  1. I was just rejected from Austin. Part of me is relieved that I don't have to move to Texas. I think it's the part of me that is pretending my confidence is totally shattered. Good to know. I have also heard to wait until April 15th, when they are less busy. Also, what should I do if the dept. has sent me nothing? I have only gotten automated emails from the University. I suppose I can just contact the DGS independently. Texas A&M is a rad school. Congrats! Also, this is a bit confidence-restoring for me. I fear that I am on my way to a shut out. This is my first season.
  2. What is the etiquette for getting feedback from departments that reject you? Respectful emails, I assume. Anyone done this before and have any tips they can share?
  3. A comprehensive wiki with program deadlines could be a good contribution too, assuming one does not already exist. It could help draw attention to promising programs that are outside of US New's top 50.
  4. Interesting. Are there any other late deadlines out there? We may want to start a thread for others.
  5. I will take all of the hopeful news I can. Thank you!
  6. Hi, all. I was rejected at UMN. Implied rejection from UCI, UC Davis, and UCSB, but I am still holding out hope on that one. UCSB seems to be notifying in sparse waves.
  7. I'm so sorry. I have a feeling that I am in a similar boat.
  8. I am so sorry to hear that you have health-related stress to deal with during this *lovely* part of the application season, Jhefflol. Congrats on the good news!
  9. Wow. I had no idea. Thanks for sharing! This is such welcomed news. I have a conference this weekend and was preparing myself for the UTA notifications to come out around Valentine's Day. I am happy to wait until after the conference to cry into a pillow be completely mature and balanced about their decision, whatever it may be.
  10. Ah, I see! My research is on declining humanities and the narrative of the humanities crisis. Are you open to answering a few questions over a PM? I would love to get more information on BMC's decision to cut the grad program in English.
  11. Does anyone know much about BMC's English program? They hold a #59 spot with US News (rankings done in 2013), but I cannot find any evidence of a graduate program in English there. (What I do find, while not exactly "English," is quite compelling.) Did they once have an English M.A./Ph.D. and it was cut or is US News lumping their Classical/Art History graduate program in with English?
  12. Did you figure this out by comparing the scores you received with what your schools received?
  13. YES. That movie is pure excellence. Regarding the GRE woes, if we have to reapply next year, it might be worth starting a virtual study group of sorts. I think it will be depressing enough to have revisit the application process again, let alone dish out hundreds of dollars to ETS for a test many of us have taken more than once. I know I could use the motivation and morale for that test. My scores are not awful, but they are lower than most of those who have been admitted thus far.
  14. I was thinking the same thing. Good luck to everyone!
  15. I am in full agreement with you. ETS is also awful to deal with on several levels.
  16. I had a similar response last night when I got my rejection from UMN. I put so much into all of my applications this year that it's exhausting to even try to conceptualize what I could do differently more next year.
  17. I've also only heard back from one school (UMN. Rejection. I saw it coming after the big batch of acceptances the first week of Feb.) Trying to keep busy with research projects and conferences. I'm with you in solidarity! Congrats! ^^ Yes this all of this. My GRE scores are one of the weaknesses in my application.
  18. Hello, all. Congrats to those who have had good news thus far! I'm an occasional poster but have not spent much time on here as I could have. Came to the board today to see how everyone else was faring so far. I've applied to 9 schools and heard nothing back yet, either way. I grow more impatient by the day. I cannot tell you how comforting it is to see that I am not alone. Anyone got any tips for waiting this season out? How are you doing it?
  19. Hello, everyone! I have been a long time lurker and occasional poster. Figured I should finally just introduce myself and congratulate those who have heard positive news thus far!
  20. Does anyone know if a Dec. GRE General score going to reach a dept. with Dec. deadlines?
  21. Thanks so much, hj2012. Mind if I pm you?
  22. Thank you, hj2012! Great point about needing to articulate the reason a WGS program is more fitting than an English dept. Can you recommend a couple of good books or resources about methodological practices in WGSS? I have a sense that I would be happier studying literature as merely a cultural response to broader feminist issues in women's history, rather than the primary focus of my research. Ortega, great question. I am literally weeks away from completing my MA and I have only English classes on both my UG and G transcripts. Some of those involve dealing in great depth with feminist philosophy and contemporary gender issues, however, they are under the umbrella of literary study. I've noticed that there are some postbacc and graduate certificates in WGSS and, since I'd be applying to enter a PhD in fall of 2015, I wonder if completing one of these first is a good idea. My current uni only has UG classes in WGSS and does not offer a certificate or anything I could stick around to work on.
  23. Hi, all. I have a slightly OT question. I'm nearly finished with my MA in English. My research interests revolve around the long 18th-century and feminist theory. While I love literature, I feel a deeper affinity with feminist philosophy and activism. With a BA and an MA in literature, would I even stand a chance in the application season? I have an excellent GPA for both undergrad and grad as well as a full CV, including national conferences and a publication. (Granted, these are all in the field of literary study.) Give it to me straight. How realistic is it to switch to WGS at this point in the game? My apologies for the OT post. Thanks, in advance, for your insight!
