  1. So, did anyone actually get a rejection notification from UCSD?
  2. Yeah, I agree..it kinda makes me nervous. I visited Riverside for Chemical engineering last weekend and we knew all the details. The visit for chem engineering at Irvine is crazy nice actually..I know this from I guy I met at Riverside. It's Friday and Saturday, dinner tonight with grad students, they're taking them on a tour to the beach and having a bonfire as well one night. I hope the lack of details and lack of extra care isn't an indication of anything...keeping an open mind...
  3. I called Irvine Chem and they said they do not provide money back for the food the night before or the day after the visit. Any food you pay for is on you. They cover lunch and dinner the day of the visit...make sure to eat breakfast at the hotel I guess. Bummer.
  4. Does anybody know if food is covered by the graduate school as well? Irvine hasn't mentioned any dinner plans for the night before the visit...anybody going to Irvine in the next few weeks know about this? They took us out to dinner on the last visit I had and then there was a bbq at the deans house the night of the visit. Breakfast was covered at the hotel...Irvine doesn't mention any of this but we do pick up a packet when we check in. Also, people going to Irvine this weekend, whats your interest and where will you be traveling from? Might as well 'meet' now I'm coming from San Diego on the train and my interests are analytical/inorganic..would like to get into materials research.
  5. I know this is late...but I guess if people read this for next year, I was admitted to UCI without the Chem GRE and it's required. I just have to take it later..probably April. But I still received a full stipend and fellowship.
  6. I chose the hotel as well. I decided to take the train up, figure that beats driving and it's only $37 roundtrip..which they reimburse anyway.
  7. Me neither...whoever I spoke to said that was the case, but I guess not...maybe they're just waiting for people to accept/reject offers...
  8. I'll be there. I'm just coming from San diego. Since I'm so close, I was hesitant about staying up there cause we have to share rooms..but you mentioned it was worth it..soooo, I'm taking your advice. At least you'll be there to suffer with me if it's not! Haha, j/k. Are you staying at the hotel or with a grad student?
  9. Anybody visiting UC Irvine March 2nd?
  10. Visiting question: If a visit is scheduled for a Friday and everyone departs on Saturday, do the current grad students or prospective or both ever go out on that Friday night?..Or that Thursday for that matter..just figured people wouldn't really know each other before the scheduled stuff. I'm just deciding if I should stay one or two nights since I live within driving distance (two hours). If people hang out, grab a beer, etc, I might stay to get a better (informal) feel for the environment Anybody have info on this?
  11. It's the chemistry department in general. The whole department did not have many spots and analytical even less. I've seen plenty of organic and inorganic acceptances go out, but no analytical..that's why us analytical people were hanging on. So, some may still hear good news but I'm guessing most will not. Oh well, I'm looking on the bright side, I'll probably end up going to the lower rated school over the higher rated I've already gotten into anyway!
  12. The guy I spoke with said that after the visit this weekend they may accept more people. He looked thru a stack and said I was kind of a 'finalist'...which he said was pretty much wait listed/just getting an idea this weekend...so you can interpret it however...oh, well, I'll take it for now. I kind of wish these schools would say something like, 'not taking applications for the following depts' or 'limited spots for following dept' instead of letting us spend all this money.
  13. UCSD update! So, I called and it turns out that it looks like they've made all the decisions so far...so, if you haven't heard, you're kind of waitlisted. Final decisions will be made next week. Analytical accepted a very small amount. Apparently UCSD had a large amount of students accept the offers last year so this year wasn't as big. So, if you haven't heard, good luck to everyone!
  14. No, I went online to my application and the deadline on the bottom now says 02/06/2012..I dunno whats going on. So, I'm going to wait a little longer..I feel like I'll jinx myself if I call.
  15. Has anybody tried calling UCSD? If not, maybe I'll try. Still no results other than organic and inorganic right? C'mon analytical!
  16. Beginning of January I think..maybe end of December..wasn't too early. I received a packet in the mail a couple weeks ago.
  17. I'm sorry if this sounds rude but please start a new thread if you would like to debate the fairness of the Harvard system. I come here for updates on acceptance/rejected decisions and information on schools for the 2012 school year. This is not constructive for the people here.
  18. I think it's just kind of a bonus...so far both UCI and UCR offered a little extra for the first year. Maybe it's to unofficially help with the moving costs or something.
  19. Teaching assistant for 3 quarters first year and 1 quarter second year. $26,000 after payment of fees and before taxes. $1200 plus an additional $300 provided in Fall quarter, 2012 after you begin your studies and upon completion of mandatory orientation activities. It doesn't say if health insurance is included but looking at UCI student fees page http://www.reg.uci.edu/fees/2011-2012/graduate.html you may be able to assume it does...but I'm not sure.
  20. I put analytical/atmospheric as primary and inorganic as secondary. I also listed physical chemistry in my SOP. It doesn't look like analytical/atmospheric has made any decisions yet, so it still looks promising for us!
  21. Has anyone heard from UCSD in a discipline other than Inorganic and Organic?
