Thanks so much to you both for your considered responses - really helpful. I am about to attack the library catalogue with requests... I'm a European wanting to base research in the Midwest, so trying to get a sense of things having graduated almost five years ago now. I'll let you know how I get on with them!

Hi everyone, Gearing up for the new application season - fun times! Could anyone recommend an ethnography (or five) based in the US from the past 5 years or so? Any topic welcome! Thanks

That's a very casual "Anyway" considering it will be quite a blow to many people reading! Anyway, thanks for the info.

I've been awol for a little while - looks like it's all heating up! Saw that there has been an NYU interview - does anyone know whether interviews are for all subfields, or just bio/arch? I am social/cultural and vaguely had the impression that they don't interview at NYU for that. If anyone knows/has an opinion either way, I would appreciate hearing it!

Yeah, it's a hard one. I did a very specific Masters, which I then went on to use professionally. Having known I wanted to do a PhD, I would have found it hard to justify a more general anthropology one, as the coursework is included as part of the PhD program anyway. It would definitely be really helpful if schools posted a few sample profiles of admitted students as a matter of course. Perhaps in years to come we can make such suggestions!

I think it's always worth applying! Perhaps the best thing to do would be to get in touch with the faculty at different schools you're interested in, and address this to them directly. But, having said that, from my understanding of archaeology, it is really important to have some field experience when applying to a PhD program. As you're relatively new to the discipline, it would also probably be in your best interests to get some research experience just to check that it meets/surpasses your expectations. I am sociocultural, for which I could think of a range of ways to get useful experience (language training, peace/americorps, community work etc.) that could be accessible for you. Perhaps some archaeologists could chime in with some suggestions - but from my understanding it would be worthwhile, even necessary, to delay applying so that you can get that experience. All the best.

Ah - apologies! I suppose that as with most things, it depends on so many factors that it's impossible to generalize.

I've seen that NYU interviews people - does anyone know whether this is for social/cultural anthropology as well as bio? Thanks!

Looking at the results page, Harvard don't interview, and their results are mailed out towards the end of February/early March.

I've seen a lot of people seem to encourage students to take a gap between their undergraduate degree and grad school, but at the same time it seems that many people go straight through without a problem! Thought it would be interesting to see what range we have here. I have been reading this forum since the beginning of the app process, and decided it was time to get stuck in. I graduated a few years ago, and have been out in the world of work since then - with varying degrees of success! I tried to tie in my experiences with how it would be useful for grad school, but I think the main thing is just that I have a clearer idea of what I want to do with my life in general now. Do you think taking a break is important? Unnecessary? Overrated?! Would be great to hear your thoughts/experiences on the issue.

Hi everyone, I've also applied for this year. This must be the most anxious time for everyone - it's hard knowing that such a big change could (or couldn't) happen, with very little control over it. I haven't heard anything yet, but am hoping that it's still quite early in the process for many programs. Good luck all!
