  1. I'm moving the opposite direction, WI to CA. I'm planning on selling all of my bigger stuff and buying new stuff once I get there. My books will be shipped by media mail. Then I'll play a game of tetrus and try to fit everything else into my car.
  2. MEB05

    UC Davis

I'm looking at renting a room in a house, which is significantly cheaper than a 1 br apartment. It's better for my dog too if it has a fenced in yard.

@caus, I'm in the same positiion and trying to rent from out of state. Have you seen http://daviswiki.org/? It can be helpful in narrowing down apartments. Also, there's lots of people looking for roommates on uloop.com, if you already have a ucd e-mail account setup. It can be tough figuring this stuff out from afar.
  4. Hey, Just wondering why the commute is set in stone. Isn't there a way to find a place that would be closer to campus at either of the places? I'm headed to UC Davis for the Molecular, Cellular and Integrative Physiology program. Which life sciences graduate group are you considering? Ultimately, I think I would go to the place that has the most labs that match your interests. While you will probably make more connections in the region of the country where you earn your PhD, I don't think it will limit your future career possibilities if you have a strong desire to move to another area of the country. Good luck with your decision!
  5. Congrats on the acceptances! I'm not sure about the comparative strength of the overall programs, but which school has the most labs you are interested in working in? From a location standpoint I would go with #4, but I'm probably biased. I don't think there is one that completely stands out as "the better choice", but there probably is one that is a better fit for you personally. Try to think of what factors are most important to you, and rank them based on that.
  6. One of the PIs who I have been in contact with suggested that I do one of my rotations with a collaborator of his. He mentioned that they are potentially looking to co-mentor a student so that the student could gain the advantage of being trained in the two approaches their labs take to the same area of research. It sounds like an interesting idea in that I would be able to learn a wider variety of techniques, and potentially have more publication opportunities. I haven't seen this in my experience, is it at all common, or at least not unheard of? Are there any big drawbacks I should consider?
  7. MEB05

    UC Davis

I'm thinking early September would be a good time to move out there. I have a 30 hour, probably 3 day, drive ahead of me.
  8. MEB05

    UC Davis

I'm going to live in Davis. I don't want to deal with the commute or parking.

    UC Davis

Who else is headed to UCD this fall? How far in advance of the start of the fall quarter are you planning on moving to Davis/Sacremento?
  10. What department at Marquette did you apply to? I'm not sure if that ambiguous message from them implies you are on a waitlist, but if so, I just declined an offer from the Bio Sci department today. There are plenty of international students in the biological sciences PhD program, so not being a US citizen shouldn't hinder your chances.
  11. Is the cost of living less at the smaller school? That could explain the difference in assistantship amount.
