  1. Don't forget to thoroughly check out the OC Transpo site when you're thinking about flats: Ottawa's system of bus expressways (and the O-train!) mean much faster bus commutes than in most cities. And our transit pass is a mandatory part of our fees. While not as much fun as living in Centretown, it might be cheaper/less grotty living a bit further out, but on an express route, for instance. (I plan on walking to an Otrain stop and taking it one stop to Carleton--when the snow isn't too deep, that is!)
  2. I'm currently finishing up macro ( all done micro, yay!) as pre-reqs for an MA (starting Fall 2012), and doing it online. I hadn't taken Econ before I applied, although I knew I would need it to register; my acceptance was conditional on my doing so. I would recommend contacting the admissions departments of schools you are interested in (or checking their websites); many of them will give you a list of acceptable online schools/courses. That way you can be sure that their course credits match up appropriately on your transcript. You're wise to start before you apply: I didn't, and am cramming a year's worth of Econ into three months. Good luck!
  3. I think the "research appropriateness" of your language is only an issue if you are trying to choose one of the non-standard languages, e.g. Finnish, etc. If you just want French, German, Russian and the like, you're in the clear, assuming you pass the online second language test. (B.C. French Immersion, don't fail me now!) An aside: any thoughts on your (collective your)preferred degree streams--coursework, research essay, thesis? It's great that this thread is finally seeing some action--let's keep it going!
  4. Count me in--I'll be in the Intel/Nat'l Security cluster (assuming I finish up my Macro prereq. in time!) I'm moving to Ottawa from TO in July, and it sounds like we're going to have a fun mix of people and classes. Are you guys taking French, or another language, for your requirement? I'm hoping for Russian.
  5. I'm 33, but I've got two kids, pets and a mortgage, and I've been out of school and at home for 7 years, so this thread resonates. I got into the only program I applied to but I have replaced the anxiousness of waiting for my admit with fretting about how I'm going to make everything work. I'm moving cities before September, so sorting out schools, childcare, housing etc. is now freaking me out--not to mention "grad school impostor syndrome" has hit big time! It's making it hard to focus on my work (I'm completing prerequisites by online study, which I loathe.) So keep the posts coming--it is great knowing I'm not the only crazy one!
  6. Not now that you have summoned doom upon us! No way am I risking it. And wait--you have your own advisor already? As in, someone you're already in contact with about research?
  7. I just emailed to ask about funding, but do you know if that's in addition to a tuition waiver, or just a 5,000$ discount? Anyone else slightly worried about MA debt in face of massive fed. civil service cuts?
  8. Just got the email... I'm in! So I hope whoever turned it down enjoys Fiji (or, I'm assuming, their dream school somewhere else!) Hold fast, fellow waitlister; your time is soon, too. I guess this means I have to finish micro and macro much, much faster than I've been working thus far. Not a bad kind of motivation, though
  9. Keep the faith! I have decided to imagine many already-accepted applicants suddenly meeting the person of their dreams, being swept off their feet, winning the lottery, and ending up happily ever after.. in Fiji! Just teasing--eventually accepted or not, we're in good company for a competitive program, which is a definite bright side. I can't help but be happy for everyone who has gotten in--should make for a great cohort.
  10. Waitlist limbo for me! NPSIA is my only application, so I think I'm going to have "refresh finger carpal tunnel" by the end of this season. Heck, by the end of this week!
  11. Thanks for the hope! I will cross my fingers. Intel/NatSec was my first choice, too--congratulations again.
  12. Congrats! Could I ask which cluster you applied for? I'd like to pretend to hold out hope by thinking that they're releasing notification by cluster/research area...
  13. NPSIA's website has them starting to look at apps after March 15th, oddly enough. I hope they're lying, just to keep us off their backs! The actual PoliSci department at Carleton has PhD results out already, though.
  14. You can have my place at NPSIA, hah hah--since I just found three glaring errors in my personal statement. My only app, too. Oh well. Please do post what they say if you contact them, though--it's too bad that Guelph is being so inflexible! I don't think you would be in the wrong to accept Guelph, with the intention of accepting another offer down the line; they are forcing your hand a bit. (Then again, if they want you, they should be willing to wait a bit.)
