    Central Asia-ites!

I caved and called Pam Jennings (needed to know if I should request an extension from some other thing that I need to decide on).

Fulbright has received all the final permissions etc. and they're finalizing the budget. As a result we can expect to hear in the next couple of days.

Whew. It's a scary prospect. I'd almost rather stay in this liminal space wherein I have many alternate futures looming ahead of me rather than having to choose one -- but not really!

Have you seen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yERw6aGDTyw? I feel convinced that somebody waiting anxiously for a Fulbright came up with scenarios like yours and then made a YouTube video out of one of them.

I am! I have a Thursday deadline for another award so I'll be obsessively refreshing until then.

I feel like all my sentences have been beginning with, "If I get the Fulbright, then ..." -- or ending with "inshallah."

I'm also trying to decide on whether to apply again for the next round if I am not awarded a grant this time. I recently realized I began working on this application in March 2011, so it's been over a year of work and waiting. Wow!

Well, there are only two fulbright commissions in all of africa (there's jordan and israel in the MENA region, then there's egypt and morocco under the MENA umbrella as well). There are no fulbright commissions in all of subsaharan africa. This makes the approval of fulbrights a much more regional and collaborative process then in other parts of the world, and seems quite similar to central asia, which you will also see from the map has largely remained unnotified. That is probably what Jermaine is talking about when he mentions final budget approval, the budget approval by various countries in africa as to which countries get how many grants and what amount of money, etc.

Honestly, that seems symptomatic of the general western approach towards "AFRICA" as a continent and not a set of highly diverse countries. This kind of regional approach over almost 50 countries is not seen anywhere else on the globe (38 countries in the african continent without commissions), and probably results in budgets that end up stretched far too thinly.

I think that the reactions to our complete inability to alter the notifications timeline is amazing. What you don't know is that this forum is actually the source material for a study on what very bright people do when they have absolutely no control in a situation.

-define our various states of existence on a spreadsheet--- check
-send out emails that we already know the answers to--- check
-debate the fairness and probability of the timetable--- check
-try to will it into being with, "I read my tea leaves this morning, and I just KNOW it's going to happen tomorrow!!"--- check

But I think it's at a whole new level when an independently created spreadsheet of our complied data is turned into an independently created MAP of the world...which is color coded. I think I may love you all. You are my people- or if you aren't, I sure wish you were. P.S. long time lurker, first time poster- Still waiting for status (Trinidad and Tobago). Hope everyone has a great weekend.

I firmly expect someone to post a link to a song and/or youtube rant regarding this process if we don't hear by next week.

Made a map from the spreadsheet

    Green - Notified

    Red - Not notified

Information on countries without notification may be skewed as there appears to be more notification on the thread principals and less from those who are rejected.

Has the entire continent of Africa not received any notifications?

I have good information that the IEE is in direct talks with none other than Oprah Winfrey. I believe the talks are culminating into a statement that should end up with something like the following:

Alternate to Ukraine ETA.. CAN'T WAIT TO APPLY NEXT YEAR!! :0) I'm excited already... and I'm going to put together a killer application, so look out everyone! But it is rather strange that they have 3 alternates for 2 positions, isn't it?

Personal anecdote: Last year, a friend of mine finished her Master's and was awarded a full grant to Ukraine. She turned it down to live locally and work at a small non-profit. Her reasons were interesting (not my business to list them here, but they had nothing to do with grad school, other fellowships, etc.). So I don't think alternates should give up hope!

It must be a difficult position to be in, but I believe that quite a few people will be promoted, and some already have (despite only half-ish of the grant notifications going out, and not even having reached a single deadline for principal candidates to accept / decline). Best wishes to all.

Unfortunately staying on this thread is now a bit tortuous, so I'm gonna make my exit and return only if I am promoted to principle. I just want to thank everyone so much for their positive energy; this is such a supportive community, and it has been so wonderful to find a place where my constant whining about this process is understood. Congratulations to all who have been accepted, my condolences to those who have been rejected (you still made it so so far!) and to those who, like me, are stuck in alternate limbo: chin up! We're in this together! Sincerely,

    Pelevinfan

Seriously, this is how my last hour has gone!!

check email (no notification). refresh email just in case the notification came within the last 3 seconds (still no email). resign self to the fact that I should probably start working. resume working on IRB amendment. realize that 4 minutes have just past. think "maybe my notification came!" check email. still no notification. hit refresh. hit refresh again. still nothing. promise myself that I won't check my email for at least an hour. begin working on my prospectus. decide that 10 minutes of prospectus work is more than respectable. check this forum for 10 minutes to see who received notifications. feel anxious. begin rationalizing that 20 minutes is roughly 30% of an hour which is almost half an hour, and if I round up - that's a whole hour! check email (nothing). hit refresh (still nothing). *refresh* *refresh* *refresh* *refresh.* Start feeling angry with IIE, Fulbright, the FSB, and the Western Hemisphere as a whole. decide that this is irrational. check email. nothing. *refresh* *refresh* *refresh* *refresh.* decide that my anger is, indeed, actually rational. *refresh* *refresh* *refresh.* feel dejected.

Alternate for Italy, full research grant. Notified 4/6, fell off 10' ladder 4/7 (no joke). Not my best 24 hours...hoping for redemption in the form of a fulbright promotion!

Hey folks, I think Biz was just going off of what's currently listed in the spreadsheet, which you can access here:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuGpbWEh-3b0dHZzTU1BN0lNLU1yeG5XWktnY2k3bmc#gid=0

If you'd like your information added to the spreadsheet, you can send an e-mail to fulbright.12.13@gmail.com and it will get posted with the rest

We've just barely made it over the hump according to the spreadsheet... out of the 81 countries that are represented on the sheet, it looks like applicants to 41.5 (0.5 being Turkey full grants) countries have gotten responses so far.

Now we've just got... 39.5 left!

And just so you didn't think you were alone in your mind-numbing wait, here's the list of countries that are left:
Armenia, Bangladesh, Bosnia, Cambodia, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Estonia, Ghana, Hong Kong, Israel, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Mauritius, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Russia, Rwanda, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey (ETA), Ukraine, Venezuela.

We're almost there! A lot of people were told mid-April and that's only 4 days away!!!
