50% of people pass quals the first time and 70% pass The second time. Although Ive heard last year the percentage was higher. My acceptance letter said I had no funding and I was invited to visit day with no reimbursement. The funding came later when I was invited to grad diversity day. Look, Stanford is for adventurous people that are willing to take risks. They will never offer guaranteed funding for 5 years like other schools do. You have to take the risk off going through the masters program and showing to the university that you are PhD material. If you feel like stanford isn't good enough for you because it may have a slightly higher acceptance rate than other schools, then go somewhere else. All I can say is that is that I had 5 years of funding at 2 other top 5 schools and decided to go to stanford instead and I do not regret it. This morning I was having a conversation with the CEO of a company in the aero industry about an idea that i have for a startup. I can say that this was only possible because of the powerful network that you become a part of once you join the stanford community.

I'm a first year MS student in the department right now. There's a limited amount of fellowships for MS but there are some. I was fortunate enough to get one as a course assistant for 5 quarters. It was awarded to me by the school of engineering, not aero/astro. If you don't get a fellowship, you could always do what one of my classmates did. Pay for the first quarter and become a CA starting winter quarter, but it's going to be quarter by quarter thing. As for getting to PhD, it's not impossible, you just have to demonstrate your interest in a research area and take the courses that your PI teaches so that he/she gets to know you. I'm doing that now and I already talk to this professor weekly and go to lab meetings as well. However, I don't know of anybody that has gotten an RAship as an MS student. You get that once you pass quals. If you want to work on space related stuff, this is the place to be. We're surrounded by space startups and we often host people that are very important in the space community. Just so you get an idea, these are some things that are happening in the next two weeks: http://stanford.edu/group/policyforum/cgi-bin/drupal/ http://events.stanford.edu/events/336/33669/ At Stanford we work on very fundamental research (TRL < 4). If you want to be a pioneer in your field and get published in a prestigious journal, you come to Stanford. If you're more of a hardware/testing person or are just looking to do something that a lot of other people are doing (which is fine), you might be better off going somewhere else. Good luck making your decision.

I wouldn't have gone. I'm not independently wealthy plus I already have $80K in loans from my B.S.

Idk, I have a similar offer for University of Michigan and I am going to a school visitation at Stanford next week. Its going to be a tough one. I will chose the one that fits me best. Here's an article on what schools employers consider to be the best: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703376504575491704156387646.html

Yeah I got funding. I actually got into the lab that I was interested in working at which is ASDL (Aerospace Systems Design Lab). The offer was for a $26K stipend plus tuition, healthcare and all that other stuff. I'm not sure if there's still positions open. If they told that your are still being considered for funding then there's probably still some positions.

THANK GOD! I'm not being so naive after all. I mean that's good. It means we have good chances 'cause if not we would've been reject or wait listed by now.

How can you hope for a rejection! I'm still hopeful that I will get admitted. Maybe I'm just being naive but its the only way for me to stay sane throughout the day.

Caltech? I applied for the GEM fellowship and on their website they show the status of each of your school applications. They get updated by the schools directly. The caltech one just switched today from applied to denied admission. I still havent received anything official from the school.

Just found out I didn't get into Caltech. It'll be a rough week if I don't get into MIT.

Nothing yet. I was like jumping everything time my phone vibrated indicating that I got a message. But none of them were from MIT! I think at least we can be sure that we'll know by Thursday. At least that's what the confirmation email said. Good Luck to you guys. .

Still waiting as well. I'm sure they're not done notifying everyone yet. I would be worried if I haven't heard anything by March 1st.

Lol, maybe in EE they're rich. The aero visit day was on Friday (Feb 17th) and I was not offered any financial support. I ended up not going because Stanford is pretty far from Indiana and it would've been pretty expensive.
-
Hey did any of the people that got into Stanford go to the visit day today?

I feel like letters of recommendation are extremely important and MAYBE your references are not very recognized in their field. For example, most of my references are world leaders in the fields of aircraft and spacecraft propulsion and they know people at most if not all universities that I applied to. Coming from embry-ridle (which is mainly an undergraduate institution), it will be hard to get those types of references. A lot of the people that apply to the schools that you mentioned have excellent GPAs, GREs, and research experience. It is your SoP and letters of recommendation which are going to set you apart.

Questions about Aerospace Engineering Master programs
puertorrob replied to ykJohn's topic in Waiting it Out
Oh I see. Well you shouldn't feel too bad. That lab that you're talking about is very small so they probably don't take as many people. If your GPA is below a 3.5 it will be tough. But if you have good GREs and excellent letters of rec you might still be able to get into u of m. I worked there last summer as an undergraduate researcher and they always stressed that the letters of recommendation were the most important part of the application. Best of Luck!- 3 replies

Questions about Aerospace Engineering Master programs
puertorrob replied to ykJohn's topic in Waiting it Out
I feel like Georgia Tech and Michigan are more or less at the same level. I got a call from a prof at Georgia Tech on Sunday to tell me that I got accepted and he told me that 550 people applied and 150 or so got in. He also told me that 40 of the people that applied had 4.0 GPAs but not all those 40 got in. So it might have been that your GPA was kind of low. Do you have any research experience? Were your GRE scores good?- 3 replies
