  1. My native is Mandarin Chinese, but I have worked on Hong Kong Cantonese for some time now. I would like to look at more varieties of Cantonese and Min/Taiwanese in the future. I plan to work on some minority languages in Southwestern China (fieldwork!) that are related to Thai and Vietnamese, which I also have tremendous interests in. Other than that, I know a little HKSL, and would like to look into sign languages to enrich my understanding of languages. Besides, as a research assistant, I am working on some new varieties of English, and also a little bit with Korean and Spanish.
  2. When they sent you a rejection mail (by paper) and stated the faculty encourage you to reapply ('believes you are competitive'), giving a link for the information about reapplication. Do you guys think they really want you to do so, or it's just being polite? But I think probably I am being stupid. They are just being polite = =
  3. Like about two weeks ago my friend received a mail from her POI in Chicago saying they couldn't accept her this year. So probably they had the results for quite some time already. Not sure why no news so far.
  4. Finally saw some light after several rejections (I know for a fact that NYU'S rejection is on the way, my friend there said they only accepted one P-side person this year). Just got a mail by the director also my POI from Rice saying I was currently waiting-listed, but they "were authorized to accept only four people this year initially". I don't know what that 'initially' means, and I am not even sure how to reply the letter. Looks like the chance is still slim and I don't want to put my hope too high. But it's good to get some recognition after all The weekend is coming :/ Have a relaxed one and hope to hear more good news from you guys next week!
  5. I don't have any good new yet and I expect (and calmly accept) this year might be a flop...but anyway, for those who did apply to schools outside US, I've got an email reply from UBC saying they would not have results until mid March (much later than last year). It seems that the application pool in the US this year is incredibly competitive with lots of promising linguists (Yah for the field and Woe for me), I hope I would have better luck in the neighbor country! And congrats to all those with good news!
  6. Congrats! So happy for you. This probably means OSU gave me a no. Hope there would be good news in the corner for me too
  7. Haha which field do you apply to? And congrats!!!
  8. Looks like Cornell is releasing their good news...Congrats to whoever that is!
  9. No, I just accidentally click the down arrow in the post...sorry = = My previous work in speech perception focused on the cross-linguistic perception of prosodic features. But given a chance in a PhD program, I would like to look at the elastic role listeners are playing in speech variation and change. Yes, I applied to universities in the US (Stanford, OSU, NYU etc.) and also UBC. Judging from the results so far, I think I might have been rejected by several schools already :/
  10. OK, so I 'minus' myself on my first post :-\
  11. Hi, everybody! Just to join you in this darkest hour! I am currently doing Master in HK. My fields of interest are sociophonetics, speech prosody and speech perception. I haven't heard any news yet and best of luck to everybody!
