I submitted my results, yep. Second thing I did after I kissed my girlfriend and danced around with her.

Just admitted to the University of Connecticut. My first acceptance. Funding is still mysterious. I'm really pleased, although I'm still planning to see how W&M and Indiana turn out.

I would have found out sooner, but my mail client thought that UConn's email was junk mail. I didn't check it until I saw someone else posted on the results board.

hey guys! I got an email, probably the same as email as the other waitlistee, and it said I could call him (Seth Koven), so I did! basically, they said it's not a waitlist per se, but they do their admissions in waves. if the jewish historian or middle east historian that got admitted in wave A drops out, i will get the spot. it's not a ranked list, it's based on subfield etc etc etc... he was very kind about it.

nothing is definite yet, but i'm so glad i have something to hold on to. this really is good news overall.

I was wait listed too. I am so happy. Tears of joy for a wait list! Rutgers is my first choice!

    Hi all!

I also got into Penn today!!! I was interviewed on Feb 13 and received an email from the grad coordinator today. I am over the moon--it's my top choice and I was wait listed there last year. Like CPeterson's experience (congrats on Harvard!), reapplying to schools that wait listed you can pay off! I am do incredibly lucky to have this much support from family and advisers. I can't believe what a difference a year makes--last year I only had a wait list, and this year I have 2 offers!

To AFB and the rest of you still hoping for news--DO NOT GIVE UP. Whether this year or the next, passion and devotion wins out. TMP, CPeterson, and a lot of others prove this.

I so hope the rest of you waiting hear good news...and soon!

Yes, don't jump to conclusions! I know someone who was admitted to UVA on Feb 1. Yep, Feb 1. And then another great friend of mine heard back today. Clearly, it's more of a rolling system.

It's the weekend--enjoy the family, take some deep breaths, and know it will work out. This cycle or the next it will work out.

ticklemepink, it sure seems like you do a lot of extrapolating based on your own experiences. wikichic is right that it varies. you may have a good chance. from what i understand, brandeis doesn't have many slots available, so that seems like may lend itself to a viable waitlist, since only need a few accepted students to turn it down to get under desired yield. can't play the law of averages with admits alone like a larger program can.

I'm sorry you guys that you've just gotten rejections. I was there last year and it hurt beyond belief. With that said, there's still time this round. If the worst happens, and I hope it doesn't, the year will go faster than expected because you know exactly what you want. Reapplying sucks (the amount of time to call profs, write statements, etc) BUT think of it this way: you have so much ready. I already had a great writing sample, my GRE scores, and my letters of rec all done (my letter writers updated their letters, which was awesome). Yes, a new personal statement needs to be written and new profs/old profs need to be contacted, but it's so much calmer the second time around because you know the game.

For what it's worth, my application credentials barely changed the second year I applied. What changed is that I got a job in the "real world" outside of academia, and had extra time to think about what grad school really means to me and what I really want to study. As a result, my application was more mature this year without having any extra bells and whistles.

Again, this can still all be a very moot point. It only takes one.

EV being Escondido Village, where grad students live. Thanks for the input, Schlesinger1 . Since it's such a biking school, living on-campus is pretty cool.

CONGRATS TO THE STANFORD ADMIT! Stanford may or may not be my alma mater. I may or not be so madly in love with the school that I will talk to anyone admitted and convince them to go there over all other offers. Seriously, best place in the entire world. I know almost all of the Americanists well, so feel free to ask questions.

PMs welcome . Rejecting a Stanford offer is NOT welcome .

    WOW!!! Congrats!

Yeah, I recently moved and when I went to change my address on my OSU account, I realized that I put down the wrong state. Oh goodness gracious, I e-mailed the graduate assistant right away to tell him.... I think they still haven't sent out stuff yet, at least. I just wanted to make sure that my acceptance packet didn't get sent back to OSU!

I'm still so stoked... And it's been barely 48 hours since that last piece of news from UW...

Be warned, top PhD programs are the bane of many relationships and marriages. Being a graduate student at a top program does not make you a great scholar, most are not and never will be. I am frustrated by the cheeriness of this forum, the last thing our field needs is more overly positive modern nonsense. Those who indulge in or need human attachment are weak, they lack the resolve to suffer and destroy themselves for the sake of their art. That's why the average time for PhD completion is 7yrs these days when it should be 4-5.

Yes...and this is what I, for one, want. For some, the fun is in the work/research/writing. I'm taking this with the levity it is intended, but I'm also just clarifying that many applicants do know exactly what we are getting ourselves into and the rejections are still painful even though they might be doing us a favor...

I will get into a doctoral program, whether it is this time around or another time. It is my dream and it will be what I accomplish, job market be damned. Luckily I have a supportive partner (who has a PhD) who doesn't care about what the house looks like or if we go out a lot or if I make a ton of money. My partner just wants me to pursue my dream and understands what will be in store for me/us if/when I get accepted into a program.

Again, I'm not reacting negatively, just wanted to say "yes! this is what I want!" I might be nuts but...oh well. I have no children and will not be having any. I've got my partner, pets, and history. Life, for me, is great with those elements.

Now I just must wrangle the elusive doctoral program...

    GUYSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

While someone did post an acceptance for OSU on the survey board, I get to call it FIRST ON THIS BOARD!! I saw that when I was leaving work and I was like, oh man, my password for OSU site is so complicated that I need to be on my laptop to see it. So I walked 40 minutes, probably my fastest commute time ever, back home from work... I just had a really good feeling in my tummy and was pleading to my POI to please, please, pleaseeeee accept me.

AND I FREAKING GOT IN!!!! With full-funding!!!! THREE YEARS OF WAITING IS OVER!

Now I know what it's like to cry- of happienss, not sadness.

OH MY GOD! I called up 2 of my LOR writers- one was actually on her way to teach a senior seminar... hahaha.

SO OVER THE MOON! *goes back to more happy dancing*

I know!! Honestly, this week I have been so unproductive at work because I keep thinking about applications! We're discouraged from browsing the internet for non-work related activities, so I can't even get my fix here!

So, my wife walks in from getting the mail and announces loudly "Today's your lucky day!!!"

As I'm picturing her handing me a large and very stuffed manilla envelope marked YALE GSAS, she hands me my free personalized return address labels from St. Jude's Children's Hopsital. Not a bad score in itself- but not what passes for a "lucky mail day" in these frenzied times!!!!
