I really wouldn't recommend relying on the Yolobus. In my experience, they're seldom on time and not the most well-maintained buses in the world(plus, full of the types of crazies you'd expect to encounter in a much larger city). The traffic from West Sac to Davis in the mornings is pretty awful, and the people I know who commute(by car) say it generally takes about 40 minutes to go the 12 or so miles, plus extra time finding parking in the overpriced and overfilled parking lots. The apartment complexes are usually full of undergrads and can get pretty loud on thurs/fri evenings -- daviswiki is good for letting you figure out which complexes are good for avoiding that type of situation though. I lived in apartments for my first two years in Davis -- one was awful (University Square -- poor maintainance, noisy neighbors) and the other was SUPER but you have to get on a waiting list (Davis Townhouse -- super quiet, lowest price in town for a 1br but still pretty steep). I live in a house in East Davis now (moving to north carolina if anyone wants to take my spot!) and I think it's the best option if you don't mind sharing with people. Basically anywhere in Davis is close enough to bike to campus, and if you're not a biker the Unitrans buses are super.
  2. No, I meant Seattle -- and it ended up being a no-go. Accepted another offer instead.
  3. I've been trying to get a sense of where I stand at UW. I've been told I'm on the waiting list for funding, but have no idea how high on the list, and haven't been able to get hold of anyone at the Department who can tell me anything. So - is there anybody here who's been offered a fellowship and plans to decline? Anybody else who's on the waiting list for one?

Most leases in Davis start September 1st, especially for apartments, but you should start looking for places now if you're positive you're going to UCD. I'm finishing up my undergrad at UCD now, if you need any advice.
  5. I applied for the MA. In retrospect I guess I should have at least tried for a PHD first, but my language skills are seriously lacking as it is.
  6. I'm more than likely going to be moving to Seattle in the fall, since my spouse and I both got offered admission there. I used to live in the Seattle area, but I've been in California for the past twelve years so I'm not particularly looking forward to being rained on again. Now, I have family up there but they're stuffy old folks, and I have some friends who recently moved to Seattle but don't know the area too well either, so it's nice to have another city resource? What are the odds of finding a small house with a chicken-friendly yard and a short commute to campus? When's the best time to apartment-hunt? I live in a college town so 90% of all leases end on August 30th...it would be nice to know if Seattle had something like that as well.
  7. Is anyone in this thread (or lurking this thread) considering Comp Lit at UW? I got an acceptance email a while back, a copy of that same email by mail a few weeks later but no sign of the promised "packet of information."
  8. I found out a little while back that I got into the comp lit MA program at the University of Washington. No word about funding, but I was pretty stoked, since my husband found out a few hours later that he was admitted into the PHD program there as well. I thought everything was falling into place nicely until I got an email yesterday morning telling me that I'd been wait-listed for U-Toronto. What are the odds of getting accepted from that waitlist considering that I'm from the wrong CA?
