  1. If there is already an on-site interview, normally they won't give extra offers but will put people on a waiting list instead. At least that's what happened to the two open house with interviews I went to. And in both cases, the admission rates after the open houses were something like 1 in 3.
  2. Hi, Matthew, If you would like to join a program where you can work on Chinese linguistics, and if you really want to go to Asia (I think you can do just fine in the US), I would highly recommend a program in Hong Kong (CUHK, CityU, PolyU, maybe HKU, depending on your interests and approach) over any program in China. Unless you want to work on Chinese historical phonology (which has a totally different approach from modern linguistics) or psycholinguistics of Chinese (in psychology departments), I don't think there are good places in mainland China to do linguistics, especially if you want to prepare for a PhD in the future. Furthermore, MPhil in Hong Kong is fully funded by the government, and applicants outside of Asia are highly welcomed. Taiwan and Singapore, on the other hand, should be great places to learn Chinese linguistics too.
  3. I think the problem for you is not only whether you could find someone to work with, but also the admission committee might worry if you could finish a PhD on a unprecedented topic and more importantly, find a job afterwards. You need to work very hard in your SOP to convince them...
  4. I think you seem to be a good fit to Stanford....I was not sure if I should apply to Stanford the second time, but everyone suggested me have a try anyway, and I did (with no hope to get in), and I got an offer....you never know what the admission committee members are thinking and how the competitions are like in this round. Just go for the programs that match your interests the most and don't leave any regret behind.
  5. There was a school who sent me a rejection in another applicant's name then one more rejection letter in my name.
  6. Flying to America tomorrow for the open houses! Will be a crazy trip! Wish me luck! And good luck to everyone!
  7. Wow, congratulations! No wonder you think it's a dream coming true! Even if other programs send in good news, it's a no-brainer isn't it?
  8. Does the job market of your choice after PhD (that lasts 5 years) really correlate with the department ranking? I would be surprise if it does.
  9. TAL= tonal aspect of language Will be held as a satellite event in Netherlands this year. Congratulations to all with good news! More importantly, good luck to those who are yet to receive them!
  10. Will do! Are you going to Speech Prosody or TAL this May?
  11. I saw from the results board that UCLA and UMass were sending out news! I haven't applied to either of them. But good luck to everyone here!
  12. I am knocking on woods for you! (I hope I didn't misuse the phrase...if I did, so sorry!)
  13. Me too! So happy! Hopefully we'll meet twice next month!
  14. I am sure many people applied to UPenn, just they happened to be absent here (Or when UPenn begins to send out results, some future PennPhDs will show up!)
  15. Today is the last day of the Snake year in China. Happy Chinese New Year to all of you! Wish you a successful Horse Year!
  16. Basically phonetics, sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics. I am pretty nervous about the open house, I've never done anything like that. And I will have 12 hours of jet lag...
  17. My interviewers were concerned about my experience in the theoretical side. They said some phonetics students had problems taking these courses in the past. But I am pretty interested in the works of the two interviewers I talked to. I even got some new ideas after talking to them. Are you going to Stanford in March too? I guess we'll meet there!
  18. Hi, longforit! I am so sorry I haven't recognized you! Give me some tips through the message! Yeah, we should make a list of future collaborators!
  19. Hi, all! Officially joining this conversation. LinguisticMystic, I did an interview with McGill too and my interests also lie in phonetics, psycholinguistics and variation. Good luck to you! Leesies, I am also going to the open house at Michigan. What's your field? I am very fortunate to have some interview/openhouse opportunities (along with two rejections), but still so nervous until the final results come out. Hopefully March is over soon, and everyone here gets to go to where they aimed for!
  20. Nope, I think Rice is done with me :/
  21. Was that someone put off from the waitlist of Rice already? Congrats to whoever that was!
  22. Yes. I replied my POI when she told me I was on the waiting list, but I received no further replies = = Who's your POI if you don't mind? Or we can just PM Best of luck anyway!
  23. With only four quota on the line, I don't expect too much from Rice. With the competition this year, I don't think many ppl will give up their spots either. But I do hope the final results could come out soon.
