  1. Angio--sorry for the late response. I checked this book out at my local library. It had a lot of information that you might find helpful. 2. What is your Public Health focus/interest?
  3. Yes, that is what I am asking, and also if the tuition is less than the annual max, if it is a "given" that I will receive that much?
  4. Applied and accepted to a MPH program that I am super excited about. I have filled out the FAFSA, and the college has it on record. I am starting in Spring 2013. I have not yet heard back from the college regarding the amount of money that I am eligible for. I am reading up on the loan limits for grad schools, and it appears that grad students cannot apply for subsidized stafford loans as of July, which sucks, but there are still the unsubsidized and grad plus loans. Not real excited about the gradplus loan route, higher interest, credit history considered, etc. (not that I have a bad rap sheet, but I would prefer to have the stafford loans) The program that I will be attending will be less than the maximum for stafford unsub loans, and I am hoping that I will get the entire two years in those loans. Is this possible? I have other stafford loans unsub and sub, which are in good standing. But simply put, if I don't get the loans, I can't afford the school. Thanks for your input.
  5. Thanks Zero. I actually got accepted to an online program in Health Policy at New York Medical College. Now, I hope that I can get enough loans to pay for it......
  6. Ok, I have applied. Felt good about it, and now after reading what types of folks are applying for MPH degrees, I feel like maybe I look un-qualified. Maybe my SOP won't stand out. So here's the deal: BS in Health Mgmnt (4.0 gpa) A.S. Radiation Oncology Technology (radiation therapist) (3.5 gpa) A.A.S. Medical Assisting/Medical Administration (gpa 3.8) My experience is all clinical, nearly 18 years of it. I am a board certified radiation therapist for ten years. I have not done any theses, volunteer work, or had any articles published. I have created and presented continuing education presentations for radiologic technologists. I am a clinical supervisor for radiation therapy students, and supervise 5 staff therapists. I am a guest/fill-in speaker/educator at the local community college for radiation oncology technology. I see where many applicants have prior masters degrees or have done volunteer work for long periods of time for public service entities. Yet, many others are hoping to go on to med school and are using the MPH as a shoe-in. I can make GREAT money as a therapist, but a recent repetitive strain injury at a young age has left me re-considering quality of life vs. career, and have always had a particular interest in cancer disparity programs. I guess I need encouragement. Can I get a cheerleader??
  7. With the research I did, CEPH accredited schools ranged from 500-900/cr. Most programs were between 40 and 50 credits. The out of state tuition is most usually the same for in state--which is also a bonus! If considering an online program, make sure and inquire HOW much online it is. Emory has an online as does Hopkins, but they require SOME on campus time--meaning if you don't live somewhat local, the program may not be for you. UC Berkeley's online program was 80/20, but the 20 was like 1 day/ qtr, which isn't bad if you can afford the travel/accommodations for that, I suppose.
  8. Hi. I was looking into the UC Berkeley program--the new online 80/20 as I am local. The PH dept and college both have a great reputation, to be sure, the admissions to the program are extremely competitive, and the cost of living in the bay area (local knowledge) is very high. Although I do not know your personal financial situation, I would caution you, that the UC sysytem is constantly raising tuition rates--California is broke! Other areas of study in the state universities are being held up due to funding, and although I do not know this to be true for Berkeley or for the PH programs, I had considered an MHA prior to a MPH in Health Policy, and was disenchanted with that whole scenario. However, Berkeley does hold a very high rank and will definitely open doors. The bay area is a very diverse area and community with mild weather and an appealing off-campus life being just a short drive to San Francisco, Yosemite, and Tahoe, just to name a few. If you can get in, and you can afford it, give it a shot!! The cost was prohibitive for me, so I recently applied to UMass Amherst and New York Medical College's online programs, for Spring 2013. I have a small child and am desirous of being at home with her as long as I can, so this is why I went this route. Good Luck!!
  9. Hi all. I am new to the forum, have been looking through the topics, and since my search turned up nada, I am imploring other posters to help me out here.... First off, I have been in the medical community as a clinician for nearly 18 years. I started my journey long ago, by first obtaining my A.A.S. from a for profit college (accredited through ACICS--national accreditation). I then achieved additional state and board licensing after completing another two year program (A.S.) in radiation therapy--this from a regionally accredited college. After a few years as a staff therapist, I decided to obtain my BS in Health Managment, however, I was working full time and had a small child. Clearly, the flexibility of on line programs attracted me, and I received my BSHM after a two year online program. This was through another nationally accredited college. (ACICS again.) Recent events have me anticipating a career change--I have decided that one in MPH, particularly in Health Policy and Management is where I want to head. My concerns are whether my undergrad credits will be accepted from the ONLINE programs that are accredited through the CEPH. I understand the importance of the accreditation/affiliation, and I am desirous of education therein. However, I do not want to retake courses such as English, Speech, and Algebra, and extend a two year Masters into a 4+ year educational experience. I know there are a plethora of unaccredited MPH programs, and they make me a little nervous. But if "traditional" colleges won't accept my transfers, then what choice do I have? My questions are: 1. Does anyone know if online programs are more accepting of national accreditation than the traditional on- campus educational MPH programs? And if so, which ones? 2. Does anyone have information about a reputable college that is not accredited through the CEPH? I would consider a nonaccredited program--but do not want a worthless Masters degree. 3. If I anticipate working in public policy in the immediate community/state area, how important would the accredited education be to perspective employers? 4. Would it be wise to perhaps look into a MPA program with a Health Care focus? I have knowledge that a regionally accredited program will accept me into this arena. Thanks for your thoughts and honesty....
