  1. Me too -- I'm looking into DrPH programs that focus on community violence prevention, but I want to also work with trauma epidemiology and violence mapping. PM me if you'd like to share DrPH info. Best wishes as you apply!
  2. Did we ever end up making a spreadsheet to document the grant award amounts for transparency's sake? I was just informed of the grant award amount to the country I applied to and wonder if we're contributing this information somewhere. Hope everyone is well.
  3. Best of luck reapplying. This was my second application round and it worked out for me. Cyclone88 has already started Get your geek on!
  4. Hi! I wanted to give a piece of advice while this thread is in its infancy. I am an at-large candidate who ultimately received a Fulbright to the Kyrgyz Republic for 2012-2013. In last year's thread, we amassed an ENORMOUS body of information about application procedures, tips, mistakes, etc. Unfortunately NONE of it is easily searchable or useful to this coming year's crop of applicants, unless you want to pick through hundreds of forum pages and thousands and thousands of posts mostly containing people chatting and obsessing and sharing dorky memes that we created about the process. I think it would be a REALLY REALLY good idea to move the Fulbright thread off of GradCafe and create a Wiki similar to what these returned Peace Corps volunteers have done. That way the information would be easier to find, somewhat organized, and would carry over to the next year. It would make the process a little more transparent as well, and there could still be a forum for general obsessing and paranoid hypothesizing and tip-sharing. Obviously I am not offering to create or manage this Wiki, so feel free to ignore me and use GradCafe again this year. I wanted to mention this to the 2013-2014 applicants early on because there were SO MANY times this past year that I wished we had a Wiki to pin the information we uncovered through countless -- seriously countless -- hours of work. Best wishes to you all!
  5. Congrats to those accepted to Caribbean countries today, and I REALLY HOPE alternates are promoted to principal soon. Surely with grad school deadlines etc. some people gave up waiting and accepted other things in the meantime. Fingers crossed for y'all!
  6. If so, please pm ALL BOTH OF US! I am so curious about the projects people proposed. Edit to strike-out: Well, I'll let tokyotokyoto speak for her/himself, haha.
  7. SUPERCONGRATULATIONS PDX503! I'm really happy for you! Just FYI, I got my letter from the FFSB a few days ago, and it is literally one page reiterating the "Congrats!" of the email. Your acceptance email should link to the medical review and consent form, which you have a month to complete. Other than that, I have no idea when we're going to sign contracts, set up EFT, etc.
  8. Best wishes to everyone still waiting. I hope you hear really really really soon!
  9. If you pass your medical review now, but then deteriorating health conditions make you unable to leave for your grant period, there is nothing anyone can do to fault you for it. Mental health IS health! You wouldn't be declining the award, but you would be categorizing yourself as ineligible due to a health condition that arose. If you've already booked your travel before you decide to decline, I'd guess you'd have to work out with the airline how to cancel the ticket and I would also guess that Fulbright wouldn't refund you any amount that you lose from cancelling the ticket. (I don't know for sure.) Have you thought about asking Fulbright to push back your grant period? I know some people have succeeded in beginning their grants several months late, say in January instead of September. It sounds like you know what you need to get better, and that's really commendable. It's hard to be away from a support system and in a foreign country, especially while fighting depression. I hope you're healthy enough to leave in September. Best wishes!
  10. Nope, Central Asia recommendeds received our emails at about 4:30 pm.
  11. I got the full grant to Kyrgyzstan. My heart is beating so fast. There is a tiny pocket of joy in Cubicle-land today. I literally cannot believe it. I keep checking the email to make sure it's real. (Thanks to whomever updates the spreadsheet -- I'm KyrgyzRepublicApplicant.)
  12. Have you seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yERw6aGDTyw? I feel convinced that somebody waiting anxiously for a Fulbright came up with scenarios like yours and then made a YouTube video out of one of them.
  13. I'm sorry to hear that, Turkey candidates. I hoped y'all would hear sooner this year. Edit to add: sorry for you, too, Greece candidates.
