  1. That spreadsheet was compiled by other spreadsheets people have gotten from their own school, fpa etc. They are not connected to who has posted in the forum.
  2. past fulbrighters. Also Korean ETAs are paid 1,300,000 won p/month according to the korean fulbright website.
  3. http://catalog.cies.org/ This is the catalog of awards for Fulbright SCHOLARS (e.g. people like 1CrazyLady who are professors - specifically professors and professionals who are going abroad to lecture at a another university or do research, NOT full research grant grantees or ETAs). Since we are not, you know, doing stuff like lecturing/lawyering/doing business that we could be doing at our own universities/law firms/businesses for several thousands more $$$, I would guess the stipends for full/ETA grants are probably between about 1/3 and 1/2 of the amounts listed for the scholars. I believe Fulbright bases all its grants on the actual cost of living in the country (probably the country as a whole, not the most expensive city in it) and does not award a base amount to scholars across the board. Please note that I have pretty much no basis for saying 1/3 to 1/2, except that I compared them to the past grant amounts given to Germany and Taiwain ETAs and they seem to match up fairly well. p.s. I was debating whether or not to post this because it might freak some people out or give them too high of an expectation. PLEASE don't take this as the gospel truth!
  4. I thought this was a nice story about a Fulbright grantee post-fulbright, a 50 year old high school drop out from Queens who went to Ireland to learn Gaeilge. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens-sanitation-worker-ed-shevlin-honored-irish-man-year-york-city-council-article-1.1037704?localLinksEnabled=false
  5. hahah I saw that too, good to know i'm not weird for having a bookmark to the "fulbright" feed on twitter...
  6. Nice job! Busti - maybe your boyfriend could do a short ESL teaching stint or something if you get the grant?
  7. People are guessing that notifications will come from the IIE by email, you will get a notification by email or hard copy from your respective country's fulbright commission depending on what they decide to do. check the spreadsheet to see what they have done in the past.
  8. Did you apply for a specialist grant? I think those go out first because they are processed on a rolling basis, not all at once like ETA and full grants so I wouldn't worry too much! (unless you applied for a specialist grant).
  9. it looks like specialist awards are being awarded just to give you some hope! http://lsc.wisc.edu/...ia-this-summer/
  10. well, if I remember correctly, CrazyLady applied to a specific 3 month grant at the University of Durham. There is only one. Guessing it has no impact on when full grant and eta grant people get a notification.
  11. I know, I have been considering emailing my area coordinator to see if I can change my address to my real one (I'm on the east coast and my parents are in the midwest) just so I can be the one to make the call instead of having to hear from my parents. Not really sure if I want my roommates to see the big or small envelope either though...
  12. That's great! I'm happy to help - there's a lot of internet baggage out there about fulbright and it's so hard to keep track of it all and what is or isn't current. when I was applying I was terrified I was going to miss something and have my app automatically rejected or something. Indonesia applicants haven't heard back yet and I don't think we'll hear back until april, unfortunately. The infamous Indonesian "Jam Karet" (rubber time) is in probably in full effect down there! EDIT: Awesome job T Pain!
  13. Not sure how we will be notified, but the applications for the Fulbright DIKTI program (for Indonesians to do their master's in the US) are due april 15, so I would guess that they would try to get the notifications out before then since they will have to start the evaluation process on the new apps.
  14. I kind of remember someone mentioning that the reason the Turkey people found out so late last year was because of funding issues particular to that year, so I wouldn't count on finding out that late this year. I dont think it's unreasonable to go to costa rica- I second giving the Fulbright people a heads up about your whereabouts and maybe making an appointment w your doctor for a physical for a date soon after your return, just in case? Can't hurt to have a physical already scheduled for the year anyway right? Apologies for typos, on my iPad.
  15. I'm sure your spouse will thank you for doing the legwork for him or her if you do get the fulbright! What employment options were you thinking of? I don't have any dependents but I thought maybe my boyfriend might be able to join me for a few months working in the ESL industry. Turns out it is a little harder than I thought since he is German and the opportunities for non-native English speakers (although his english is really very good) are kind of sparse a.k.a. getting a working visa would be really hard. Even though I don't know if I'll get it, it's good to know those kinds of things before hand. Plus, think of it this way: if you're that committed to/interested in the region that you went through the Fulbright application process, it's not out of left field that you may someday end up doing a stint there even if you do not receive the Fulbright. In that case, it'll be good to have already done that research into visas, work opportunities etc.
