Srunner reacted to ecpurcell in Fulbright 2012-2013
Hi everyone:
I just accepted a job offer with the National Park Service today. It literally was one of the hardest choices of my life. Since I have put so much time and effort into the application and into this forum I feel almost like I am giving up. I wish there was a way to able do both, but I know that's not possible. So, I decided to choose a paying job over the Fulbright. I hope I made the right decision. If anyone has some words of advice, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm fine with it.. however I hate that facebook displays info incorrectly. For instance I still have my current school which I am finishing this semester and yet for the last two years it has said "Studied" at and now it says "Studies" at new university ... even though I put in a future date... Facebook makes me angry sometimes.

My view on the internship thing... I've already had an internship at the State Department and that was while attending school in Georgia... Boston only increases chances. You don't HAVE to be in D.C. or New York to get the internships, it just makes things a lot easier/cheaper. I emailed the Grad School coordinator and he seemed nice via email but who knows in person. I'm remaining cautiously optimistic that I am making the right choice We really do need to start a facebook group!

Nice! Siena's such a great place. I've never actually been to the Chigi - scheduling conflicts and all that - but I look forward to enjoying it some day!
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that the primary drops and BU embraces the opportunity to have one of their students be a Fulbrighter!

Well, about ten minutes after I got that e-mail I sent my official acceptance to Boston University haha, I can't deal with anymore what ifs. The Casten Family grant was a specific (1 award) to complete a Masters of Food Communication (essentially advertising the Slow Food Movement) at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Bra, Italy. I'm happy that I was an alternate and congrats to you as well. It is reassuring to think of the amount of applications for Italy each year and to know we made it this far is pretty special. I'd be a little upset if two months from now I find out the other person turned it down but.. va be va be.
What do you want to research again, I think you told us but I can't remember?

Accepted as an ETA to Poland! I received my email at 8:49am today. I'm pretty surprised that I got it. Everyone I know who has applied for an ETA grant with 1 or more dependents has been rejected. I told my fiance to excpect that I would be turned down; he's as shocked/elated as I am!

Good to know that it is by email first... That will make it a few days quicker: a lifetime in the admissions process!

I found out today that when someone receives a Fulbright at my school they get lawn signs in our school colors that say: Congratulations _(full name)_. Fulbright Scholar to _(country)_. They put them all around campus.
I want signs with my name on them next week!

I find it kind of humorously annoying. A couple of my professors helped me with my application or served on my interview board, and they ask me ALL OF THE TIME whether or not I've heard anything. The conversation usually goes something like this:
-So did you hear from Fulbright yet?
-No, not yet! I don't expect to find out until April.
-Well be sure to let me know when you do!
-I will, I promise!
One week later, we have the same conversation. Do they not believe me when I tell them I'll let them know?

For the Fulbright applicants to Indonesia - I just stumbled upon some information that made me happy and a little bit more confident about getting the award. Apparently, 40 to 50 ETA grants will be awarded instead of 35 (as stated on the main US website for Fulbright). Also, the start/end date for the grant is mentioned: 5 August 2012 to 13 May 2013, which is great to know since I mentioned in my work contract that I would leave early should I get the Fulbright (I was very optimistic!) if the dates overlapped (which they do, I end on 18 Aug...).
Here is the link: http://www.aminef.or.id/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&catid=2&id=54.
I hope we find out soon and again, good luck! :-)
Also, why I am up at 521AM - roosters...

I'm really digging the anxiety in this forum. Seriously. It is normalizing in the most necessary way. I was on spring break last week and by Sunday, I seriously diagnosed myself with a paranoid personality disorder. Then, I remembered why I feel half-crazy: I suck at waiting. Being back in school is helping, but god, this waiting is torture. Like many of you, I'm obsessive about the mail and email and, generally, dreaming up the craziest scenarios (in one, I'm pregnant and I get put on bed rest so I can't leave for Poland--totally insane!). But seriously, not being able to plan for the future past May is painful. Everything hangs in the balance on this Fulbright decision.
So, the jist: I feel your pain and I'm adding to the shares because, well, reading about the rest of your anxiety is helping immensely.
Hang in there! Good luck. And remember: you only FEEL like you're certifiably nuts.