  14. Central Asia-ites! I caved and called Pam Jennings (needed to know if I should request an extension from some other thing that I need to decide on). Fulbright has received all the final permissions etc. and they're finalizing the budget. As a result we can expect to hear in the next couple of days. Whew. It's a scary prospect. I'd almost rather stay in this liminal space wherein I have many alternate futures looming ahead of me rather than having to choose one -- but not really!
  15. I am! I have a Thursday deadline for another award so I'll be obsessively refreshing until then. I feel like all my sentences have been beginning with, "If I get the Fulbright, then ..." -- or ending with "inshallah." I'm also trying to decide on whether to apply again for the next round if I am not awarded a grant this time. I recently realized I began working on this application in March 2011, so it's been over a year of work and waiting. Wow!
  16. Haha, I forgot that's happening about now. Ahh, the joys of graduating two years ago... Maybe it'd just be something we should tell next year's crop of applicants as soon as they start their GradCafe thread, and they can just populate a Wiki as they go along (if they're interested). Best wishes to everyone on their finals! And I hope you/we hear good Fulbright news soon.
  17. Thanks, this is useful to hear! We really need a Wiki to organize all the information we've learned so that next year's crop of applicants don't have to weed through our 3,000 posts. I would have loved to have known all this information during the application process. Peace Corps peeps made one -- anyone on here want to take that on? I am not tech-savvy enough personally.
  18. Personal anecdote: Last year, a friend of mine finished her Master's and was awarded a full grant to Ukraine. She turned it down to live locally and work at a small non-profit. Her reasons were interesting (not my business to list them here, but they had nothing to do with grad school, other fellowships, etc.). So I don't think alternates should give up hope! It must be a difficult position to be in, but I believe that quite a few people will be promoted, and some already have (despite only half-ish of the grant notifications going out, and not even having reached a single deadline for principal candidates to accept / decline). Best wishes to all.
  19. ETA: Whoops, just saw the New Zealand awardees -- congrats to everyone!
  20. Question: If Bangladesh is part of the Central Asia regional grant (including Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and theoretically Uzbekistan), why would Bangladesh find out before the other countries in the region? It happened last year too. I'm not complaining, just curious. Congrats to everyone chosen or still in the running (alternates) for awards, and condolences for those who were not chosen this time.
  21. I was informed last week that the country I had applied to had recommended candidates for receipt, also, but that "the final decision will be done by the IIE in Washington." Does IIE whittle down candidates even after the host country picks? Or do they weed people out with background checks between notifying us? Or maybe because I'm part of a regional grant, they have to figure out how many grants go to each country?... I am a little confused about it all. Oh well, I guess we'll hear soon enough. Congrats, ETAs to Taiwan!
  22. Hi BMCGirl10, where / how did you hear this? I had emailed the US Embassy in Uzbekistan last year when I was considering applying there, but they told me Uzbekistan has not allowed anyone in on a Fulbright in something like 5 years, so I didn't apply there. Did you apply there? Or were you in contact with someone about the Central Asia regional grant? Sorry to be nosy, but I'm waiting to hear from Kyrgyzstan and am curious. Thanks, and best of luck! Edit: I see lots of people on here to congratulate! Even if you were not offered a spot in the end, you got really far in the process, and I hope everyone leaves this competition feeling proud of our proposals and having learned a lot from the process. Best wishes to those of you (us) still waiting!
  23. I have a question about how all this works. Someone please set me straight! 1. IIE in Washington reviews all submissions. 2. IIE in Washington recommends finalists. 3. IIE sends recommended candidates to Embassies around the world. 4. Embassies pick who they want. 5. Embassies send back to IIE in Washington. At this point, what does IIE do? Do they still weed through / reject based on funding? Once the Embassy decides, is it just a matter of IIE processing the paperwork / offer / etc. before they offer a grant? Or is there more to it? What about regional grants? The country I applied to is part of a regional allotment of grants. Does that mean that IIE takes the picks from the countries in the region and makes a final cut? Or do countries know how many spots they're allotted before they choose who to send back to IIE? Just curious. If anyone knows the answers to these questions or if I've misunderstood the process, I'd love to hear what's really up.
  24. Hella congrats! Go get your map on!
