ETS (or someone else?) offer any tutoring for that horrid test? In truth, part of my issues with the GRE are because it was the first standardized test I had ever taken in my life. I transferred from a CC to my uni for undergrad and I wasn't really in school as a child. The strategy behind standardized tests is brand new to me. -
I had a similar reaction. It made me feel slightly less daunted by our programs' avg. numbers.

Dear Digital Humanists...

I couldn't agree with you more. FWIW, to all, there's a lot going on in DH on Twitter. If anyone wants to connect on there, send me a PM. -

Hello there! I would *love* to go to DHSI this year, but I am afraid I will need to wait a year. Are you going? -

This is an excellent idea, hypervodka. Anything to add more transparency to this process is a great contribution. -

Thanks, everyone! I am out of upvotes, but I would give them if I could. I will post the spreadsheet once it's done. Please feel free to add to it! -

Thanks, all! It's lovely to connect with others doing work in the field. I think am going to make a spreadsheet of DH programs, centers, specialities, etc. and include your suggestions. I've not come across a comprehensive list online. If you know of one, feel free to pass it on. -
Impending Rejections?
lazaria replied to youngcharlie101's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
It is so much hell! Keep your chin up and stay positive. I like to go ahead and believe that schools who have admitted many others will reject me because it makes the blow hurt less. To each her own, though. I've assuaged some anxiety by applying for teaching jobs, which, as I'm sure you know, you can do with an MA. Good luck to you! -
I'm so sorry to hear this. Know that you are in good company and that a journal rejection + not getting into some PhD programs does not mean anything about you personally (as others have eloquently stated on this thread before me). If it's any consolation, I was bemoaning my less-than-awesome season to a friend of mine who is a TT professor in a different field. He told me to appreciate it for the strength it will build in me because, in academe, there's a lot of rejection, and it happens fairly often to everybody. He said the everyone is frequently being denied grants, fellowships, publications, jobs, etc. etc. He said you just learn to keep marketing yourself and enjoy the ride. And, the quicker you get that thick skin, the easier it will be on you. TBH, I have had some existential questions of my own during this season. I decided to shelve an old research project and found a new one that gave me some inspiration and momentum. It's helped me feel like I've got a path, even if that path, right now, does not include a Ph.D. program. Also, this article is excellent: http://chronicle.com/article/Traits-of-the-Get-It-Done/133291/

Thank you for sharing this! I've yet to net an acceptance but I am continuing work in my field and it's been very inspiring for me. So, your story resonated with me. If I end up having to reapply next season, I think I will be better acquainted with my field and have a more sophisticated application.

You guys. Never in my life have I kept a spam folder this empty.

Ouch! Similarly, every time I log in to view my UC Santa Cruz admissions status, my heart leaps into my throat as I skim "UC Santa Cruz has received your application for admission!" It's the exclamation point that really sends me. You'd think by now I would have that part memorized and not be continuously fooled into thinking the sentence was good news.

I agree with all of the above. I like to call it pessimistic resiliency.

I'm guessing from your location that you might be there as well? TBH, I've heard a lot of great things about ASU of late. I didn't apply there this round, but probably should have. Thanks! -
One of my primary research interests is DH (specifically data mining, data visualization, topic modeling). Though I have applied to several schools this season, I've yet to net one offer. So, I am in the preliminary stages of compiling a list of schools with strong DH resources if I find myself applying again next year. So, I'd like to connect with other DHers on here. This is both for my own personal research purposes (What schools are you at? What schools should I apply to next year?) and for networking purposes. I've got a handful of DH projects going at the moment and would love to discuss or virtually collaborate with others who have similar interests.

Anyone expecting news from Davis but notice that the application site is down?

This is good news.

While we're on the topic, anyone know what's up with UCSB? They seemed to have admitted a few and then there was silence.

It was me. It was a random website check. I haven't heard anything from the University via email or post.
