Hello everyone, I'm an incoming PhD student to UMass. I've been looking for an apartment and I found "Squire village" and "Boulder apartment" pretty nice. I have a few questions about the apartments and the area so if anyone can answer any one of the questions, I'll appreciate it very very much! 1. I won't have a car probably for the first year. Do you think it'd be doable to commute from the two apartments to the school? 2. Overall, how much should I expect to pay for utilities? 3. This is not for the apartments but is there a place to buy some inexpensive furniture (e.i. a desk, a bed, a table...)? I don't mind using second hand ones . I appreciate any information regarding the two apartments or any other nice place you might want to recommend! Thanks!
  3. This happened to me as well. It's really unbelievable how this happened to quite a few of us.
  4. Oh! Thanks for the recommendations! I've checked the mendeley and it looks awesome! I'm starting my phd program this fall and I think this will definitely be useful!
  5. Mine has been updated as well and it was the bad one!! I know it's weird for me to sound so excited but I'm really content to exactly know what options I am dealing with now!
  6. Me too!! Fingers crossed for everyone waiting!
  7. Congrats emvtgse! I checked my status after i saw your post but still no change on mine.. I really hope they tell me soon one way or the other!! Argh!!!!!
  8. I got impatient and called too lol The person said the result will be out early March as what you were told... so I guess we could hear something (good or bad) from them next week!
  9. Yeah, I'm curious about the Social Foundations acceptance on the result pages as well. More so bc I applied to the exactly same specialization. Please share!
  10. I applied to UC Berkeley as well. I just called yesterday to ask approximately when the result would come out and they said it'd be from next week to the end of March. According to the research of the previous results, they almost always let the good news be out first about mid Feb. and then leave those who got rejected hanging till mid March!! So I'll assume that I don't have a chance if I don't get any news next week... Hope this helped those applied to Berkeley!
  11. Thanks so much, idontlikecoffee!!! I just got the email that the graduate committee recommended me for admission and they need the financial documents! (I don't know if this is required only for international students...) Do you happen to know how to find out about funding? should we just wait? I can't believe I got the admission!!!
  12. I'm waiting as well... According to the results search of previous years, their timeline for the decision making seems quite unpredictable..
  13. OOOOOOOOOO!! my status says "Your application has been academically approved and is now in Financial Review. Items with a status of Incomplete are still needed by the office listed in the Contact column." too!! Does this mean I'm admitted??? Please bear with me... this is my second round of application and my first official news was a rejection so I don't know what an 'acceptance' looks like!!
  14. Oh, thanks! When you said you got a status update, did your status said you were admitted? And, can I ask you when you got the email and was it from your POI or from the department? I'm sorry for bombarding you with so many questions! I haven't heard anything till now... and I'm getting nervous and even depressed a little!!
  15. Oh thanks for sharing the information! Can I ask you when you got the email?
  16. I just saw someone got rejected from the OSU higher education program. According to the post, the result was from the website, which I immediately checked but saw 'in review' still. Is there some other people out there who heard anything from OSU?? FYI, I applied to PhD program at school of teaching and learning.
  17. Hi Ew33! Thanks for wishing me good luck About you questions, My experience may be a bit different with other applicants who had tried multiple years because I made a significant change in the programs I'm applying to. Last year I mostly applied to the programs in Linguistics departments. Since my MA degree is sociolinguistics I thought it'd make more sense to do so. but later I realized my research interests are more social than linguistic. Also, I have a strong background in Education so I decided to apply to the programs in the field of Education this year. I did try to improve my application of course... Score and work experience wise, my GRE score is slightly better and I've done 6 month internship at a UN agency. And I've tried to improve the quality of my SOP. I can definitely say that I'm more confident than last year but last year's all-rejection experience doesn't really boost my morale. I hope this helped anyway! and good luck to you as well
  18. Hello everyone, This is my second round of PhD application and I'm applying to the programs below. SUSE- SHIP-RILE Berkeley LLC U Mass Amherst LLC Penn GSE Education society and culture OSU UMD Minority and Urban Education UVA Social Foundations I hope I won't have to go through this excruciating process again next year! *fingers crossed*
  19. I don't know what exactly your research interests are.. but I was debating between the educational linguistics and Education, culture and society specialization. I decided to go for the latter in the end but I'm guessing your interests are similar to mine... so here are some suggestions.. UC Berkeley - Language, Literacy and Culture U Mass Amherst -Language, Literacy and Culture OSU - Language, education and society Those three seem very much related to educational linguistics so you might want to check them out
