  1. There is a LOT!

Go to a game at Fenway or do a tour of the park if you like baseball

The Boston Public Library is amazing

Boston Common and the Public Garden

    Castle Island

I personally love the Aquarium and the waterfront is right there too

Sorry I don't know much about things to do in Cambridge first hand, but I hear good things about Mt. Auburn Cemetery, and there are museums at both Harvard and MIT.

Thanks! I will definitely add some of these to my list :)

  2. Hello, hello!

I'm moving to Cambridge early so I have time to adjust to my new environment  :)

I know once I begin my program, I won't really have that much time to explore without any stress!

Any suggestions on what I should do/see/visit during the summer before I begin?

(So far, I have the Freedom Trail and the Museum of Fine Arts on my list.)

    Any suggestions will be welcomed!

  3. It is really annoying that Chicago won't just send out rejections to people who already have Master's degrees and are qualified but just not "good enough" for Chicago -- if you know we're not interested in MAPSS why not just say, hey! we're just not interested in you!? leave it at that! I find it very disrespectful. I think it has a lot to do with the aura of superiority cultivated in academia. Anyway, I'm ranting. Is anyone else going to UCLA? :-)

I'm visiting UCLA! PMing you  :P

  4. I hope so. My advisor thought it was. But I don't want to get over excited when it could just be that everyone who didn't send official transcripts got the email.

Did you send official transcripts in?

I think I only uploaded the BA & MA transcripts as PDFs. So I think your advisor is right!

  5. Sharalaxp - that was me on UVA. I got the email because they didn't have my official transcripts. Asked if I could send scanned copies as the committee was meeting tomorrow. I doubt that means short list but then again why bother if I didn't have a shot.

Yes, that certainly does sound like a good sign! I applied to UVA as well, but haven't heard anything from them.. ;(

  6. Just got an unconditional acceptance for an MSc at London School of Economics! I didn't get any GSS funding though, which is disappointing. Still in the running for scholarships, so fingers crossed!! I love this program, but I won't be able to accept without funding. Still, nice to have the first response be a positive one!

Congratulations! Hope the funding situation works out :)

  7. Hey guys,

I also wanted to join in to say I applied to Tulane! I am in the socio-cultural camp, interested in nationalism/media/capitalism studies. I already submitted the application, but I guess we won't be finding out anytime soon considering the due date is Feb. 1?

I can't wait for this application season to be over!

  8. If you go back to your original Columbia application (https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=col-gas), there should be a new link in that application homepage....

The link on mine says: "Decision Status: Available beginning 3/15/2012.....Your application decision is now available."

If this link doesn't show up on your application homepage, I guess the decision hasn't been made for your application.

Hope this is helpful to some people.

  9. Just FYI, I got my official reply from Columbia, March 15th (via email, which links you back to the application website).

I wasn't accepted to the PhD, but accepted into the MA with no funding. You should check the application website (there should be a new link to find out your official results.)

  10. it's already march! anyone still waiting to hear the final (probably rejection) word from stanford, berkeley, or columbia? i really wonder what's taking so long to give out these rejection emails..... i can't imagine it taking that long to click the "send rejection email" button....put me out of my misery!

on another note- anyone know if columbia gives any funding to those that are bumped down to a masters offer?

  11. hey there,

i have gotten a string of disappointing news for my cultural anthropology phd applications.

today, i got a full-tuition masters offer from university of chicago (instead of being admitted to the phd program)... this definitely doesn't cover living costs for the year that i will be spending studying, but my parents are so desperate for my situation that they'll probably cover that for me...ha.

anyways, i am still painfully waiting to hear back from 3 more schools (but from what i have seen on this forum, i should have heard a long time ago if i was accepted, so i'm going to rule those schools out mentally..for now).

BACK TO MY MAIN POINT (sorry for the long intro),

is there anyone who is in a similar boat here?
