You might consider applying to a masters program in the UK as well. It appealed to me because the program I am in is only one year. This allowed me to really focus my research interests to put forth a more specific proposal for future research (as anthropologie mentioned). I agree with panda bear and anthropologie about contacting faculty members. I would add that contacting current graduate students with similar interests is also an incredible idea. It can be intimidating, but they will tell you all of the internal politics of the department, give you insight into who you might be best suited to work with, etc. I was also able to mention things that current students told me about the department in my interviews, which really makes it look like you have a thorough understanding of how things work there etc. (which you will!). Best of luck!

no, i haven't heard anything else from them... thanks for being supremely opaque uci! i assume someone who was rejected wouldn't receive this, but then again, why not just send it in conjunction with a decision!? thanks for the positive thoughts though pears -

Hey nritya! welcome though im applying as an american, many people assumed i am an international student. the main difference seems to be permitting skype interviews rather than flying intl students out for interviews in person. also, it is potentially more competitive for intl students to be accepted at public schools because of limited funding. for example, i was told by one school: "...there are several external and intramural fellowships for which you would not qualify as a foreigner. Because of how expensive it is for the department to support foreign doctoral students who come with no funding, we can only accept one or two per year, which makes the admissions process all the more competitive for applicants from abroad." hope this is helpful, though I'm sure actual international students can provide more insight than this! -

check out the "results search" tab... -
what would anyone make of an interview with someone who i did not express interest in working with? could it be they want an objective outsider to assess my application, or that they thought i would be best paired with this prof? any ideas would be appreciated! hope everyone is still staying sane!

My Stanford app is also incomplete despite the fact that all my items show as being received! Tried to contact the dept but I got no response... it makes me feel like they are only just starting to look at apps and pull things together... -

I also haven't heard anything back from Brown, but my status is "complete"... it might be worth emailing the department to ask about it! -

I'm with you on the obsessive email checking haha... although I will say last year I had been rejected from a few programs and they didn't bother to email me for 3+ weeks after my status had already changed on the online app. -

AH. No I am sociocultural. That might explain it... will it show via the applyweb system when there is a decision? Thank you! -

this is an incredibly stupid question (perhaps a sign i wasn't accepted? haha) but can someone explain how to check your app status for brown? I've logged into the applyweb thing but can't find any info on the status... what am i missing that is staring me in the face? -

I feel your pain! My undergraduate advisor (who was one of my letter writers) was in the field for the last six months without internet access. Needless to say the process of obtaining permission for alternative methods of submission was not fun. I've just come to the sad realization that I check this website almost as obsessively as I check my email, as if somehow grad cafe is going to reveal my fate. Is anyone else ready to be DONE waiting!? -

ah brilliant! thanks -
Stanford interviews (according to a current graduate student there). Northwestern has an "interview weekend" (according to the results page for 2012). Duke obvi interviews. Emory interviews (my friend missed the interview round last year). WashU in STL interviews (same friend got an interview last year). I was told by someone on grad cafe via PM that Yale does actually interview (but I think people sometimes blur the boundaries between being asked to Skype and chat about their application and there being a formal interview component)... my impression was that there was a sort of "interview round" though. He described it as being fairly brutal and basically just said they spent the time picking apart weak points in his proposal. Lovely. haha

It seems like you may have to actually contact the department itself to check your status (judging by the sidebar on this site http://studentaffairs.stanford.edu/gradadmissions)... i tried to log in to my application on CollegeNET to check and it said something like "you can only submit one application per year" or something and denied access... I could be wrong though because the department site says this "For application completion status information, graduate applicants may check the application checklist (CollegeNET). The checklist will be updated by staff beginning on 12 December 2012 through January 2013 as materials are received." -

to the duke interview poster- If you are wiling to share, any sense of whether it was a group email or just sent to you specifically? Thank you! -
It says on their website "Please submit a 2-3 page, single-spaced paper..." You're fine.

i think one of the main factors that slows people down is how extensive their teaching responsibilities are... just another thing to consider!
