  1. Georgia Tech has very strong Machine Learning presence: http://ml.cc.gatech.edu/ Particularly in NLP, a rockstar would be Jacob Eisenstein: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~jeisenst/
  2. Lots of hits for CMU ML here: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=machine+learning+%28CMU%7Ccarnegie*%29 Good luck!
  3. The slides from the ML course at CMU from Alex Smola last semester are really nice: http://alex.smola.org/teaching/cmu2013-10-701x/ They also post the video lectures and assignments w/ solutions and all. Good luck!
  4. I am finishing up my MS in CS at a top school in the US following a 3-year Bachelor degree in Computer Science outside of the US. How are you so sure that you cannot apply yourself to the US?
  5. Anybody applying to CMU Computer Science Ph.D (not ML, LTI, RI) received a rejection letter yet? Somebody just reported a rejection by e-mail saying that there were more than 660 applicants, but I've not received neither an acceptance nor a rejection. I'm curious as to what is CMU CS's current decision-sending status.
  6. Unless it is very related to the area of research you are working in and plan to pursue a Ph.D in, dropping it will go unnoticed.
  7. For folks following up on CMU admission decisions: Do you think that the decisions reported on the results survey are ONLY for Machine Learning (MLD), Robotics (RI), and Language Technologies (LTI)? I am wondering because I applied to the Computer Science PhD program (none of the 3 above), and am not sure whether people reporting results are reporting for this same program or for the 3 above. Any thoughts?
  8. Looks like Carnegie Mellon started rolling out their Robotics Ph.D decisions. Their CS/ML decisions should be out by next week I assume. I'm waiting on Carnegie Mellon, Stanford and Cornell. Good luck everyone!
  9. Hi all, I am confused as to when the application system sends out request for recommendation letters to the references. Two possibilities I can think of: 1- AFTER THE FULL APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED: meaning that providing the references' information is not enough, the whole app has to be submitted. 2- AS SOON AS I PROVIDE REFERENCE CONTACT DETAILS: even before I have submitted the application, the references are notified by the system. I could not find that kind of information on the websites or FAQs of the schools I'm applying to. In your experience and knowledge, which of the two really happens? I need this information so that I can time my application submission wisely. Thanks!
  10. 1- In my experience, it is definitely possible starting your SECOND SEMESTER. If you enter with a strong motivation and talk to a few faculty of interest to your area, and start working with them on some project (without funding), it is very possible that you get funded for the rest of your masters if you prove yourself worthy. My experience is from a top 10 CS School. 2- No idea Good luck!
  11. Thanks for your reply! This is a terminal Masters but I'm taking the thesis option (main goal for this coming year).
  12. From personal experience, many GaTech MS students get funding as research assistants either doing CS research with professors of interest, or working as developers in other departments on campus e.g web or GIS developers for civil engineering and transportation. The trick is having a solid profile and picking the right professors and getting to know them personally early on. Good luck
  13. Hello everyone, I am currently a Masters' student at a top 10 CS school in the US. I still have one year to go (Fall 13/14 + Spring 14), and I plan to go for PhD in Fall 14/15. As such, I am applying around this December/January for PhD programs. My question is: Will my current professors be supportive (in recommendation letters for example) in case I am to apply to different schools, in addition to my current one? I know this depends on me and my professors, but I'd like to know if anyone has been in that phase before. One thing to add is that my current adviser and I are publishing in a top journal soon, and are academically very cohesive. I am also funded by them, working as a research assistant. I do not want to stir any negative reactions, etc. What do you think? Thanks!