  16. Cliana, I believe you might be in luck, as it seems this year ONLY ETAs for the South and Central Asia region are attending the pre-departure orientation. http://us.fulbrightonline.org/info_recommended_candidates.html I wish I could have applied for the CLS! unfortunately I didn't know about it while I was still at university. :/ Kind of a bummer that the CLE which Fulbright offers for Indonesian is only for full grantees and not ETAs too.
  17. I would try priority mail international, which should have tracking. If you're not allowed to use priority you could mail it International Registered First Class, but you just get delivery confirmation, not tracking.
  18. Also, once you have accessed a doc, I'm pretty sure it is saved in your google docs file. Just log into your google account/gmail account and click the "Documents" link on the upper left-hand side of the screen and it should show up in your list of documents. @badgersip, I also got the same advice from my FPA which was a big fat "DO NOT BOTHER THEM" and that they will not confirm the receipt of any transcripts and stuff unless they are feeling really nice that day. Supposedly they will contact with you if they need something, but this is just the start of the crazy season for them. I'm planning on just mailing everything registered/certified/with some kind of tracking from now on to assuage my (totally rational) fear that something got lost in the mail. Also someone asked what the FPA's do now that everyone who was recommended has been notified? I was under the impression that they start advising the people who are applying for next year since that application just opened.
  19. Doesn't the Malaysia ETA only start in January 2013? Fingers crossed you get both, but what are you planning to do in your downtime until January? That seems like sooooo long!
  20. I sent mine certified mail so I could track it myself - but apparently they do call you if they haven't received a transcript from you.
  21. I'd be interested to know that too, since I need to be out of the country for my cousin's wedding. I think they probably would? Someone at my school was travelling to the pre-departure orientation from outside of the country and they reimbursed her, but since her flight was over $1,000 or something I think she had to book it herself first. Fulbright can't really expect you to put your plans on hold for the entire summer when you might only find out in June or something right?
  22. Because the money you're provided is from a federal grant, any travel you do is subject to the Fly America Act. Basically this means two thing: You must fly into and out of the United States on U.S.-flag carriers. However, a foreign carrier may be used for travel between two points abroad if no US flag carrier flies there (for example, I don't think any U.S. flag carrier flies between Malaysia and Indonesia) A code-share flight qualifies as U.S. flag air service provided the ticket identifies the U.S. carrier’s code and flight number. For example, American Airlines does not operate any flights between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, but it has a codeshare with Cathay which does. The easiest way to find a flight with a codeshare is to search directly on the website of a U.S flag airline. Unfortunately, they are often more expensive as sometimes the only reason a U.S. airline has a codeshare is to capture the captive market of people who must book codeshare flights (i.e. people funded by the government) This is the fulbright orientation guide from 2011 with a summary of the Fly America Act starting on page 6: https://us.fulbright...on_Handbook.pdf Here is a list of U.S. Flag Carriers: http://www.ctlr.msu....CarriersUS.aspx There are some exceptions to the rule, like if using a U.S. carrier makes your flight ridiculously long. For example, I think I could theoretically fly from K.L, Malaysia. to Jakarta, Indonesia using a U.S. flag codeshare, but I would have to layover in Hong Kong and the flight would take like 8 hours longer. In that case, I would be allowed to book a non-U.S. carrier for my flight. I have heard from some people that you must book a flight through a certain travel agency for it to be approved by the IIE, so I would definitely wait to hear from Cara Doble. Germany is a large program so I would guess they would require you to do that. I believe it is dependent on the country whether you receive a stipend (money in advance) or a reimbursement (money after up to a certain amount) as I have heard of both.
  23. check the spreadsheets: 2011-2012: https://docs.google....=CNHpkd4P#gid=8 2010-2011: https://docs.google....ZiSGRoWUE#gid=0
  24. Do you have an FPA? I graduated from college two years ago and my FPA is still really hands on - I would recommend asking him or her to review it (in english obvi). They go to conferences and attend meetings and receive bulletins and tips about all sorts of things to do with fulbright so that they can better coach their applicants on how to gain the grant.
