  1. Talked with a Berkeley professor today and he said they had offered admission to 22 students (despite the applicant pool of well over 400). Not sure all these "have gone out" in case it was assigned to several faculty to handle, and some are simply slower than others. But I can say they at least have their top 22 picked out.
  2. Also got an acceptance from UW today! Again through a "congratulations" email, though based off some of the other schools i wouldn't be surprised to receive a call from an interested professor sometime soon
  3. I'm definitely in this sort of situation, though reversed around it seems from the majority of you. I'm in a new relationship and am trying to decide whether to continue putting work in to develop, despite the fact it might have a sort of "expiration date" for when I leave for grad school. It's only been a two month relationship but pretty quickly jumping into serious because we've known and liked each other for years. And everything is basically going as well as I'd hope for... But you cant exactly ask a boyfriend of two months whether he would consider moving to california with you as its best for your career And man i dont do long distance shit. Maybe I'd try for like 2 weeks (and then fail). But it's not really my boys preference either. So it's like.... do i end it now - before we get more involved and so more hurt? Or do i play it out and enjoy all i can from this relationship until the other summer and just deal with parting our ways when that time arises. ugghhh sorry for this downer post but you reach a wine-fueled point where you realize this might indeed be the best place to get relationship advice
  4. Congrats!! Great school How did you hear?
  5. Man I think I'm glad I didn't start paying attention to this site until AFTER I'd submitted my applications because my now somewhat obsessive quest for new information would probably only be worse... Of course there also seems to be a lot of good advice on here I could have taken into account, or, you know, at least stressed out about more. Keep up the posting though guys! I like the general positivity and the comfort of hearing from others in similar positions. Esp since everyone in my life seems to find my plans for the future as rather peculiar and quaint. My list: Harvard Princeton Yale Duke Ann Arbor Berkeley Austin Stanford UW Seattle I'm interested in stratification, race, politics, social mvmts... All def good school but I'd say I'm well qualified and went with the idea of casting a wide net and being happy if I got into any one school. And to not apply to anywhere I wouldn't be ecstatic to attend. Also funding packages will probably be the biggest deciding factor if i get into more than one school..
  6. Hi guys. So I deleted my previous post after deciding it was a little too personally identifying haha. But here's a short version for any newcomers to the thread: Got into Berkeley Sociology PhD on Jan 31, heard via an email fro Heather Haveman. Financial packages will be sent out "in a couple weeks." Personal stats: was poli sci and communication studies major, with an interdisciplinary minor. Completed multiple undergraduate teaching and research assistanships. Total GRE: 1450. GPA: 3.95 on 4.0 scale. Very good LOR, probably less stellar personal statements... Research interests: social movements, rhetoric, racial and ethnic politics, social stratification, politics of abortion. Also applied to: washington-seattle, texas, duke, michigan-ann arbor, stanford, harvard, princeton, yale Rejected from Texas. GOOD LUCK ALL!
  7. Haha well I got to know the Pres in question before she was in fact a President, while she was working in administration and teaching one class a semester. And then my last year of university she accepted a job offer as Pres of a different school but I kept in contact and two years later I requested a letter... Go to a small school?
  8. 3.95 on a 4.0 scale
  9. Accepted to Berkeley Sociology PhD this morning. Financial aid package to come in a couple weeks. Interestingly was rejected from UT Austin last week... just goes to show how variable this process can be. I'm happy to answer any questions people have..
