  1. Sorry for the tardy reply- I haven't checked this forum in a really long time- but, yes! I loved the department!
  2. Congrats Eidda!
  3. No way to tell... and no respite for us...
  4. Seriously! The investment in applications in no joke! I'm an Andrei Bely fan, as you might have guessed.
  5. hey maceochi, to answer your question from a while back, people generally apply to several programs because the factors determining why a program chooses one qualified applicant over another in a given year can be pretty unpredictable from the prospective student's stand point. But, of course, it only takes one acceptance!
  6. Good luck, you guys! Karen-- congrats! I hope your wait list converts... My application season has extended into march too...
  7. Good luck cml!!!
  8. Yes, congrats to the Yale admit! I'm a bit confused because I was invited to visit campus after my Skype interview- and I'm set up to go next week- but I haven't heard anything about admission/rejection from them yet....Have I been uninvited? I definitely don't want to waste a day off visiting a school that plans on rejecting me. What gives Yale?...I sense some really awkward e-mails coming up.
  9. Sorry to hear that Eidda.
  10. First acceptance! So happy and relieved!
  11. Yeah, I'm starting to get anxious again too...
  12. Congrats renwod and good luck! I actually just had my first interview so I can confirm- we mostly spoke in English but we did switch to Russian for a bit.
  13. My understanding (from the experience of some of my friends, since I've yet to have my first interview) is that they are primarily conducted in English, although you might also be asked to meet with one of the language instructors to assess your fluency level. Does this mean you have an interview renwod? I hope so!
  14. Two more interviews! This feels surreal...
  15. That's great Eidda! I was also asked to apply for FLAS....do you know anything about the essay? I'm a bit unsure of what exactly is expected.
  16. Who wants to claim the Illinois acceptance posted yesterday? Congrats to them!
  17. Congrats on Indiana Eidda and Mambeu! That's great news! I also have good news- I got an invite to the interview weekend at Berkeley over the weekend! I couldn't be happier!!! Good luck to everyone- hope the good new keeps coming on this thread!
  18. Congrats mambeu! I can't believe you've heard back so early!

    New York, NY

True, like I said, I don't know Queens that well, and it seems like rental prices have gone up dramatically everywhere in NYC in the last two or so years... That's a great point languages-etc. That's been my experience too.

    New York, NY

It's all relative Hanyuye. I wrote from my experience based on places I've lived. My grocery bill in NYC is half that of what it was when I lived in PA. I'm no expert on Queens but I have several friends living in Astoria for much cheaper than your quoted prices. Of course NYC is expensive, though, no one is denying that.
  21. Good luck finishing up, you guys! I'm off to the banya to revel in all this new found free time!
  22. I feel the same way. I'm nervous but not anywhere near approaching last year's anxiety levels. I don't know how long the calm will last, but I hope it will get me through Jan at least.
  23. It is done! All my applications are in! And now I wait...
  24. Rejection isn't fun, but like everyone's been saying its not anywhere near the end of world, especially if this is your first year applying. After I got over my initial depression last year I started to think of my situation like this: my application was pretty good and I made it on the wait-list at a good program. If the wait-list had converted I would have gone to that program, but it didn't convert. NOW, I've had almost a whole year to improve my application. I think I have a good shot of getting into two or three programs and if that happens I'll get a choice of where I want to go, which wouldn't have been the case if my wait-list had converted last year. So I've had to wait a year, but I might ultimately have more say in where I spend the next seven years of my life.
  25. Doesn't hurt to try. I had a similar problem last year with my SoP and they let me submit a revised version. I caught the mistake before the final application due date, though, so if you're past the due date that might be a quite different situation...
